I've been out of town and away from communication for a few weeks. I just found out about this today. Pixiestix couldn't have said it better. My life was forever changed by his creativity. He will be greatly missed.

A little bit of happier news - Dave's wife Marianne, son Tyler, and sister Michelle will all be coming to ARGFest this year. Smile

Thank you for sharing David with us!
David Szulborski

Thank you for all of the wonderful comments about my husband and Tyler's father. He loved that little boy with every ounce of energy he had. We are coming to ARGfest 2009 along with David's sister, Michelle. I look for meeting you there or seeing you again!

You will be amazed at how much Tyler looks like his daddy!

I absolutely love the book for Tyler idea and I can't wait to see it. Your comments touched my soul and helped to ease the pain a bit. He touched the lives of so many people and those of us closest to him were kept separate from his online family.

See you soon...loves to all and may God keep you safe!

While I didn't stay with the game till the end, I seem to remember comments by Dave about aspects and artifacts of Unnatural Selection/Monster Hunters Club being based on Dave's father's experiences in East Asia.
Would anyone who was more familiar with the game remember more about that and comment on whether any of that content would be appropriate for inclusion, somehow, in Tyler's book?
Michelle might enjoy reading some of that, as well, if anyone knows where to find it.

Dave's father spent a few moments with us at the luncheon after the funeral. He had no idea that Dave had used his memorabilia in the game. He said that Dave had asked his permission to use the items, but never mentioned what he wanted to use them for. He seemed pleasantly surprised that Dave had incorporated them into one of his games. Smile

I think it would be a treasure to include some of that material from Monster Hunter's Club in the memory book. Because not only was the story/game a Dave Production, but it's historical, and it's from family archives.

Dave's Memory Book DEADLINE EXTENDED to 5/24

Edited from Celina63's call for submissions:

Quote:
Tresbien came up with a great idea in chat a few weeks ago - creating a "memory book" for Tyler - stories about his dad from those of us who knew him, played his games, read his books... anything that can help Tyler learn about his dad, taken from him so early in his life.

So, this is a call for submissions to the Memory Book: Photos, impressions, memories, or creative works like artwork or simple puzzles... things you would show or tell Tyler to explain to him WHO his dad was - what he meant to you, the things he said or did that impressed or moved you. Pictures of appearances or personal encounters are especially needed.

Ineffabelle, who is an experienced and gifted scrapbooker, is going to compile the submissions using Scrapblog, and once finished, we'll have the book professionally printed (nighthawk graciously agreed to pay for this) and sent to Marianne and Tyler.

To send in submissions for inclusion in the book: Please email text file attachments and digital images (pngs, jpegs, or gifs) to theineffabelleSPLATgmail.com, with the subject "Dave Memories".

The deadline has been extended to Sunday May 24nd.

Please help spread the word by blogging, twittering, etc about this project!

We also need volunteers to PM people who responded to the main Dave thread and ask them to make a submission to the book. Please email me if you are able to help with this or have any questions at theineffabelleSPLATgmail.com.

Please see THIS THREAD for further updates!

Thanks!

Chasing the Wish was the first ARG I ever played and I'll never forget the magic of it all.

Dave will be greatly missed and the ARG world will never be quite the same again.

Great Sadness

I didn't know until today when I was notified of a PM sent by Sunny re: the Memory Book. I weep for the world's loss. Dave was a genius!

It's been years since I was forced to give up ARGs; my RL became too traumatic and demanded too much attention. My participation in CTW became like a dream of a better time in my life.

I made the Rune Stones for CTW and later stepped into the role of Phyllis and became so emotionally invested that I altered Dave's original storyline! He was able to roll like that and I never even knew I'd turned a bitchy villain into a redeemable heroine until after the game was over.

The most amazing aspect of the experience was that I could be BTS and still be a player! I only knew my small part of the overall scheme and wasn't told what I needed to do next until just before I was required to drop another clue or advance a particular facet of the narrative. Sometimes I only had an hour's notice to put out several hours worth of player interactions. And Dave was vague, folks -- he'd give me an outline and turn me loose to fill in the dialogue and set the scenes. At his end, he had to be, at times, as surprised as his players were! He'd grab those tangled threads, weave them back into the tapestry and never, ever told me to stop what I was doing. So on some level, the PM got to be a player in his own game! That must have felt like being God...

I made one other artifact for CTW -- with intense love I created a clay figure of a six-fingered wizard. It was supposed to be a prize but Dave told me he couldn't part with it. I don't know if it has survived and his family still has it. I like to think of his family having this piece of my love with them...

I never met Dave and only talked with him on the phone a few times -- especially on that frantic day when he was supposed to deliver a mask to some players and the place where I'd been told for them to meet "the delivery guy" no longer existed. Gawd, that was intense improv! The players thought Phyllis sounded giddy, maybe even drunk; I was freakin' the f*#k out! Dave was Mr. Cool, "Just stall them while I drive around and find some place else..." Oh yeah, come up with some reason why Phyllis doesn't know that a building, supposedly in her own neighborhood, has been torn down, make that work... LOL!

Dave, I was in love with you so deeply it made my husband jealous. I will always love you.

In too just found out about Dave's passing from Sunny's pm. I was stunned and immediately brought back to the first CTW. I was one of the women driving around NJ with Phyllis on the phone trying to meet up and get the mask that Amanda ultimately went home with. We had such a blast, strangers meeting up to go somewhere we'd never been as part of a game. For Dave to have been the delivery guy was a treat. (we actually kept a nervous eye out for mobsters showing up, we had no idea what to expect). Yes, Phyllis did sound crazed. Ah, good times. I am so sorry there won't be anymore of his games. What he created was truly special.

I just saw the news and am sitting here bawling. I wore my CTW t-shirt the other day and thought of him. I can look down on the sleeve and see where he signed Wes Keeler's signature. Now that shirt is even more special to me.

I had found this site by playing Push, Nevada as well and played CTW and loved every minute of it. SJCT, that night when he was delivering the mask... LOL That is a great memory. I wasn't the one getting the mask, but with me living so close, I wanted to be part of 'the action'. It was so much fun. We finally ended up in the bowling alley parking lot waiting for the 'delivery guy'. I remember when we were handed the mask, and he pulled off, I asked, that was Dave, right? Then we stood around taking pictures. (I will search for them, but I'm afraid they may have been lost on another comp Sad ). And then finally meeting him in New York at one of the ARG Fests. Very Happy

Here's another life Dave changed... Much love to Dave's family.

Hello all,

Also just heard about this today. Completely devastated as Dave and I had planned to work together on something we cared passionately about.

My commemoration and the story behind his website photograph here: http://futurlab.blogspot.com/2009/05/in-loving-memory-of-multiple-dave.html

Rest in peace.

James

I was fortunate enough to collaborate with Dave on several projects. Dave was an amazing collaborator -- no matter how chaotic things got, he was always there with his calming life force and brilliant solutions. He shared his knowledge and experience freely, and he made everything he touched better.

I'll miss Dave, but I am thankful for the time we spent working together.

Rest in peace, Dave.

 Remembering David

Sad Tomorrow will be one month since David passed away. What a very sad day it is for Tyler and me. David loved the warm weather because he was always cold.

I think of you always my dear husband. Fly on the wings of angels! We love and miss you dearly!
