[Question] Durga? Tuna?

There were two things (there's actually more but I choose 2 for now) that stood out for me when I listend to the .wav files.

One was in the file 'Durga' when Jersey decided to name the AI.

Here is the dialog that I aquired from theBruce.

Jersey: That sucks. Ok, I'm gonna call you Durga
Durga: But what if that's wrong?
Jersey: Trust me, it's at least partly right....

What does he mean by "it's at least partly right". Does he know something about the name Durga?

Another thing that caught my attention was in the file 'Tuna".
I found it strange that out of all the items on the menu that tuna would most stand out. I know it's usually expensive, not the most expensive fish, but not enough to catch my attention. That's just me anyway. Razz

Most likely Jersey names her because she is a both feminine and deadly, and possibly he recalled the name from mythology and applied it.

I definitly agree about the Durga part. maybe it stands for something? D.U.R.G.A. ?

As for the Tuna, these are people on a colony far far away from earth where you are going to find Tuna. Not a far stretch to assume that its going to be an expensive import.

I'd trout you, except I can't find a specific link to send you to. These questions have been asked many times. oh wait here's one. Discussed http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=5893here Trout Raspberry Good luck finding the specific posts about it ........ just anything to do with the wavs has most likely already been asked and responded http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=5893here.

Jersey's knowledge of the name Durga

Typically a name is assigned to someone or something based on a characteristic of that person or thing. Jersey thinks for a sec, based on what he's just observed of Durga, and comes up with this name...trust me, he knows what's behind the name Durga. Smile

The things he's seen are primarily her female voice (and possibly appearance), and her ability to kill threatening entities. These are properties of the goddess Durga (lots of posts on the subject).

If there is some holographic or visual representation of Durga that Jersey can see, perhaps it's something visible that inspires his selection of the name...interestingly, a Flea has eight legs, and apparently most depictions of the goddess Durga show her with eight arms.

After having done a little bit of research on this so called "Durga":

Why think of the name Durga? Well, the last thing the AI said was that she couldn't read herself. She didn't have access to what she was. Turns out Durga is similar:

Durga literally means the Remote and Inaccessible Goddess.

Durga is a well known goddess (Hindu), so it's possible that Jason knew the goddess off the top of his head

http://www.indiayogi.com/content/indgods/durga.asp wrote:
As with all things Hindu, there is more than a shade of irony in such a description of a goddess who is probably the most popular and most worshipped form of the Mother ever in human history. She is no milksop goddess however. This is the Ultimate Warrior Goddess

This one is a bit more of a stretch, but Durga celebrations include using a reflective object such as a shield. Durga was a Warrior Goddess after all.

The word reflective comes straight from Durga's mouth.

Just my theory...

According to Dictionary.com, Durga was also known as "The Inaccessible". That might be the angle he's using to name her - since she can access information on anyone, but can't access any information about herself.

Either that or she has 10 arms.

I found Durga's reaction about what if her name is wrong to be more interesting than the name itself.

Perhaps, but Earth of the Haloverse is a very inclusive global culture. The UNSC Marines in Halo speak in at least two languages (English and Hindu). It's not too much of a leap to think that citizens of the USA in the Haloverse might know much more about the other cultures on Earth,

Speculation regarding Tuna: There are several species of the fish that are already endangered. It would stand to reason that if tuna fishing continues in it's current state, the fish would be nearing extinction in the future, making it a delicacy.

I suspect Durga is called Durga because the Hindu Durga is a killer of demons. In current unix terminology, daemons are programs running in the background (such as the web server, ftp server, etc etc, stuff that runs but isn't attached to the logged in user). Durga killed Jersey's AI Jeannie/Genie. If it's Genie, Genie would be an appropriate name for a daemon.

To figure out why Jersey names her Durga, you just have to look at the facts. He gives her the name and when she questions it, insists that it is 'at least partly right'. That means he has decided the name is suitable based solely on what he has seen of/heard from Durga. That is, her actions or appearance (presumably she is appearing on his screen in some form or another).

So, we have the 'killer of demons' idea, which I think is doubtful as I doubt Jersey considers Jeanie a 'demon' by any stretch of the imagination. There's the 'daemon' interpretation, but daemon processes are ones that run quietly in the background, and are generally not ones that a user would interact with. Then there's the 'inaccessable' part, which makes more sense as she can't look into herself.

However, I'm not entirely convinced about this. Forgive me if I sound disparaging, but why would a kid from Jersey know about Hindu mythology? I mean, it's not a common subject. Maybe he studies it at school or something, but it seems a bit out of the ballpark for him to just pluck from thin air like that.

If that's the case, perhaps it isn't referring to the Hindu goddess. The goddess interpretation is an obvious answer, and perhaps that is part of the problem I have with it: it's too obvious a solution. I think there could be some other meaning to "Durga"; perhaps it is meaningful in a way we don't yet understand, perhaps it's simply part of the slang of whatever century this story is set in. Perhaps it's a shortened form of some other name.

I guess I'm just suggesting that we don't all assume the Hindu goddess interpretation and try to hammer the facts to fit that pattern, because there is the possiblity that looks in this case are deceiving and we are overlooking another meaning.
