A "race" can also be a current, a "raceway" being a term for a canal, with more specific terms, such as "millrace" for the canal guiding flowing water to a mill wheel.

Meltzer's cleaned up some, but a few pages from last week are still on his desk. Here's Celeste's message:
Quote:
Mark uh this is uh Celeste Roget after our last conversation... I cannot sleep. I'm trying to save you from what happened to me 10 years ago. Please listen to me. This Lutwidge, if this was even his name, he was like... a demented child playing games with other people's lives. Three days I spent digging out of an avalanche with my bare hands, because of him! My friends died because of him, because of his lies. Mark, do not go down this road. Do not trust Lutwidge, or any of the foolish games he left behind. Call me back? Au revoir.

More Lewis Carroll allusions

In the newspaper clippings on the wall, right side of the desk:

"Liddell" was the last name of the girl who inspired the Alice stories, one Alice Pleasance Liddell, while Lewis is, obviously, Lewis Caroll. Coincidental side-note -- Alice was a dark-haired girl of ten years when Carroll rowed with her, her two sisters and the Reverend Duckworth and spun his tales of Wonderland

BTW, "Lewis Carroll" was the pseudonym of one Charles Lutwidge Dodgson.

that last part got the hairs on the back of my neck to stand up. i love (and at the same time get creeped out by) characters somehow based on reality. it always raises the question " Was this what they were planning all along?"

that aside, i wonder if they will use Lutwidge in a manner befitting the Mad Hatter a la Batman the animated series from the 90's. think Sander Cohens' mentality applied to an Alice-inspired area in Rapture. It would almost put American McGee's Alice game to shame.

Right now, Lutwidge is seems to be playing more of a "Cheshire Cat" role, albeit with a malevolent edge -- sort of a spirit guide, dropping hints and clues along the way and woe be to the one who doesn't decipher his clues. That said, there *are* useful parallels -- Rev. Dodgson was something of a polymath, able to combine mathematical theory and gibberish poetry into a reasonably coherent whole.

I think, from the words "our" Lutwidge has used, he sees himself as the new gate-keeper (Opener of the Way) for Rapture -- ensuring that only the "best and the brightest," as defined by Lutwidge's own mad mind, gain access to Rapture.

Another thought, in line with a race = a current... How close (or not) is Rapture to the Atlantic Conveyor? The warm water current from the Gulf that flow up toward England (usu. depicted in red on maps) flows through the Northern Atlantic. Might it pass near a certain light-house out in the middle of the Atlantic?

the possibilities are endless for what an Alice-inspired reference to Rapture could mean.

from the BigSister being considered a Jabberwocky, the Little Sisters being Little Alices, hell, even Tennebaum could be friendly to Lutwidge, as the Dormouse/March Hare/Caterpillar...

Rapture is a wonderland...

as for your thoughts, you may be on to something, but i think the "Red Queens' Race" refers specifically to the idea of physically moving but not going anywhere... like continental drift (Pangaea theory said earlier), or the movement of a bouy on the surface, riding the waves, or even a machine of some sort.

Hurm... **grabs his copy of "Through the Looking Glass"**

"Well, in our country," said Alice, still panting a little, "you'd generally get to somewhere else — if you run very fast for a long time, as we've been doing."

"A slow sort of country!" said the Queen. "Now, here, you see, it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!
"

That said... if you permit me to crib from Wikipedia...

"Red Queen's Race"

"In evolutionary biology, to illustrate that sexual reproduction and the resulting genetic recombination may be just enough to allow individuals of a certain species to adapt to changes in the ecological niche they occupy - see "Red Queen."

Going through to "Red Queen"

"The Red Queen's Hypothesis, Red Queen, "Red Queen's race" or "Red Queen Effect" is an evolutionary hypothesis. The term is taken from the Red Queen's race in Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking-Glass. The Red Queen said, "It takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place." The Red Queen Principle can be stated thus:

"For an evolutionary system, continuing development is needed just in order to maintain its fitness relative to the systems it is co-evolving with."[1]

The hypothesis is intended to explain two different phenomena: the advantage of sexual reproduction at the level of individuals, and the constant evolutionary arms race between competing species. In the first (microevolutionary) version, by making every individual an experiment when mixing mother's and father's genes, sexual reproduction may allow a species to evolve quickly just to hold onto the ecological niche that it already occupies in the ecosystem. In the second (macroevolutionary) version, the probability of extinction for groups (usually families) of organisms is hypothesized to be constant within the group and random among groups."

Between the possible genetic witch's brew of splicing in the original game, what sort of genetic impact did breeding between genetically altered have on their young?? In bright shiny realm of Marvel comic books, Reed and Sue Richards spawned the cute yet nearly omnipotent Franklin Richards... Rapture isn't nearly *that* bright and shiny...

IIRC, Rapture has developed "Apex (Predator) Splicers"

Throw in Dr. Suchong's "rapid growth" formula, and I think Rapture has gotten a whole lot more "interesting" since Jack left.

well, i was about to go to sleep, but now i'm intrigued.

it could also have the twofold meaning of an allegory to the Big Sister, with the one large red light on her helmet.

going back to the evolutionary angle, i think that's it. the proces of changing to adapt to the environment presented is a form of movement without relocation.

good work. glad to see the links i posted rather hurriedly did some good.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Oh Magus you have begun thy journey, your master's temple has fallen, but his work is not yet finished, turn south by west towards great (couldn't make out the name) upon its shoulder shall you find the decrepit corpse of the red queen if you would run her race, then seek her crown jewels, they wait behind the looking glass follow the twinkling of gems oh seeker and you shall unlock the road to rapture

Which puts a whole different spin on that, eh?

huh... how about this...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
the crown jewels = Little Sisters?
behind the looking glass = behind the glassy walls of Rapture?
twinkling of gems = Little sisters eyes? or the lights still on in Rapture?

also, looking at the articles about possible aliases for Lutwidge, i did some google-fu and found that O.O.L. could stand for The Office of Oceanography and Limnology... though now called the ASLO.

Not sure I buy all of that, but its early yet. It fits, but there is plenty of room left to run.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I don't *think* the lights are still on in Rapture, but 10 years is plenty of time to try and fix the damage Jack wrought...

i haven't finished the first game yet (finally got it, i'm in Fort Frolic, creepy ass Cohen and all), i have a supposition:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
with Tennebaum still alive (shown in the demo at E3), and some of the inner lights are on, it's possible, but not likely. the Lighthouse, then?

I think we've nailed the one angle -- it is "a genetically enhanced shooter," after all... Beyond that, anything is possible.
