[SPEC] Durga & the Navy Sentinels?
Quote:
source: jersey.wav
Jersey: You're a Navy sentinel, arent you?
Durga: No, there were two of them trying to get past your security bot, though.
What is the significance of the Navy sentinel AIs? What were they after?
Possibilities: It was completely random occurrence, the Sentinels were trying to invade Jersey's system with no specific intent, and the lines just serve to demonstrate that 'Durga' is a bad-ass AI not to be messed with. The Sentinels targetted Jersey (or his father?) for some reason. The Sentinels were actually after the 'Durga' AI, trying to continue their pusuit of her into Morelli's system.
I'm personally wavering between A and C. Any other thoughts?

Jersey is a hacker. The AI's were trying to track him down when Durga saw them and stung them.

I dont neccesarily think Jersey is a hacker. I think he is just a kid with a computer.

Since we can only spec here, my expectation is #3. Here's my breakdown:
A) Bungie has an eye to detail, and it would be a plot hole for two Navy Sentinals (presumably powerful AI's, given the awe in Jersey's voice) to just show up at his computer to break in.
B) We don't really have anything to suggest this really. On a wild spec, if Jersey's father is the Castaway and brought something "bad" onto Melissa's ship, maybe then the Navy would be interested in getting ahold of the family.
C) Durga is quite powerful, if she can take over Jersey's system so quickly, and easily turn away not one but TWO Navy sentinals. She isn't supposed to be on his computer (we don't know where she SHOULD be, just NOT there), so it makes sense that someone/something would be looking for her.

Not the sort of stuff the average computer user would know.

I think calling Jersey a hacker is a leap. 'Reinitializing the <whatever> package' might be akin to trying to reboot Genie. It's a future computer system where AI's are common, and we have no way of gauging the technical difficulty of such a task. While he does know things like Admirals are surrounded by packet gunners, this knowledge might also be common. Jersey doesn't do anything savvy enough to warrant the 'hacker' title, in my opinion.
On the other hand, there's somebody like Kamal, who's obviously a hacker. He breaks chatternet encryption and does sneaky things like follow Aiden using thermostat sensors. We can judge these things to be impressive because... well, Sophia is impressed.
Bringing this back around to the topic... Assuming Jersey isn't a hacker, what's the deal with the Navy sentinels?

Jersey:
1. Knows a lot of technical hacking terms.
2. Is used to coming in contact with unsavoury programs.
3. Knows a lot about hacking protection.
4. Has a security program, that can keep two nazy sentinels at bay.
Kamal:
1. Knows how to break encryption.
2. Has programs that can search through people's voice records.
Honestly, it's more of a leap to think that Kamal is a hacker, and you hear him hacking.

My wild guess is that Navy Sentinels are Dumb AIs capable of doing espionage and detection tasks. Nothing a smart AI like Durga can't quickly handle.

Also, Jersey is probably his on-line "handle" rather than his name, since he actually lives in new Jersey. I doubt he uses that name with his local friends (if he has any).

Oops yeah, I got a little carried away. Still - it seems weird that his name is Jersey AND he lives there. That must suck.

i disagree... Lolita, from the controversial novel... is just a child
"lolitic" would indicate that the anti-spyware/virus removal program that Jersey was trying to run was amateur, simple.... he's no hacker (unless she was just mocking him)

The guy has a security bot that two AI's can't crack and knows about the sorts of protections that Generals and SSF have.
Besides, it's probably just a technical term. In fact, it actually has a "v" sound in it, now that I listen again. So it's nothing to do with Lolita.
