[SPEC] Who is Jan?/Col. Ackerson/sIII

I posted this in another thread before the mods unlocked the main forum, which was bad and wrong. Embarassed I learned my lesson, so here it is posted in a new thread, like it should have been in the first place.

I think Janissary is an enhanced human, like a Spartan. She wouldn't be a Spartan II, like the Master Chief in Halo. I think she is a Spartan III. In the books, when Dr. Halsey (the woman running the Spartan II program) digs into a rival military man's files, she sees a file called 's-III'. The man's name is Col. Ackerson, and he hates the Spartan IIs with a vengeance. He has fought every attempt for increased funding, and was able to arrange near-impossible goals for the Mjolnir armor tests. He despised them because the Spartan II project got lots of military funding, while his own competing 'super soldier' project was put on the back burner.

If you listen to 'hey_dad', he seems very interested in what kind of tests they will run on Jan. Maybe he's worried that they will find something they aren't supposed to find?

Possibly something that would let her jump off the roof and get up again.

This also links in with the strange "spike on the baseline" in hey_dad when Jan calls James James "Dad". Col. Ackerson's project may involve significant genetic engineering and enhancement. Therefore, while J^2 is raising Janissary LIKE a father, he is NOT her genetic father. Therefore, a strange blip when she says "Hey Dad". Not exactly truth, but not exactly a lie either.

Col. Ackerson is also connected in high places (that's how he arranged for the extremely difficult Mjolnir test), and certainly possesses enough connections to create a fake identity for 2 people. As the gaps are filled in, it might turn out that J^2 IS Ackerson, but I'm not going to say that just yet. J^2 seemed a lot more caring in 'you_knew' than Ackerson is in the books.

Thoughts and comments are welcome. Smile

EDIT - moved to "General/Updates" - SG

I guess I don't see the connection to Ackerson or evidence to confirm quite what Jan is. I agree she seems superhuman, and superhuman in Halo scream SPARTAN of some kind, but Ackerson is certainly not the only person capable of false identities.

My other problem with trying to guess who Jan really is lies in the fact that we have no indication as to when this takes place. Pre Covenant War? Pre Halo Destruction? Post Reach?

I'd also note that Jan is probably not her real name either...

J2 might just be her civillian custodian...I would think a Colonel would have more discrete methods for disposing of evidence rather than burning an entire police station to the ground. The spike on the baseline implies that she knows he's not her father, right?

Maybe J2 'rescued' Jan from the life she was going to have as a genetically enhanced soldier for Ackerson.

[wildspec] Jan's true ID...Cortana!

This is the wildest of [WILDSPEC], but food for thought nonetheless...it was posited earlier that perhaps Dana was the brain used to make M. That was shot down because we are 500 years too early.

What if Jan was the human who's brain was turned into Cortana? I assume you must already be somewhat intelligent and military savvy to be useful as a smart ai. We also don't have a definitive timeline for these sound clips, just that it is after the start of the covenant wars and before the start of H2...they could feasibly be from before even Halo.

Finally, we have no tie-in for why M has these clips stuck in her head...maybe they are from her pre-AI life? That would make ILB like a Cortana Letters round 2, much more involved this time.

I know it's dumb...just thinking outside the box.

IIRC, Dr. Halsey's brain is the model for Cortana. The fact that Halsey isn't dead is one of the quirky things about those two.

Dr. Halsey designed Cortana like herself, I don't believe AI's are created using a brain as a template. Perhaps as research it might have been possible, but to actually use a human brain as a template still seems rather un-Halo to me.

I'm not so sure. He talks about everyone else that will get in trouble if Jan gets in "certain kinds of trouble." He also mentions his "unit." I'm pretty sure he is military, a member of a (to quote walkaway_girl) "SPECIAL special forces" group. In the books, these groups have a term called "acceptable losses." Burning down a building is almost nothing to these sorts of groups. ONI (the Office of Naval Intelligence) hasn't hesitated to sacrifice hundreds, even thousands of civilians and soldiers to get something done.

*EDIT* Did I really take that long to type this up?

IIRC, 'smart' AIs are created by scanning a human brain while running some sort of electric current through it. The procedure would kill a living person, and it damages the brain so it can't be scanned again. Dr. Halsey had a flash-clone (a clone with a highly increased growth rate, clones of single organs can be made) made of her brain, then had that brain scanned. I think it took at least a dozen tries for it to work.

I don't remember exactly how 'dumb' AIs are created, but I think they use a brain scan of some sort also.

Dr Halsey had several clones of her brain grown, of which Two were used to create the AIs Cortana and Kalmiya.

Oh, and only 'Smart' AIs are made using human brains [which are destroyed in the process]. Regular AIs are programmed.

Yeah, in the book The Fall of Reach, it is explained that they needed THE BEST AI to help the SPARTANS on their hijack mission...therefore they used the brain of the best scientist around...unfortunately, they still need Dr. Halsey, so they made a batch of 20 clones of her brain for Cortana, of which only one was successful.

I thought Kalmiya was a dumb AI? I don't have the book handy, but could someone check?

*EDIT* NVM, walshicus answered my question. I'm wrong.

"Kalmiya?" she said. "Status?"
"Yes, Doctor," replied the disembodied voice of her personal AI, her replacement for Cortana.

Quote:
Kalmiya was Cortana's older "sister". Dr. Halsey had designed and tested the software intrusion routines on her. Once the process had bee debugged and streamlined, she'd incorporated the routines into Cortana. The brass in ONI Section Three had been quite explicit in their instructions to destroy any prototype routines - and order that Dr. Halsey had promptly disobeyed.

I kind of assumed she'd been a smart AI from the above.

"Antiquated? Obsolete? Really?" She smiled and said, "Let's test your hypothesis, Araqiel. I supervised the creation of the template for every third-generation smart AI on this planet. I know everything there is to know about you, including your borderline disregard for human life." She paused and tapped her chin. "Maybe that's why you and Ackerson always got along so well."
"Colonel Ackerson is a great man. He's-"
"To answer your original question," she said, ignoring him, "this is the nexus of your being." She tapped the display. "Your code directory, the centre through which all impulses in your mind flow. And this"- she quickly typed in another command- "is the code that activates your personal fail-safe. It generates a pulse beam of high-frequency UV light in your Riemann cycling-thought matrix, clearing your high thought functions. It will effectively erase you."
"No!" Araqiel said and reared back. Flames roared about his crystalline skull. "Don't-"
Dr. Halsey punched the ENTER key.
Araqiel vanished.
Dr. Halsey sighed and closed the display. "A waste of memory crystal."
She wondered if the AI had been bluffing. Maybe not; ONI Section Three gave its AIs broad discretionary powers for dealing with security breaches. Still... she was happy not to have found out how far Araqiel would have gone.
"Kalmiya, please retrieve the data file and show me the contents of Colonel Ackerson's directory."
"Working, Doctor. There's some minor encryption to unravel. It should only take a moment." She paused and then asked, "Doctor Halsey, the UV fail-safe in Araqiel's Riemann matrix... are they planted in every smart AI? In me?"

So basically Cortana, Kalmiya AND Araqiel are smart AIs.
