Publious Enigma
ARG History question Etc...

Hey, I'm in the bay area and I've read a couple of articles on ARG's and am curious about a few things. I find the concept fascinating. I went to Wiki and checked out their article. Anyway down to brass tacks. The earliest example that wiki uses had to do with the SF Chronicle in 1996. I seem to remember Publious Enigma in 1994 tied in with Pink Floyds the Division Bell. Does anyone else remember this? and does this cound as an ARG?

Publius Engima
that old Pink Floyd thing

Spelling it properly (as Publius) and putting into our [search] page will get you a few relevant hits on our forum, such as:
http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=36448#36448
and other mentions in passing, comparing some of its clues to similar techniques used in ARGs, but no dedicated discussion thread that I could find.

Was it an ARG? That only begs the question: what is an ARG? (not going there!) It was a puzzle trail, it was online -- was it also in the real world? -- but did it have a story line? Were players affecting that storyline, or creating one in parallel? (still not going down that debate path) The Publius Engima and Pink Floyd in general cropped up during another puzzle game called The Stone. I find a lot of overlap in the various puzzle communities I've been in over the years.

I'm in the Bay Area too, assuming we're talking about the same bay. I just never subscribed to the Chronicle (yep, that Bay).

Publius Enigma
Responce to Catherwood

Well in response to your question if it was in the real world. Would the light show at the Meadowlands gig count as the real world? How about the fact that the initial Puzzle was introduced in a print version of a Pink Floyd fan magazine, and had references in product packaging (on the cover of The Division Bell, in the CD booklet, on the DVD of Live at Pompeii, on the cover of the reissue of Dark Side of the Moon) I also first heard of this in an issue of Guitar World from around that time. I'm also going from Memory of 2 different Wiki articles one on ARG's and the other on the Publius Enigma. I believe that the man in charge of the Puzzle did show up to taunt and drop false clues on various people who were discussing and trying to solve the puzzle.

Also since you are in the Bay Area What do you know about the Jejune Institute?

Publius/Jejune Institute
Response to ndemeter

Thanks, I live in Berkeley and see Jejune flyers tacked up on lightposts around here and an Anti-Jejune flyer. I saw a column in the Bay Guardian last week talking about it. The Jejune ones are odd and te anti-jejune bear a striking resembelance to the rantings of a Paranoid Schizophrenic, it may have some clues to the game printed on it.

thank you for filling in some real-world details. Obviously i'm not well-versed in how the game played out. I do remember reading an article a year or two ago which made me think there was never meant to be any sort of end goal. If so, that right there might disqualify it as an ARG in some people's definition. Either way, it was certainly a massively-muliplayer cross-media experience.

I'm south bay, not really positioned to play Jejeune.

Publious Enigma
Continuing Dialog

I admit I had to do a little research (Very Little), on the Publius thing. The Wikipedia article was very informitive. Although I take wiki with a grain of salt. Anyway I just looked at Jejune it looks interesting. I have work coming up beyond full time but I might play after that. I'd love to come up with one based around Phi. You know the golden ratio. Anyway every thing from the spiral of DNA to the structure of the solar system is based on this. I think I could learn to be a good puppetmaster I'm knd of like the Riddler with a Bubbler.
Peace Out,
Rev J
