Maybe I'm just finding clues where there are none, but I still think the missing "L" is important... L is the 12th letter of the alphabet and "twelve" also happens to be the first word in the document Elliot posted today.... So I counted the 12th word on each of the "Random" pages and got "the great intriguing place" could that refer to the Ocean???

Strangely enough Sylvia Plath one of Niel's favorite authors has an essay called Ocean 1212-W

Interesting find, Anne_wintermute!

I noticed that Niel and his wife enjoy Audrey Hepburn movies, which he blogged about right before they went on a "Roman Holiday". And "My Fair Lady" was based on the Pygmalion fable. Yes, I am the Queen of Probably Insignificant Details. Smile

Also, HI!

That is a very good find. I tried various combinations of "ocean 1212-w" without any luck, but maybe you're on the right path...

EDIT: I too think the missing L is very important.

While I was falling asleep last night, it occurred to me that the A-Z list of random things at http://nielheisenberg.fh50.com/random.html would be a great way to hide a alphabetical replacement cipher key. So I'm going to look at the number of words in each entry, the second letters, the last letters, etc. for an obvious key. Maybe someone else can think of another way to look at these. Not that I have any cipher to decode at the moment . . .

I'm convinced there's something hidden in Niel's Random pages...and I think the L has something to do with it. I don't know if it was just left out to draw attention or if it has more significant meaning, but it means something. Let us know how it's coming along...I'm not good with ciphers and the such (unless it's an "enter text here" online tool.) Smile

OK, here's what I came up with:

Code:
  #w #s 2 w l c N

A 30 13 l A e A AAW
B 34 13 f f d M M PC
C 13 13 a E h E CE SP
D 13 01 r I g P P
E 17 07 i t r E E
F 14 14 u M k M SK
G 12 12 e B a B GB NA
H 13 13 a w h - -
I 11 07 v t o - -
J 07 07 o t n - -
K 17 02 a F y F FK TM
L
M 06 06 a t r - -
N 07 07 o a d J JC
O 17 07 r u r S SO ME
P 06 06 e t r - -
Q 16 02 u D C D DQ S C
R 05 01 o M y M -
S 07 07 a t r - -
T 05 05 o t t R -
U 20 20 r K g K UKLG
V 08 03 e U d U TVU
w 06 02 i I k I WI
x 23 04 e t r O -
y 05 05 o f r - -
z 05 01 z T z - -

The columns are:

#w = # of words in total
#s = # of words in 1st sentence
2 = 2nd letter
w = first letter of 2nd word
l = last letter
c = 1st capital letter (after the bold alphabet letter)
N = capital letters from names in entry, sometimes including the bold alphabet letter

I don't see anything obvious. None of the things I looked at signal a simple letter or number replacement cipher because there are duplicate letters and numbers in each column. Any ideas, or am I wasting our time?

garymaher, I'm not really useful when it comes to that type of thing, but at first glance I don't see anything, although thank you for making that list, it could come in handy later on or there might really be something there.

Also, has anyone asked Sara how old her father was? I looked through the posts here and the comments on the LiveJournal, but I don't recall seeing anything about his age. Elliot's family members were 27 when they disappeared...

Like I said, I'm not good with this type of thing. It's all Greek to me. Smile But it just might come in handy, you never know. Good work.

There is one L in the first row under 2.

@env420: site has been pretty slow loading.
@garymaher: Thank you for the list. Couldn't resist playing around with the "c"/Caps but nothing sprang out for me. Sad
