So, I'd like to take advantage of this hibernation period to try to summarize my take on the backstory here. If anyone else has additional or different interpretations, please chime in! [Note: This is based partially on what little I know about the Halo universe from playing ILB]

I think that Dreaming Eye's tale is essentially true and represents the story of how she got taken as a little girl and turned into an AI that eventually became Sacajawea on board the ship Lewis & Clark. She was playing hide and seek with her sister, and fascinated by space and the stars, she ends up hiding on board a spaceship, which ends up taking off. She is discovered and is taken to someplace where there are a lot of children to be evaluated for their suitability as AIs. She is tested and is found to be a "Prime" candidate, and after trying to escape, she is recaptured and the last bit we just got was what happened when they drugged her before the "operation" or whatever. The "scorpion" seems to be the symbol of this AI project, and I think it is interesting that the number that she was apparently given (541-P) (as mentioned in the latest story pieces) is the same number as the "fake" virus that the crew believed for a while was infecting the ship (as mentioned in the logs) but later was discovered to have been introduced into the ship encyclopedia by the AI.

The Lewis & Clark was on some kind of scientific mission when something went wrong in deep space. I happen to think that this was caused by the Forerunner artifacts that Isaac was carrying with him (as mentioned in the latest audio log), but that is just a guess at this point. In any event, the ship dropped out of slipspace, the crew was awakened, and the AI was fractured, just like in ILB. The AI fragments seems to include at least "Sys" which is the emergency system part of the AI, and "S/Essy" which is the little girl part of the AI, which retains memories of her original life. The 'hostile' tentacle could either be a 3rd fragment of the AI (which has shown signs of instability) or might possibly be an external element, like maybe part of the Forerunner thing, whatever that is.

That's about all I got at the moment. What have I missed/not understood?

Is that how AIs are created in the Haloverse (i.e., their neural paths digitally reproduce a human brain scan)? I wasn't aware of that. If that's true, sounds as though there's less allegory in the tale of Dreaming Eyes than I thought.

Yup, that's how AI's sre made, I'm a B19|-|4L0 |\|3rD, though strangely I found that out through Red Vs Blue.

Yes, AIs are created from an in-depth brain scan. So in-depth, in fact, that (at least during the Halo era) the scan was fatal. The only person to have ever survived this procedure is Cortana's creator (I forget her name), who rather than using her own brain to scan, managed to successfully scan a flash-clone of herself. This procedure (it seemed) was highly complex, and unrepeatable.

Unfortunately, that's not how smart AIs are chosen according to the Haloverse (RvB is not cannon in Haloverse). Because of how may resources go into the cognitive impressions that are used to made a smart AI, not to mention the risk of the 'smart' AI themselves, they only choose very specific people to become 'smart' AI.

The person must be extremely intelligent. Not just smart, not just stands out a little in class, but genius level intelligence. The reason medical washouts of the Spartan II program are used is because they are incredibly intelligent (they were screened for that before entering the Spartan II program), and are only useful as 'smart' AIs after their bodies are twisted and broken by the Spartan II training process.

The head of the Spartan II program, Dr Caroline Halsey, was also a perfect candidate for cognitive impression. But, she was also more valuable to them alive then an AI. So they created a hundred flash clones of her (at this point, creating a few more flash clones, highly illegal, wasn't that big of an issue), and only one cognitive impression of her brain was successful. That success resulted in the creation of the 'smart' AI known as Cortana.

Now, while 'smart' AI are very valuable, they are also extremely dangerous. After a lifespan of about seven years they go rampant, and are no longer controllable. It's much like having nukes. Yes, they are good weapons, but they are also so dangerous that the fewer the better.

Rampancy is caused by a number of factors. Melissa, in ILB, best summed it up as never being able to stop thinking. The AI grows to become so complex and so advanced that it literally goes insane, its mental state collapses in upon itself, and it starts doing things that it shouldn't. 'Smart' AI are NOT three laws compliant, so this poses a huge threat.

Most rampant AI go so far insane that they are destroyed, or destroy themselves. To date, officially, there is only one 'smart' AI that went rampant and remains stable, that would be Durendal. You guys probably don't recognize the name, he is from the Marathon games. The main 'smart' AI in the next set of games will be named Joyeuse.

But, in short, there is no way they would bother doing a cognitive impression of a random girl that randomly hid in a space ship. She would be useless to them. And the UNSF didn't go around kidnapping little children to create 'smart' AI in the first place. The only project that seems to have been given permission to have mandatory volunteer service at an age younger than eighteen is the Spartan II program.

Dreamy Eyes was probably a Spartan II program medical washout, like Melissa. She's remembering getting kidnapped, possibly one of the training simulations (they went through very thorough physical, mental, and psychological training starting at the age of six), and the memories of being confused, lost, afraid, and homesick have combined to create a singular personality known as Dreamy Eyes.

A good reference, I've found, is this fanfic: Wolf.[/url]

It's actually Catherine Halsey, and I clearly need to catch up on my Red vs. Blue. I think I stopped watching regularly right after season 2 or 3. Smile

Alright. After reading all 80-something pages of this thread (partly out of interest, partly out of sheer hatred of my job,) I think I'm gonna try my hand at this ARG thing.

Bear with me!

And we've got something VERY new!

On the PK node, there's the message ">NODE:DATA//WEAK ANOMALOUS SIGNAL DETECTED/FLAGGED FOR SURVEILLANCE" (Thanks Dante).

Upon digging/spidering, I found:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
FJONQOTUHAJTGW: >NODE:DATA//SURVEILLANCE COMPLETE/STREAM ARCHIVED/REF:REC18734ID0148

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
It's a PRE-Cryofreeze log from the chief medical officer (I think, I'll get to cleaning it up now, but I wanted to get this up straight away)!

We've also got her Bio hidden with pathlocks again. So it looks like we're getting things from S3 even when it's in Quarantine.

churning away with Anaerin in IRC...

I've found a total of 8 "pathlocked" items, which lead to 8 new "group" strings (the base-64 stuff). The "resolved" end nodes can be found at the following paths:
Code:
FNKZTRTUSCDK
PKRDCDYUFJUC
FJONWSTJEWERWCVB
FREJPYWOQMNCZNHLGD
FJONQOQHTVUMASSSSOON
FRSVXKWYATCCRXRKTT
FREJPYKSMTIGLAKQ
FJIFUDONIYCP

The group is all labeled as 20090714. (I'll let the decoders post the data)

Also, that "WEAK" string is found on one other node:
4890-73F8-9URO-HCB7 which is that one at PK off the front node
N329-08B3-D9HN-WBSP which is at FREJPYWOQM
Both have the identical line:
>NODE:DATA//WEAK ANOMALOUS SIGNAL DETECTED/FLAGGED FOR SURVEILLANCE

Additionally, at this time we have the S-4 process quarantined at the starting node:
018E-59A1-497B-B10E [[NODE:QNTN//S4]]
