[SPEC] Beating the PQI

I posted this in the giant 100+ page thread yesterday morning, but it got lost, so I thought I'd post again here. Jan states that she beat the PQI--this indicates that she's probably very smart, like the officer suggests. It also is evidence towards her skills/superiority. Now, I'm not sure how relevant it is, but I've got a spec on HOW she actually beat the PQI.

If you follow the conversation, you'll notice that she frequently interjects her own questions as responses. Then, when the interrogation officer demands "Yes or No!", she's actually answering her OWN question, which will elict the desired response from the PQI machine.

Ex:

Interrogator: That's better. What friends?
Jan: It doesn't matter, does it? I'm the one that was in the restricted area. Only then the alarms came on and the MP's showed up.
(answers, "it doesn't matter, does it?")

Jan: You know how it is. (perhaps should be a ? . If it's in her head is what counts I think)
Interrogator: Yes or no
Jan: Yes.
(since she got iffy about the blood alcohol test a moment later, but seemed to pass the PQI with this yes, it might be the same)

Interrogator: Did you know before I told you, yes or no?
Jan: Hey was it a terrorist do you think? eh.. I mean, no, sorry.
(again, answering whether one thinks it's a terrorist. This seemed to me like a rather random idea to throw into the conversation, as well. We also know they "turtled a razor-back", which might be the vehicle in the ditch to which the officer is referring.)

Thoughts are welcome.

The replacing questions with others is rather obvious. You can tell the cop is catching on, and doing his best to run interferrence by throwing Jan off with his weird shifts of tone and mood.

I wonder if this method would work IRL

It could, though it would have to be done silently. There is no conversation in a polygraph exam, simply questions and answers. You would have to hear the question and do a quick mental replacement of it with one you were comfortable answering. You'd have to be very well practiced, since the replacement act could cause a spike and you'd have to internalize the question at least a little to understand you needed to replace it (for example "Have you used drugs?" -> "Do I kill babies? Of course I don't!").

A polygraph registers anxiety and considers it a lie response. Because of this, having a problem with a question is enough to make you "fail" that particular question. Let's say they asked whether you were an axe murderer. Through some cruel twist of fate, your grandmother was killed 12 years ago by an axe murderer (unbeknownst to the examiner). Now when they ask you the question, you know that you're not an axe murderer, but you'll get a horrible flashback to what happened to grandma and that'll probably spike your results, making you look like a liar no matter what your answer is (not that you'd say yes).

It is possible to beat a real polygraph. One way is to have inconsistent results (you give the same answer to a question asked twice but one reads truth while the other reads lie). Another is to be so incredibly worked up that you're all over the chart for the duration. If you have good physical control, you could do very slow, deep breathing while letting your heart race out of control. Regardless, a single exam is all relative to itself and requires a lot of interpretation. At the end of the day, a person (or several) look over the results thoroughly and give it a thumbs up or thumbs down. A real life polygraph is not an iron-clad indicator of truth, which is why it's not admissable in court. The future/Haloverse seems to have a better version.

Yeah, I noticed that exact thing and tried to tell people but with the axons going crazy, nobody would listen.

She (sometimes more clever than not) fooled it for most questions.

This is more evidence that either Jan is a SPARTAN, or some sort of AI that was made into human-form (somehow, the SMART questions lead me to think this aswell)
