Berkeley Locations Complete

All Berkeley Axons are now hot. Good job to all of you that participated! You guys rock! My apologies for the off center group photo. It was really cool meeting all of you.

Good thing we had enough people to have all the 1559 Hours phones covered and two relay people.

*Phone rings*
*Guy answers*
*Girl on corner waves to guy down the block in blue shirt*
*Blue shirt guy waves to the rest of us*
*Mad dash to the Berkeley Library*
*Two passerbys begin running with us while shouting "What's going on??"*
*Security guard has "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?" look as we come streaming in*

Awesome day. Thanks for the memories everybody!

Okota, out.

Hmm. For some reason I can't upload so I'll link the photo below.

Chicago - Century Shopping Center, Axon 12:08 PDT, walkaway_girl

I'm sittin' on a bench, and some guy in a bright yellow t shirt walks by, and quietly goes, "Buzzzzz." So he turns out to be Grout, and we both say our nice to meetcha's and I tell him that not only are there phones by the movie theaters on the 4th floor, but also another bank of two phones on the 1st floor, by the Bally's.

I would say it pays to ask the Info Desk on where all the possible payphones are at a location, but in this case it did not help me, as I chose to stick by the Bally's phones, and Grout's phone up on 4 rang, and he single-handedly made the axon connection, as well as a semi-decent recording of the sound file!

I waited at the Bally's phones with two guys who sorta knew of each other from an XBox forum somewhere, and both happened to have the same name. The phone did not ring, but then Grout rang my cell, and we met in the lobby, as I called ARGN's Axon Hotline with the rundown. Excitment, but wishing I had stuck with Grout's (correct) gut instinct, and gone to the 4th floor.

Chicago - Borders Book store, Axon 14:08 PDT, four_goats

Two phones are here, and three players - one of the other forum guys left after all of us minus Grout went to Emerald City for tasty falafel. One phone specifically listed itself as incapable of taking incoming calls. The other phone would ring on our cellphone end, but the phone itself never rang. Despite waiting there for the axon to go hot, and occasionally lifting the receiver during the Magic Minute, we got nothing but dialtone.

Chicago - El Platform @ Wrigley Field/Addison, Axon 14:59 PDT, BEER

There were 3 or 4 phones inside the vestibule area where the CTA gates were to the trains, but all three did not accept incoming calls. Bravely sallying forth, we plunked down CTA fare and rode the escalator up to the platform, where we found one phone, and called it, cynically, to see if it would ring. It did! We giggled and whooped a little, like complete dorks, but it was such a nice thing to hear after the disappointment of the Borders, and the non-functioning phones downstairs. The other forum guy (who might show up here at UF as 01, or something) said he'd take a look for other phones, even though this phone was pretty much on the freaking spot. He comes back and says, yes, there is indeed a phone down at the other end, and yes, it rings. So he offers to go wait by that one, and says he'll call if it rings for him. We do a weird exchange of cell numbers, and I am poised, one hand holding cell phone, thumb over the call button, 01's number selected in the memory, the other lightly resting on the receiver.

Grout's phone rings, and he sees that it's 01. We run to the other end of the platform, and 01 looks all excited, and he's listening so hard, and he looks confused like maybe he goofed up, so I take the receiver and hear a sound file that sounds familiar to the others I'd been hearing all morning, so I grin, and yell, "Repeat!" as trains come roaring in on either side of the platform. We repeat a few more times so we can hear it, and then we whoop a bit more amongst ourselves and grin and then we split off and go home, because dang it, three axons in one day is more than the average ARG'er should have to endure. Wink Oh, and I called the Axon Hotline again, and Grout and 01 start going, "WOOHOO, BEER!" and so it was slightly spastic and rambly. Sorry about that, Steve!

I had a good time, and was glad I went. I am cursing myself for being so vocal about Sears Tower and their security, because I was worried about an in-person interaction - the payphone would've been easy. And yet, the coordinate got removed, and I wonder if I was to blame at all for that. It's also possibly (it occurs to me now) that they found out the phones could not accept incoming.

Think outside of the box, and inside of the parking space.

Unfortunately, my picture of the look on the security guard's face is too blurry to really do it justice. I didn't zoom in, and my exposure time was set way too long.

I think the fact that it's blurry really adds to the picture, you can still see the expression on his face. Very Happy

I've already posted the story of my adventures for the 11:23AM Axon in the report thread... If you want to read it, I titled it "Adventures in answering phones...", so you can do a search for it if you like... There are pictures included. The only thing that doesn't seem to be working was the .wav file of me answering the phone... Not very exciting but... Here.

Q: Why are you breathing so hard in this recording?
The call came about five min early, and I was really engrossed in the little dootles I was drawing on my notepad. So the phone startled me when it rang, and I yipped and fumbled what I was holding. Everything went flying, note pad, pen, bottle of coke, backpack, digital voice recorder... Luckly, my digital voice recorder has a strap which was around my wrist.

I was surprised to see when I got home that the Axon went hot... I guess they heard me.

Yeah, that breathing was a little weird. Reminiscent of those old serial killer movies. Pft, at least you did the job. Good work.

Now that I think about it, I should have said "repeat" and handed the phone around the group. So, sorry to all you guys that showed up in Garland, Texas. At least our axon went hot, unlike that Mesquite one that apparently didn't work.

Ah well, at least we got to hear it on the website. Cool

35.247483 -080.805150 report

06:23 PDT - (35.247483 -080.805150) Charlotte, North Carolina

Went on the 24th on gave the wrong name (Mellisa instead of Operator). ReverbandWhiskey from this board was there. I went back this morning and got it right (send Hot Axon for "blip".) It was cool being the second one to hear the message. Very Happy

I took lots of pictures while waiting the first time as we were not sure what to expect. The phone I was at had lots of stickers and what not, so tried to document it all. If you care, the pictures are here:

Just a note. If anyone has large video files that won't upload here, PM me. I can host them on ARGN.

When Axons Attack!-Durga Video

I'm expecting awards for the quality of this piece Wink

This is the scne at 32.812838 -083.720501 10:29 PDT (Macon,GA)
The phone was inside of a Cracker Barrel. The manager came and talked to us before the call, that's why I included him at the end of the clip.

Big ups to sapagoo for helping me (finally) get this file out.

The interview with the manager is the best part of that clip. Hilarious! Even worth suffering through having to watch me hold a phone to my ear and then give a really lousy synopsis. Smile

Chicago 9:03 AM - There were 3 other people there besides me, not including someone who came up asked if we were there for the "Halo thing" and then left after he saw the site was covered.

The phone was in front of the Sun-Times building directly across from the IBM building (wonder if this had any factor in choosing a location Idea ). Four people each checking their phones at the same time to see what time it was didn't look suspicious at all I'm sure, lol. At least it wasn't by the Sears Tower, we probably would have been detained.

The phone rang a minute early and one of the guys picked up. They asked for the "Operator" password and that's it. No Hey_Soldier was required, maybe their voice recognition software was having a problem with it. It then went into the WAV that is on the website now.

If anyone here reads this that was there, I was the guy in the orange and red shirt. Smile
