interesting... ordered by the last letter, with a break between the MUF's:
Code:
13 082101 HUA
1 092102 IUB
3 102103 JUC
5 112104 KUD
11 122105 LUE
7 132106 MUF
9 132106 MUF
8 142107 NUG
10 152108 OUH
6 162109 PUI
4 172110 QUJ
2 182111 RUK
12 192212 SVL
this makes the order of the first letter-column odd... where H starts, and why T-Z is left out

I just went and picked up the book as well - I checked out both copies there - and neither had anything suspicious looking on the pages... damnit..

hey guys,
thanks for delving a bit deeper into this for me. clutching at straws now but i'm in the UK, so maybe they had two different printing runs (i.e. my copy says it's printed and published in great britain)? do you guys all have US copies?
EDIT: sorry about the upside-down lines, sapagoo. it was 1am here when i scanned them in. there were also a couple of pages that i left out because the patterns on them were so thin as to be pretty much non-existent. if you want i can rescan them all in and align them properly?

okay so i learned how to read the barcodes manually. probably could have done this without ripping the pages out, too
heres what i got:
page code
25- 2112322212132132122222213321112331112
56- 2111332311411212132212312112322232112
57- 2112322213122132121212231112242331112
88- 2111332121214213122212312122321232112
89- 2112322312122132121213221411222331112
120- 2111332211124312122212312221321232112
152- 2111332212411212231212312222311232112 thin
153- 2112321221322132121222132412112331112
184- 2111332111431213221212312132221232112
185- 2112321222312132121223121341112331112
216- 2111332112142312221212312231221232112
217- 2112321132222132121322121142122331112
248- 2111332411221222131212312232211232112
281- 2112321232212132122214123121212331112 thin
312- 2111332422111322121212312213122232112 thin
345- 2112322211322231121122323111412331112
blank- 2111332123113221222212312212231232112
all of the even pages need to be mirrored, as they were on the left hand side as you open the book. the "thin" ones are more likely to be wrong, as i could hardly see them. the blank page at the end was on the left too, so that needs to be mirrored.
EDIT: updated with mirrored pages:
EDIT 2: added spaces
EDIT 3: translated and corrected a few things
Code:

EDIT 4: ignored checksum, reordered, and converted to letters:
Code:
08 21 01 = HUA -p376m
09 21 02 = IUB -p25
10 21 03 = JUC -p57
10 21 03 = JUC -p312m (thin)

13 21 06 = MUF -p153
13 21 06 = MUF -p216m

14 21 07 = NUG -p185
15 21 08 = OUH- p152m (thin)
15 21 08 = OUH- p217
16 21 09 = PUI- p120m
17 21 10 = QUJ- p88m
17 21 10 = QUJ- p281 (thin)
18 21 11 = RUK- p56m
19 22 12 = SVL- p345
that rogue "V" at the bottom is right.

I'm in the US and have a copy, but I don't see any cryptic barcode in mine.

Mine indicates a US copy as well. I'm still not sure that you haven't got something though. After reading the book (good little story btw), having put a few codes, on a couple of random books wouldn't be outside the realm of possibility considering the story, or the subject.
Even if there isn't anything there - it was a good read, and worth the $ to find out whether or not there might be another rabbit hole.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I wasn't near a computer at the time, but does anyone recall the website specifically spelled out in the book? It seems like there was just one, where it actually said.. "www._____.com"? Or have I been playing TINAG too long, and seeing something everywhere , where there is nothing to be seen? lol

Just for reference on page 40 Dagmar gives her coordinates to Charlie from the hotel.
They are 6 degrees 11 minutes 31.8 seconds south, 106 degrees 49 minutes 19.48 seconds east.
The closest hotels I found to there are the Grand Hyatt and the Bundaran Hotel. She was supposed to be staying at the Royal Jakarta Hotel but it doesn't exist. Which makes me wonder. Usually an author of these types of books would name a real hotel even if the work is fiction. But maybe this author is naming a hotel that exist in an Alternate Reality.
I think we should pursue this a little further. Maybe re reading the book.

Potential fun-spoiling behind meta-spoiler tag:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
When I interviewed Walter Jon Williams about the book, he claimed that there aren't really cross-media elements to the book although he wanted to insert them. Specifically, when I asked him about transmedia elements, he said:
"I very much wanted this to happen. A game was very seriously discussed, and I went so far as to plot one in considerable detail. But the publisher in the end decided that a more conventional advertising campaign was called for.
I briefly considered launching the game on my own, but I decided I really didn't have the resources or the time.
Maybe if the hardback is wildly successful, there will be some kind of cross-platform marketing for the mass market paperback. We can always hope."
So while there may be an easter egg or two, chances of something more are fairly slim...for now.
