Maybe it's a viral for the movie "Gamer" coming out on Sept. 4th
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamer_(film)

There are actually a number of movies coming out on the 4th: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/2006960/future_movies_of_september_4th_2009.html?cat=40

Though I don't see anything "51" about them.

Got my email response from them.

Now this might sound odd... I'm not going to reproduce the mail response I got here, but suffice to say I feel as if they know me. Call it a hunch.

Like they know you? Someone you've been BTC with before, or just creepy in some respect?

When I say they might "know me", I mean in the professional sense.

Feel it's being done by someone "in the industry" (be it from one of the more known professional shops, an indie developer, someone here... who knows) and not just a random, anonymous, independent person.

Of course, I could be completely and utterly wrong...

Wouldn't that be poor form? Shouldn't they treat you the same as every other player?

OT: definitely looking forward to Gamer Smile

latest tweet: "so if the Avatar Marketplace were yours, how would you price items?" seems to tie it something Xbox360 related.

It's not anything they did. Just a hunch on my end.

For the record (you probably know this): "51mktg.com", "fiftyonemarketing.com" and "whatis51.com" are on the same IP address.

Different IP, so I'm guessing not.

whatis51 is not Video Game viral by what I can tell... September 4 pulls only one game on that date and it's "Champions Online" not very 51ish either...

If this is just some viral marketing demonstration, at the expense of their visitors, then boooooooooo.
Interestingly, if it is, and the 'community' finds out, their demonstration will include the result of a viral-gone-wrong - what happens if your target audience are not happy?
Of course, they'd likely spin it simply as number of visitor and traffic to the site due to a mysterious viral, rather than the community-oriented aspect and benefit of quality viral campaigns. But then the analysis would be incomplete, and who'd hire them anyway?

I hope, for everyone's sake, that it's for something legit...

What does strike me as odd is that, if "Fifty-One Marketing" is a real marketing agency, their WHOIS information sure isn't...

Quote:
Administrative Contact:
One, Fifty 51SPLAT51mktg.com
Fifty One Marketing
51 Street
Dallas, Texas 75249
United States
+1.1234567890

Zip code is Dallas, but everything else is crap.

Why would a real marketing agency make it impossible to reach them? Worst. Business Logic. Ever!

More proof that this is an ARG and not a marketing ploy?
