[SPEC/QUESTION] Interactions on the chatternet? Kumal tells Sophia he "ghosted" his old girlfriend on the chatternet. I understand that this is done by tapping into information from a myriad of security devices, along with computers... thermostat monitors.
So all of these dates are taking place in real life, not online.
The part that confuses me is that even though Aiden is *in* Atlanta with Selene, Kumal is able to project Sophia's voice as though it's right between them. How could he do this? Is there a part of the Halo universe having to do with this that I don't know about?
If I didn't know better, I would have speculated that the date wasn't taking place in person, that it was in more of a simulated, realistic... "chat room"??? Can anyone clear this up?

Well, Aiden and Celine are in a resteraunt, so maybe there is some kind of mic on the table between them?

Eep sorry, I wasn't trying to invite speculation, more asking if there's something (like a FACT or just a "how things are" in the Halo Universe) that I didn't know about.

Nope, not your fault, I'm pretty sure I scared all the people though Yah I wouldn't have been crying if there was actually something proven *walks off the topic mumbleling to himself*

If the chatter-net/cell-phone-implant party is correct then I would suspect that it would be done much the same way 3D sound is done today. Add parallax (or the audio equivalent) in just the right amounts and the brain is tricked into 'hearing' the sound coming from somewhere other then where it is generated. Electronic ventriloquism.
If not, there is a reference in the file hi_aiden file to passing an electronic eye (or some such) in which case he may have tapped into the buildings PA system.
I lean towards the first as in the ghosting segment he talked about 'not' hacking her personal encryption in order to do the ghosting. This would imply a more personal location for the hack.

My thought was simply that there was some sort of identification implant that hooked into a wide network that also allowed people to hold conversations (sort of an updated phone/chat system, rather than a PA type of thing). Kamal knows how to get in there, listen to, and apparently to interject into, other people's conversations.
I don't know how closely that ties to the Halo world, as I'm not very familiar with that at all, but it sounded like sort of a neat, if very Big Brother, idea.

I know for sure that in the Halo universe almost all military personal have neural implants. Now if you look how the Internet evolved (its started as a very mundane military network then spread to universities) why not implants?
Now there could be other theories but this just makes the most sense given the situation at hand.

Diamond Age style mites in the air, maybe?
Dunno if this works with the Halo setting, I kinda lost track of Bungie stuff after Oni came out.

My understanding of the Chatter-net is basically a massive cell phone network. Except that people don't have cell phones in the future. Just more ways for people to stay in contact with one another, I guess.
Also, something that might be related. While the Master Chief was running around on Halo, Cortana discovered a teleportation grid (which she tried to use). Maybe some of the underlying technology of that was inadvertantly discovered by humans and used as a new form of communication.
As for the implant idea...I don't like it. Kamal mentions that he's wearing an ear piece on his first date. Maybe it could be like a hearing aid, or something of that sort.

You can buy a device today that turns any solid object into a speaker. It's not too difficult to imagine we have the ability to easily do this with air molecules or something in the future.
