The Identity Of An ARG
Advice Needed

Um, what if you start an ARG, but people mistake it for being part of another, already-running ARG?

The easiest way would be to identify the most disparate aspects of the games and do something in yours that totally doesn't work in the other game.

It's not always a bad thing, at least at first. I've been confused for other games, I've had multiple trailheads for the same game at the same time... Eventually you have to trust the players to sort things out.

But, actually, I tend to believe that the bigger burden of proof or denial is in the OTHER "already-running" ARG. They have to be ready for that sort of thing, and be willing to do to distant themselves from everything that's not theirs.

I disagree. Your responsibility is, first and foremost, with the game that you are running. You cannot count on others to watch out for your game. If players attach your game to another game, you either run with it or find a way to delineate from it. You can't expect the other PMs to do this for you - they may be thrilled to see the increased traffic & attention and decide to run with it while they can. Or, maybe, they think it's some really cool thing that the players are trying to add on to the game and they want to work with it. Or, maybe, they aren't even aware that it is happening. Or, maybe, they are and they are trying to do something about it but failing. You don't know and you can't count on them to be good little PMs that will have your game's best intentions in their mind or that they're skilled or informed enough to do it on their own.

Your game is your responsibility.
