Anyone else think of SDCC when they read this? I donnu, maybe I'm just trying to talk myself into going to the con. I just have a feeling something more than an artist signing Bioshock 2 comics is going to go down at SDCC this Thursday...

Last I checked it was still sold out. If they open more passes though I'll go.

Update!!!!! Celeste sent a letter accepting Meltzer's apology and a letter from Lutwidge. It Bellman's Chart is another reference to Lewis Carroll, more info on that in a second.

ETA: The references are to one of Carroll's poems The Hunting of the Snark (An Agony in 8 Fits). Another Jabberwocky reference!
Meltzer still can't accept the fact that Rapture is under the sea.

Here's a link to the poem, though I think it's missing the preface.

Also, I don't think that Lutwidge was partnered with Ryan, because the letter says that Celeste's voice distracted the "Interferers" and allowed him to pursue the secret of Belham's Chart, which in the poem was a blank map that guided the adventurer's across the sea.

The Baker dissappeared when he said he found a Snark, which turned out to be a Boojum (don't question the sentence, it's one of Carroll's nonsense poems remember?). Also Thingumbob=the Baker.

In case anyone's interested, the first thing that popped up when I looked up the "Nine Unknown" that Celeste mentioned was the Nine Unknown Men, which led me to this, and another Atlantis reference.

Perhaps not partnered up with, but he *almost* has to have some relationship with Ryan:

A) He's making references to Rapture prior to its fall into civil war.
B) He's partnered with "A. Rianofski" according to the newspaper clippings above the desk, on the right of the chart. Andrew Ryan's birth name was Andrei Ryanofski.

This is suggestive of some sort of relationship. Likewise, as OOL is both the "Opener of the Way" and the "Obscurer of Labyrinths," he know the way to Rapture and actively seeks to hide it from others.

The Bellman's Chart (Fit the Second) was not blank, per se, but "represent(ed) the sea, Without the least vestige of land" as a overhead map of Rapture, from the surface, would be.

This would be because, like the Bellman, OOL "Had only one notion for crossing the ocean, And that was to tingle his (diving) bell?"

IIRC, Roget's expedition was front page news, very obvious, in search of her father (one of the Vanished) with forged items indicating he was there. The CIA and the KGB, whom Ryan seemed to be expecting in the first game, *may* be these "interferers."

However, I do confess that we have to come up with some way to winnow the truth from OOL's forgeries and fabrications...

I think when Lutwidge says "(which is me?)" He's referring to the fact that he could be a snark or a boojum. This has been hinted at before since he has been described as both the "Opener of the Way" and the "Obscurer of Labyrinths" as well as a "'trickster'/Rascal"and a "dangerous/liar".

Edit: Of course, he also could be asking which of the hunters he is. But since he's asking it could mean he's the Baker, since the Baker forgot his name and was the one who found the snark/boojum. This is all just speculation though.

I prefer to think of OOL as the Cheshire Cat... that way it doesn't have to make sense... at least, not at first.

There isn't that much distance between "trickster/rascal" and "dangerous/liar"... the jokes are all the same, except for the punchlines which tend to be a little more pointed. Think of the old slapstick movies -- a fella slipping on a banana peel and falling out the window is great fun in balck and white celluloid... in real life, not so much. OOL was a trickster to Lynch mainly because he hasn't done anything that put Lynch in any sort of peril... Roget has a stronger opinion, because OOL put her in mortal peril -- the same joke -- cunning forgeries and false information, but with a far uglier punchline.

To the surface-dwellers, I'd think that the question is whether or not OOL is a snark or a boojum. To Lynch, he's a Snark... to Roget, he was very nearly a Boojum.

just a random thing, don't remember reading about it on here anywhere, but has anyone else noticed a change in audio on the frequency scanner, the audio it plays? it just seems different but it might just be me.

it has sounded sleightly different to me, but not enough to really take note of, i think.

I agree, OOL would be the Cheshire Cat. While being a dangerous prankster, he is also a guide. He has a madness to his mothod, and yet a method to his madness. Something of a Riddler quality to him, IMHO.

as far as the poem/short story references, i haven't read it, and will let the rest of you sort it out. i honestly think it's just something that will take our minds off of the problem at hand... finding him, and subsequently finding rapture.

I'm sorry but has anyone else noticed that if you take the R off from "Rapture" on the album cover you can actually read something like "CAPTURED"... I just thought it was something funny that might or might not be relevant but that nobody mentioned before.

By the way great work all you guys do in here... i'm glad you actually keep updating Wink

A little more grist for the mill

New story on Bioshock...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Apparently one of the names in the game will be one Augustus Sinclair, he of Sinclair Spirits (from the first game) and Sinclair Solutions (from Bioshock 2's multi-player component).

The describe the new "Big Sister" as being a "The Big Sister is a strongly connected story chatacter" and "she's special, she's tied to the history of the city."

That is my belief as well -- Masha was there long enough that she didn't know what a tree was and thought it was a monster in a visit to Arcadia. Her mother ominously foreshadowed the depth of their mistake in coming to Rapture in the first game. She may have even been the Little Sister to process her parents for Adam.

As a check, I reviewed the other named female characters. The only other female character I can think of who is alive is Tenenbaum. Most of the others -- Diane McClintock, Julie Langford, Jasmine Jolene, Anya Andersdotter and Tasha Denu -- have a probable corpse in the first game. Age might not be a factor, given the regenerative powers of Adam, but there aren't a lot of females in the game with a story background left alive at the end of the first game.
