Okay, first I thought they were simply counting the number of times each word was submitted, so I tested it.

The first time I entered ROCKS under my one email
and recieved: 217 people saw the same thing

so i tried ROCKS again with a new email address and got: thank you, with no number

so I tried ROCKS again and again, getting no numbers
then eventually after about 4 times I got: Only 1 person saw the same thing...

So I don't think they are actually counting. And it looks like they only have a few numbers that show up as responses(so its not random) either the numbers are a totally arbitrary thing to make the program seem more real, or the numbers mean something, maybe we should keep track of them?

Well, we definitely know the counting goes down, not up. That (maybe?) only a few numbers are keyed (217, 29, 9, 1, more?), and the "right answers" (the ones that tell you they will contact) don't work all the time for all people. In fact, it looks like they -stop- working after a few times....

EDIT: on this last point, the word coliseum, gave me the picture, but now it appears at the bottom as a word -not- in the database. but I still have the picture?

Seems like an awful lot of trouble for atmosphere... Or, it could be broken. Crying or Very sad

At this point, I don't see what could possibly be intended by all this seemingly random stuff we're getting. There are three possibilities, I think. It's either: broken; we are feeding it answers the designers never anticipated, and that is making the system wonky; or (kinda related to previous) the things we are getting are things that are meant for later on in the promo cycle, inadvertently exposed by our fiddling with the system.

The fact that words we enter get us unrelated pictures would seem to confirm this being one of the three, or a combo of all.

This is my first post, as well as my first ARG.

I hack Flash for a living, and they didn't do a very good job protecting their code.

I decompiled http://www.themosaiccollective.com/wdys.swf

and got the following images:

baby

school_kids

grad_hats

surfer

kiss

funeral

coliseum

surfer_falls

wedding

and finally, snowboarder

I parsed the code a little and found this page that has all the search queries and their responses.

Some of the more interesting queries in my opinion:

dorris place school gets you school_kids

three circles gets you funeral

basonary gets you coliseum

fasat gets you snowboarder

So I guess, all in all, I found out that... Dude is a snowboarder!

Nice to have you around Chezzo; hope you have many years of happy ARGing with us! Wink

Before you go on though, I must inform you that the "hacking" of game websites to find hidden, or "in-game," info is not an activity that is welcome in the ARG community, as it "pulls back the curtain" on the backstage workings of the game, something that the game's creators, or "Puppet Masters" in Alternate Reality Game jargon, have worked hard to create. In the most extreme cases, it can ruin the experience for others because "hacking" can sometimes reveal information about the future aspects of a game, sort of like being told how a book ends before you actually read it.

Luckily, this was a minor infraction that didn't really have much bearing on this game as a whole, so you don't need to feel embarrassed or bad about having done this. I just want you to know how things work since you are new to these things. There are some basic "codes of conduct" that all players are expected to follow, which you can find at the ARG player tutorial. So, expect to kind of learn the ropes as you go, and most importantly, have fun! Wink

On the other hand, "hacking" has different meanings to different people. In some cases, it is an activity which many of us cannot resist doing for ourselves -- in some ways, it is yet another puzzle to be cracked. Therefore, it is best to hide what you find out behind a spoiler tag (with sufficient description *outside* the tag to warn people what they might find if they peek) and let others decide whether or not this will spoil their enjoyment. Digging to find out how a Flash file works is fair game in my book. Personally, I thank Chezzo for doing the work for me and explaining it well. Perhaps it would be better to simply give the hyperlinks to those images rather than "hot-linking" with embedded images -- it's considered poor netiquette to suck bandwidth from the hosting site by forcing every page view to load those images here.

I agree with Catherwood. Great job Chezzo! Now come over to my house and teach me how to do that stuff!

Still wondering if the numbers have any significance, but now I'm more convinced we broke it.

If we were submitting keywords too early (for images that we haven't seen), I don't get why there no entries for two images really I did see in the promo (although one did work)....

Ah well, I stand corrected, then. I thought I recalled someone getting in trouble for doing stuff like this before, so I thought I would give a fair warning. However, I see that was not nessesary, and your point is well taken and understood. Carry on, all! Wink

Cool When you go to the site, it is now keeping track of your responses. You can view your correct and incorrect ones. I suspect since they asked for e-mail addresses that we wil be getting something from mosaic over the summer.

I'm excited about the show's premise and to see how they explore these issues.

So, after I watched:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I thought I saw the name "Gibbons" on an envelope

6 other people saw what I saw.... but it's not in the database.

Here's the best screencap I could get. Maybe someone else can improve it.
