New Guides Hint, 2nd step E-mailed:
A symbol is ever, to him who has eyes for it, some dimmer or clearer revelation of the God-like.
The very basis of language is metaphorical. We usually distinguish things by comparison; our basic description of the world around us is full of examples. When we ask, "What is it?", we tend to reply by making a comparison: we say it is like another thing which resembles it in some way, real or imagined. Within the described thing, object or quality, we seek some character by which it can be fitted into some human conceptual framework.
Like language, the alphabet is a metaphysical description of reality. Letters in an alphabet are metaphors for reality. Many different alphabets use the same shape-forms to represent different phonetic sounds, or different concepts. Others use multiple symbols for the same phonetic sound. To suggest, as some people have done, that certain specific uses are correct, and that others are wrong, is a form of cultural arrogance. Overall, these alphabets can be viewed in the same way as languages, in which quite different words and syntax may be used to describe the same objective phenomena. None is any better then the other, but one or other may be more appropriate under different circumstances.

Great minds! Heh. I posted the same thing in the interactions section. It belongs here, though...

It is not the count of dots, runes, spiders, & gryphons.
I separated out all the symbols that fall on single digit squares. but I haven't figured out 1st position.
From the pointer page source.

This is grasping..
The pictures form 1,2,3?,4.
there are three small legs on that third symbol, and 4 on the last one.
I'm not sure I believe this, but I mention it....

I'm guessing that pointer = hint rather than pointer to a direction.

I'm taking this to mean that the pictographs are an alphabet, but that multiple symbols can mean the same letter (which is why we have more than 26 symbols). Probably the matching symbols (the two eyes, etc) mean the same letter, but for some reason one may be "more appropriate" under certain circumstances?
Of course, I have no idea what that has to do with the modular times table.

Might we be dealing with sounds rather than letters?

Re: Grid, random remarks A few things that might become
relevant at some point:
1. The lengthy spiel about alphabets and metaphors also has the look of a direct quotation
from a "cognitive scientist" (as some linguists now call themselves). Not on
the web as far as I can see (nor, for that matter, on the Aglaura library reading list).
2. The Hebrew alphabet has 22
letters, as does a certain standard
Tarot deck. Also, you can get
62 symbols by taking the
letters in pairs (capital/small)
and the numbers. [Admittedly,
the last point is almost certainly irrelevant in view of the current
guide hints.]
3. The four symbols on the Carlyle
page appear to be sun/moon symbols.
The second is the moon rune, the
third is the scarab (isn't it?)
and the dragon is a sun/moon
symbol according to Blavatsky's
"Secret Doctrine".
No doubt some courageous soul is
wading through the Secret Doctrine
right this moment. It seems it
would be quite revealing. Mme. Blavatsky likes to quote Carlyle - and others.
