35.247483 -080.805150 failure report

1. Location (time and coordinates): (35.247483 -080.805150) 06:23 PDT Charlotte, NC

2. Incorrect response was given. Should have been "Operator" rather than "Mellisa"

3. Plan to return - Yes. ReverbandWhiskey was also intedning on returning.

4. Any notes for others that might visit the location - there is only on payphone at the location. It works (don't let the looks fool you). It is in the NoDa area on N Davidson between 35th and 36th. It is in the parking lot of an car repair/electrical supply store (hard to tell, not open) across the street from a Fire Dept. The phone is at a bus stop and has a "phone from your car" sign on it.

1. Chicago, Borders Bookstore, Axon 14:08 PDT:
2. Phone did not ring (It rang in our phones we called from cells, but the phone itself did not ring. I picked up the phone 2-3 times during the hot minute, but only dialtone was my prize)
3. I do not, unless it's still cold by like, Saturday or something. Even then, it won't ring!
4. There are two phones right by the bathrooms, to the right of the cafe. We cased the joint, and there are no other payphones. The coordinates point to the door of Borders, but Grout said the GPS pointed to the ATM in the wall right next to the doors. Smile There's really no other payphones in a reasonable distance from there, it seems.

There were payphones on three locations near this GPS.
1. Lower Level, just to left of Administration Office.
2. Lower Level, to right of Security office (near Men's Room)
3. Upper Level, nearest outer windows, around corner from Food Court

The lower level payphones never rang.

About thirty seconds before 1603, someone picked up and occupied the upper phone.

I can't get away from work to try again, but here's a strategy for any brave souls. Block the phones for a good couple of minutes before Axon time. Assign a couple of people to each phone, with cellphone communication between them. Good luck!

[Dsal], can you hit this tomorrow?

I can try to swing by there, but I kinda promised a friend last week that I'd meet him for lunch. Maybe if I stop by there on the way out.

SoFresh - I assumed there wasn't phone right there, since it's the outside edge of a parking lot, but isn't there a Pizza Hut or something like that across from the spot on the map? Or did you check inside the nearest mall entrance? Some people are finding the phones pretty far away.

I'm not surprised about these. I've talked to several friends from NY (upstate and the City) who aren't in the game, and they were surprised at the whole pay phone idea. "Pay phones can't accept incoming calls!" Apparently, many payphones in NY can't accept calls--we might never get these axons to go hot. This might be the case in other locations as well.

Codeword: Hey Soldier
07:19 PDT

GPS coordinate sites have given me an address of 621 Universal Drive. Maps with a point put it in a parking lot of a theater that is listed as 550 Universal Drive. Despite the address oddity, we were convinced that was the correct phone, as it is by itself in the parking lot and there are no other pay phones in the vicinity, not that we could find at least.

It never rang.

It had a dial-tone, though I've no idea if it is able to receive incoming calls. I since checked the GPS coordinates given with the address of the theater itself, and those coordinates match the Bees coordinates until the thousandths place, the third number after the decimal, so I think it is close enough to verify that is indeed the correct phone. Not sure if I'm going back in a couple hours, depends on if I see the axons before me start going hot. Any help? Suggestions?

I found one set of phones a full block away from the GPS location! Because the entire bldg was the same address, I think. So if your phone doesn't ring, be thinking outside the box a bit! If the store and the phone in the lot have the same address it could well be a phone in the store and not the one in the lot!

That was my problem though, and why I was worried. The phone is in the parking lot for a movie theater. However, the address of the movie theater is 550, but the address that GPS sites give me for the Bees coordinates is 621. We looked up the road more and didn't see anything promising, and the sattelite pictures from the websites are clearly that parking lot, and right about where the phone is, so....

Indianapolis

I was at both sites in Indianapolis yesterday Hey solider and dizzy. Both were busts.

Site one Hey soldier 07:27 PDT
39.911569 -086.215736 was located no where near a pay phone. This was verified with a gps. We had some people scatter out to find pay phones, but none of them rang. I am wondering now if there was one just across the street at an office supply store. It is way up on the north side of town and I can't make it, and I think everyone left pretty discouraged yesterday. I am also wondering if the pay phones we staked out rang. That whole location needs a closer look. I have no immediate plans to go back up because there is it would be really tough to get to...

Site two Dizzy 08:23 PDT
40.757145 -073.987240

We had about twenty people there. We were still unclear on how to respond that early in the morning and the guy who answered had a really tough time hearing. I am convinced we supplied the wrong responses, or Melissa was plain unwilling to accept because of all the back ground noise. Lawns were being mowed across the street. Plan on being there today. Lets see

Indianapolis follow up

We need to get back up to 86th and test those phones. I am going to call that Staples today and see if they have a pay phone. That would have been really really close to the coords we had. I can't get to it today, I might be able to try later this week.

Re: [META] Post here to document WHY Axons didn't go hot

First Kissimmee (SW of Orlando) location:
1) 0743 PDT, 28.346950 by -81.630343 (Kissimmee, FL)
2) d. Phone didn't ring (verified working)
3) Not planning to return to this specific one today, might do so in the future.
4) The most likely candidate was the phone at the 7-11. The one other person there and I opted to also cover the phones in the McDonald's next door, but not until it was just about time. It's possible that I got to those phones too late. None of the phones ring loud enough to hear from more than a few feet away. There is a hotel, an RV park and Pizza Hut nearby (but much farther from the coordinates), which likely have phones, but they were not checked due to lack of bodies. No other businesses or locations were open or had outside phones.

Second Kissimmee (SW of Orlando) location:
1) 0843 PDT, 28.336158 by -81.591947 (Kissimmee, FL)
2) d. Phone didn't ring (verified working)
3) Since the minimum was not reached, will try to get to this one. The Ourobouros and a friend are also planning to be there, possibly more.
4) The most likely candidate was the phone at the Studio 1 gift shop, it was only a few feet away from the coordinates. There were about a dozen people altogether at this site, some of which scouted the working-but-physically-damaged (handset split in half, but wires connected) phone at the McDonald's next door. The two phones are not visible to each other, and none of the phones ring loud enough to hear from more than a few inches away. In hindsight, in hearing some people's phones were a distance away, the Denny's next to McDonald's has a bank of two phones outside that are probably close enough. There's a Circle K across a six lane divided highway, which may also be the location. Across the intersecting street is a hotel set back from the road, which likely has a pay phone as well.

Spent two hours away from paid time at work yesterday on this, so not planning on investing too much more on possible duds.
