Recieved a message from Grayson on youtube.

"Search and you will find."

Guess there's something new out there.

This is from the Wikipedia article for Difference engines: "The problem with the methods described above is that errors will accumulate and the series will tend to diverge from the true function"

Is this the "mistake" made by Charles Babbage? And if so, is this a clue about the nature of the Wolfbane Project, that it diverged from its original purpose?

EDIT: Another Babbage engine: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Analytical_engine

Hmmm. The "mistakes" in typing in videos 1-6?

Babbage's engine(s) deals with mathematics, so do the mistakes in those videos correspond to some equation? Or is COTW talking about a different engine now?

Video #5

We didn't have a #5 video before, but one was just uploaded an hour ago:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sWYn9d0SHU

ETA transcript:
Quote:
...Something happened today. I was walking past the Subject's cage, when I caught his eyes. They were shimmering, and full of emotion. Not anger. Not rage at us for capturing him. Sadness. Pure, deep sadness. He did not move a muscle. And he didn't have to. Undeniably, endless sadness. I finally had to avert my gaze for I could not stand it any longer. I am beginning to feel that this project is wrong. In other news, the coldness continues. It keeps getting colder and colder in here no matter how high we turn up the heat. I must lie down now. I am very tired. Goodbye.

Hope someone else will grab the typos.

There's also a number 6 now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meiT4eFapf0&feature=channel

Strangely, the date for 6 is earlier than 5, 6 being May 30 and 5 being June 2...

EDIT: Reading through some earlier posts, I realized this video has already been seen...

Looks like both first mistakes are the letter "g." Hope someone else will double-check this. Not at all sure this is the right track. It says in this article http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/710950.stm that Babbage included errors to thwart industrial spies.

From what i saw, the first Error in number 6 is y not g.
Second line, first word, "Tye" instead of "These".

Ditto on seeing the "y" which opens nix-nada-nopey file. Would say we're in a real fix except......

Any day I can read about Augusta Ada Lovelace has got to be a good start. Very Happy

Technically, wouldn't the first typo in 6 be the / after the first sentence?

/g or g/ doesn't affect apache82.tk, and doesn't show a new file. Crying or Very sad

gotta catch a plane, but could the sum total of all errors be a vignere, with Babbage as the key?

This is A LOT to try and absorb!!! Shocked

Just thinking out loud and since I'm HORRIBLE with mathematics, I probably won't be of much help so, here goes!

CryOfTheWolf wrote:

The Wiki regarding Babbage's difference engine states that each calculation of the machine could be completed with 4 rotations of a crank on the side of the machine. Based on that, if video 1's typos are the starting point and 2 through 5 are the 4 turns of the crank, 6's typos would be the result.
This is probably useless since I can't think of any meaningful way to convert the typos in numerals though! Laughing
