[question] Where is Coral? Any of our professors of Halology have a reference to Coral as a colony? Inner or Outer? It would help in trying to timeline the axon files.

Unless I missed an entire chapter in the books... I don't remember a reference to a planet Coral
Nor in the instruction manual, bungie website or any of the Halo 2 previews :\
We should get confirmation from someone with a PhD however I'm just a BSc

Well, I'm behind this: http://nikon.bungie.org/misc/halostellarcartography.html and I've never heard of Coral. It's new to me, unless it was in the VERY SMALL print of any of the books.

spec on coral if it's not in the books or history, [spec] maybe it's under Earth's seas?

Is it the 42 light years away mentioned in four_goats?
Oh and Doc Wal, if it is - does that make it a likely inner or outer colony?

If it is, I'll have to run a search on all stars between 12 and 13 parsecs of Sol and see if we get a match for a K, G or F class. Might be able to add Coral to the Stellar Cartography Database...

Nope. Nothing. All stars within that range are either unclassified on my database, or else M or variable M class stars, which are discounted for the fact that they can't harbour habitable worlds [they're either giants and thus have swallowed their planets, or else they're dwarfs and thus their habitable zone is so close that lethal radiation would kill all life].

Well if there were, and Coral was 42 light years ...
is that an inner or outer colony?
I'm asking so that we might be able to put a maximum on how far back these recordings go.

Well, from my text here:
http://nikon.bungie.org/misc/halostellarcartography.html
Quote:
Inner / Outer Colonies: Just what is an Outer Colony? I had assumed that an Outer Colony was simply a human possession beyond an arbitrary sphere of development, centred on Sol - encompassing among others, Reach. In Halo: First Strike however, Lieutenant Wagner mentions that the Naval Academy on Reach was the closest thing he had to a home in the Outer Colonies. This implies that Reach itself was an Outer Colony.
Are we then to assume that Inner Colonies are simply those within the Sol system [Mars, Europa, Ganymede, Titan, etc] and Outer Colonies simply those that are not?
I personally believe that the Wagner's reference to Reach as an Outer Colony is a very minor mistake, as other texts imply that Reach is Inner. If I had to give an educated guess as to whether a colony 42ly away is Inner or Outer, I'd have to go with either moderately developed Outer, or else frontier Inner. Given that Harvest [the most distant Outer Colony mentioned] appears to be about 500ly distant, I would have thought that the Inner Colonies are no more than 50ly radius of Sol.

Thanks!
Interestingly that might help indicate that we're dealing early Covenant War or pre-CW here. Probably pre 2535 since that is when most Outer Colonies were destroyed. Jan could be a first generation SPARTAN then (program started in 2491 which means this could be around 2500).
However, Durga cannot then be a young Melissa. Even the appearance of the Covenants (2525) would be well past Melissa's due dates.

I should point out that Bungieverse planet names are usually "functional"; Reach, Basis, Threshold, etc.
Coral would imply an aquatic environment. Perhaps this is a cue that we should be paying attention to the emphasis placed on having tuna on the menu as a delicacy?

Didn't they pronounce Coral as "Ko-rahl" rather than "Ko-rl"? I kept thinking of things like... I don't know... the OK Coral or however it's spelt. I got a West-American feeling about it...

I like this idea.
Coral has properties that align it with a bee's hive. For one, it is a porous, rocklike deposit. These "pores" are very similar to the cells in a hive where larvae are hatched and/or honey is stored. Furthermore, there is a type of coral called "Brain Coral" or Brain Stone Coral" which you could bastardize into an allegory for the AI construct. (It's a leap, but if you are twisted enough, you'll see it too. )
[SPEC] Since Earth is a land-habitated planet - by the beings necessary to carry out the AI's tasks, anyway - it was necessary to come up with a metaphor for this aquatic planet's structure. Enter the beehive especially if you think in terms of "brain coral". Why not pick ants, then? Well, while they have the same overall characteristics as bees, they are silent whereas bees buzz - or have a "voice". (I said what I was trying to explain poorly, but am a bit frazzled from wading through all the Axon chaff.) [END SPEC]
Borrowing from the Haloverse, many of the Covenant beings have a reptilian/aquatic property about them (to me anyway) lending credence to the concept of an aquatic planet.
Why is tuna so prevalent, though? I have this Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home thing running in my head now. Except instead of needing a humpback whale, tuna is needed to repopulate a species. Of course, an alternative primary definition of "tuna" is American strains of cacti and its fruit. So, I may be totally insane.

But the Covenant do have a homeworld named, it's Harbinger (the name of the final act in 'First Strike'; it's a chapter in the realm of the Covenant).[/url]
