Interesting, on the third letter from the left, to the above and left of the desk. The letter refers to their kidnapped daughter. Tons of misspellings and poor grammar (possible code?).
Anyway, they mention how her daughter was taken from her room and the dog was gored.

The town they live in is land-locked. Suburb of Dallas/Fort Worth. Hundreds of miles from the ocean.

What the hell? I thought all the girls were taken from coastal cities?

most of the letters on the wall are from real people playing the game.

Did anyone notice this from this web page?

David Tenenbaum, feature writer
David has written about science, health and environment for Technology Review, Environmental Health Perspectives, Bioscience, The Los Angeles Times, and other publications. Most recently, he and Terry Devitt wrote a Penguin Book, The Why Files: The Science Behind the News, (publication 4/28/2009). Although is fascinated by science and technology, David can swing a hammer: He wrote and photographed The Complete Idiot's Guide to Home Repair (Illustrated) and The Complete Idiot's Guide to Simple Home Improvement (Illustrated), both published by Penguin-Putnam. He also wrote both editions of the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Toolbox Manual, published by Thomson Peterson's. Nicknamed "Atlas" because he knows the biking roads, he's been Why-Filing since the Big Bang.

You can write emails to the guy, I already sent one asking for info about new types of sea slugs found in the "lost city".

Not sure if it leads somewhere but you never know.

If it doesn't, you're going to have one confused scientist. Still, it's wierd that there's so many references to Bioshock from this guy. If he isn't in on it, I wonder if he plays it?

Well the guy DID wrote back, but he said there were no updates of his article since 2005.

If you have not read it it talks about a place in the middle of the Atlantic with innusual volcanic activity called the "Lost City"......

http://whyfiles.org/shorties/172ocean_floor/

Edit: You can actually buy a book written by David Tenenbaum in Amazon (released April 28, 2009) with articles of the same web page.

Holy crap, I go to Yosemite for a few days and the game arranges a RL meet on my b-day?!? Is there a link or list of coords? I apologize for being "that guy" but I have read thru the past ten pages (?!?) I missed and all the coords I saw were in pretty exotic locales.

I'm going to be at Wizard World in Chicago that weekend so I'm probably out of luck but I have friends and family up and down the eastern seaboard so maybe I can send someone.

If not, anyone who does go grab extra swag, some of us have cool stuff to trade...Wink

One thing I don't get is that Meltzer found the jewelry box in the warehouse, hidden behind a mirror (looking glass, etc.). Presumably, the box had been there for a while. But the date in the box says 08/08 (August 8) but it doesn't point to a year.
Meltzer is in 1968, while we can assume the box was planted sometime between 1946 (first mention of OOL's Red Queen shtick) to 1958 (when Lutwidge disappeared, and most of his properties got torched/condemned).
Now what I want to know: Is 08/08 an annual thing, or is Lutwidge watching Meltzer, so he knows that 1968 is the year to get the return-to-Rapture ball rolling?

This is assuming a number of things:
A) Lutwidge is alive
B) Lutwidge has access to Meltzer, either directly or via Big Sister
C) Lutwidge is either in Rapture now, or hanging around NYC keeping an eye on things And,
D) Lutwidge knew that someone would find his recorded messages. Of course, he couldn't know exactly when.
Now, True or False:
E) Lutwidge knows that Meltzer has just discovered his recorded messages--found Scarlet Sovereign Im./Ex.--discovered the jewelry box--obtained the Bellman's Chart

Lutwidge's Message

i stand corrected on my previous post seeing that the coordinates and times are listed in the appropriate order as on the bellman's chart

yet i still think this puzzle lies in the notes, thus i recorded lutwidge's message (the one that plays upon opening the box) and took a closer listen...

"you have unlocked the treasures of the empress, but in the unbinding of the lock you have also found...the key, for the key points to the sea where the grandest treasure waits..but the sea has its own STRANGE SONG...if you find yourself stranded upon the shore with the EVIDENCE you long have sought, yet unable to advance then listen well...and take notes...

this is orren oscar lutwidge, one other lolling in drunken ecstacy on the way to RAPTURE"

i think that for people taking part in the "real life" aspect of this, they must provide the right song or, at least, the right note that corresponds to the location given in the jewelry (i.e. santa monica, ca the note is "A", so bring an instrument?)

persons taking part may also want to bring along music from the first bioshock (beyond the sea, rise rapture rise, cohen's masterpiece, etc.)

also the evidence you need might be something from mark's study itself (a letter, picture, or book) or a GPS unit to indicate you're at the right spot

the sydney location is at somewhat of a disadvantage because they will be the test group for everyone else to look to to see what works, giving the east coast of the U.S. the most time to prepare

UPDATE!

Two items -- a phone msg from Lynch telling Mark about Lutwidge's use of Lewis Carroll references, along with a copy of "The Hunting of the Snark" on the left hand lamp-table. It is open to the passage about the Bellman's Map, with a post-it marking the Eighth Fit -- The Vanishing.

Nothing we haven't already discussed, but reassuring to know we're on the right track.

Crap. I just realized, there's only one folder left in Mark's archives.

Shocked Oh noes!!

Maybe the final event is whatever we'll find on 08/08? Question

If you did not notice there are still another 6 tabs at the top where they could add mor folders for notes and clues Smile so it might not be over just yet. Very Happy

A big fat maybe.

There are a couple of possibilities. I think your assumptions are fair ones, although there are other possibilities -- Lutwidge may be one (or more) of Mark's correspondents -- his skill as a forger keeping his direct role out of sight.

I can think of a couple possibilities for "E" being true, esp. if you assume that the tech-level of Rapture is at or above that of the surface world. The metal backing, thin though it may have been, could have been completing a weak electrical circuit that, when broken by Mark, set off some Rube-Goldberg-esque series of events to alert OOL. OOL could have henchmen in the area... OOL would **appear** to have opposition in the area (look at all the unexplained fires... unless OOL was using them to conceal his path...)

On an unrelated note, it is me, or is the scanner pick-up getting clearer?

Location: Trying to figure out a way to give Tim a hug.

I'm glad Mark finally made the Lewis Carrol connection, now everything won't seem so cryptic to him.

Anyways, I was looking at the 2K forum and some of them think that this:
Quote:
...for the key points to the sea...
means that the song is in the key of C.

Edit: I put the wrong quote in, sorry.

it seems like it is to me, with what sounds like music from rapture, and the man speaking in gibberish, i tried to clean it up and see if there was more, but it seemed like nothing.

This might be a step backwards, but the keys on that music box show the sun, and thinking of the recent eclipse i thought of something. Some of the suns show the center blacked out, but other than that being related to eclipses, has anyone gone and checked where the moon will be on 8/ 08, the moon affects tides and it seems kinda dumb to me to leave raptures gate available for discovery 24/7, maybe on that date the moon will pull the tide enough to expose the lighthouse or something

The light and dark suns also correspond to black and white keys on a piano.

So I don't know how I missed this list before I posted my last post but I did. All I can chalk it up to is trying to catch up in an airport on an iPod. Sorry for my last superfluous post guys, good work on cracking these puzzles, you folks are brilliant.
