Can this happen? I'm not an expert on Smart AIs, but it just doesn't seem possible.

I've made it to the system's core. I'm not entirely sure how. For the first time in years, I felt like a boy trying to get his toy to work by beating on it, having gone through everything else I can think of without a holo interface.

Sacagawea is in a thousand pieces. I don't know if they're connected by anything, but they sure aren't acting like it. I chat with one and it's quiet and cold, another is sane and kind, another is adoring, another is having a perpetual nightmare, and another hates me. There's so many, each different in some way. One of them is even dedicated to making really bad jokes. Some of them don't even have a personality, just programs doing one job, and only one, without halting.

Crazy AIs are the stuff of legend and war and stories at the bar. It doesn't just happen. I reviewed Sacagawea's AI profile before departing, and she is a young, advanced AI, not yet old enough to go rampant. No one would place control of an entire vessel in the hands of an AI that was anything but stable. It's just not done.

Then again, none of this is normal either. I'm having the computer dig for logs, attempting to determine exactly when this happened. It has to be in there...

Aha! It happened in slipspace, an anomalous spacial disruption. The logs have been garbled, so they didn't show up in searches. It messed up a bunch of systems... including Essy. She just shattered. One second we've got a single, sane AI; the next we have a million Essy-babies running around, fighting for living space.

The cryo chambers got some of it, too - a bunch of glitches, which explains why we're awake. Dr. Ward's death - the cryo chamber's still running, but it poisoned her when the anomaly hit. The rest of us are lucky to be alive. That's one loss. So far. A good person who died because of this insanity. I've got to find a way to keep it from becoming more, from killing the rest of us.

Dammit. One of the fragments is attempting to lock me out again. This one has been flagged as hostile. That can't be good. I have to stay one step ahead. Let's see what she's hiding in this labyrinth before she freezes me out entirely.

She's changed our slipspace parameters. Our next jump, she'll have us drop right into the middle of a rutting STAR!

Now this last one proved to be particularly interesting, all it is is a kinda puzzle shaped indentation into the background with a vaguely scorpion shaped red painting in the center of it, it may or may not be related to the SCORPIO link

By jove, I think I've got it. After a few rewrites of some key code, and a little more intelligent handling, I think my program's working again, and better than ever!

I'll let you know in a little while how it's done.
