Does this all mean that the old thread is going to go back up? I sure would like to continue my reading. I find this to be an interesting case study. I think everyone can learn something, even from this... ummmm... "game".

Hmmm... who's playing who?

At this point we have had a very real request from a very real person (we got proof in the form of a state ID, again in reality land) to remove the information.

Reality will always trump game clues, chaotic fiction, or speculations that there might still be an underlying game involving the Feds, Count Chocula, and the Easter Bunny.

No one cared that this was breaking uF rules left and right and pulling shit on players since the start, but since you're now all personally involved, it's srs bsns and I guess I understand this sudden vendetta against it. But it took a month and a half before anyone cared, and at that point--it's too late.

I'm sorry you feel this way, but this simply is not the case. I read the thread every day from day one. I first brought the game thread up to other mods very early on and I did a lot of work behind the scenes to check for funny business. My main concern in ALL of this has never been that the players are wrong for playing, but that the players are being manipulated and taken advantage of. So you have at least one advocate here - please don't paint me with that broad brush. Smile

so what you're saying is that this was an elaborate pregame that was a waste of time pouring so much energy into?

i wonder where that has been said before...

Yeah, there's a reason for that. We can't very well find out who the PM is, every time it's been revealed (and by my count in this thread alone, it's at least 2 or 3) it's been another meta layer of characters. So who's to say that the guy you claim is the real writer you've contacted, isn't just another character?

Yeah, there's a reason for that. We can't very well find out who the PM is <snip>

So it's been determined a better idea to attack the people that were playing it? Interesting.

And before the obvious is stated, maybe a lot of the comments weren't intended as an attack - but it's the perception of the receiver that counts here. I'm certainly not trying to incite anything else - but I wait to see whether the reply is one of uncaring sarcasm about someone being "too sensitive" - or if maybe we can get back to the community it once was, where there was support for what someone else was playing (even if you didn't agree/like it), rather than criticism for doing so...

Re: Not my intention to dissuade any one...

Okay, I shan't call you too sensitive. I shall, however, call you selectively blind...

(unfortunately I don't have a quote of my own here)

It's been said many, MANY times that nobody means to attack the players. You're the audience for our discussion mainly because it's taking place here on unfiction, and comments have been directed at you purely as replies to your comments directed at us. Some of you are attacking us for not seeing things your way, I think we have a right to respond.

I totally understand the feeling of investment that people have with ARGs (in general, and to a small extent this particular one), and why this has been stressful.

The person trying to run this game definitely pushed real-world boundaries, though, and forced the hand of the admins and mods to direct action.

Because I personally have no clue who is actually behind this (and it appears that there may be at least two or three Brickers out there now, right, so it's not even clear if someone may be trying their hand at gamejacking, do I have this right?), me posting in this thread is my way of having a meta conversation (sort of one-sided) with the PM, since it's pretty apparent he/she is watching.

I can understand feeling a bit on the defensive, but this is a two-way street, and as a long-time player of ARGs and a long-time creator of them, I feel it's in the interest of the genre and my livelihood to talk about the major issues of this sort of gameplay. Issues including trust, respect, and basic game dynamics that employ the use of faux/real illegal behavior - or tasks that divide, confuse, or frustrate a community.

I know many people like the excitement of confusion and the blending of the line between reality and game. It's a tricky balance to maintain for someone running an experience, because ultimately, too much confusion makes the game smaller. Generally, this is not a desired result.

The world is large, and contains all of us and all of our opinions, experiences, and histories.

If anyone DOES want to contact the REAL Bricker.. he's probably the one that sent Spacebass the email with his picture and ID. Although I wasn't really paying attention to which email he used so if anyone wants to leave that email on here, they can.

As it hasn't been posted here yet, FYI: the original thread has been put back in the New & Rumors forum. See this post for some clarification as to why.

So what I take from this is that the real PM decided his game wasn't getting enough attention, added another layer of meta, caused drama over here, got the thread taken away and put back... for some publicity. Shame he got more people leaving than joining Laughing

Well.. we don't really know what the PM is doing... or what his whole goal is.
Honestly, I'm willing to bet he's not even looking for a large or even medium sized group of players. It seems he's been trying to alienate and weed out players from the beginning.

Just spec but...

1) He might just be screwing with us for s**ts and giggles
2) Someone suggested something about recruiting pms?
3) Someone also suggested a psyche experiment
4) It might be more for publicity. Not necessarily to get more people to play, but to cause a ruckus and have a wider group of people just know what's going on. Or not know what's going on.
5) Gamejack by the real!Bricker in promotion of his new novel.
6) Arlen Rage is blindingly hot and causes the PM to lose focus.
7) Other.

BUT WHO KNOWS!

That to me is such a wild concept, I think I'll pick that one. Can someone "gamejack" content they created in the first place?

And considering I haven't seen pics of Arlen Rage, I don't have much to go on.
