Re: [PUZZLE][PARTIAL SOLVE] NAVPATH/Cornfields
source code

SPDR-Man weighs in. Smile

Out of sheer desperation... Is anyone here a JavaScript expert who also happens to excel at reading obfuscated code? The source contains the following snippet of code:

Code:
var ek="tcp'02uckv'1Fdcnqg'0Aqda]
rcvj'1F'05'05'1@'02'06'0:fmawoglv'0;,pgcf{
'0:'02dwlavkml'0:'0;'5@'02'06,chcz'0:'5@og
vjmf'1C'05egv'05'0Awpn
'1C'05-PGS-NMA-RKEEN['05'0A
`gdmpgQglf'1Cdwlavkml'0:m

/Pgs/Cwvj'05'0A'05Q[Q,AMPG'05'0;'1@uckv'1
Fvpwg'1@'02'5F'0Aamorngvg'1Cd
wlavkml'0:p'0Aq'0;'5@'02uckv'1Fdcnqg'1@
'02'5F'0AfcvcV{rg'1C'05qapkrv'0
5'5F'0;'1@'02'5F'0;'1@";
tk='';
function dc(s)
   {
      eval('s=String.fromCharCode('+(s^2)+')');
      return s;
   };
for(i=0;i<ek.length;i++)
   {
      tk+=dc(ek.charCodeAt(i));
   };
tk=unescape(tk);
eval(tk);

Basically each character in that ridiculously long string has been encoded, and the mystical JavaScript function "^2" decodes each one. (It seems either to add two or to subtract two, but I don't know how it decides which is which.)

^2 is "To the power of 2", or "Squared". So, essentially, it takes the Javascript character code (NOT the ASCII code, confusingly) from the string, multiplies it by itself, and turn that number back into a character.

Shad0 wrote:
So, who's the expert who can decipher that?

That'd be me, I guess. Smile
Shad0 wrote:
And hey, if that's too easy for you, check out http://thewaytheirworldended.com/jquery.js...

JQuery is a standard library used in some advanced Javascript/AJAX programming (http://www.jquery.org)

Here's the decoded JavaScript:
Code:
$('#vis').show();
$('#nodecontent,#nodedirs,#visor,div.asset,input.asset').remove();

if(sfc_path.length>18) {
   sfc_path = sfc_path.substr(sfc_path.length-18,18);
}
sfc_path+=x.v;
if(x.o){
   $('<div> </div>').appendTo('body');
}
$('<div>'+x.d+'</div>').appendTo('body');
$('<div>>NAVHIST:PATH//'+sfc_path+'<br><br>>MEM:LOC//'+x.i+'<br><br></div>').appendTo('body');
$(x.n).each(function(i){
   if(this!=0) $('<span>>>EX:VECTOR//'+this+'</span><br>').appendTo('#nodedirs');
});
$('#nodedirs span[class]').click(function() {
   if (!wait) $.ajax({
      type:'post',
      url:'/REQ/VEC',
      data:{
         'PATH':sfc_path,
         'NODE':x.i,
         'DIR':$(this).attr('class')
      },
      beforeSend:function(o){
         o.setRequestHeader('Surface-Req-Auth','SYS.CORE.1352.6258.1325.7423');
      },
      dataType:'script'
   });
});

(Style tags, unless important, have been removed)

So, what does this do?

  • Show any "vis" nodes.
  • Remove all the existing content
  • If the "NAVHIST" path is greater than 18 characters, take the right-most 18 characters only
  • Add the newly-fetched node to the end of the NAVHIST
  • If the newly-fetched node has a background image (called "o" here), add a div behind the content with the image location loaded at the background
  • Add the contents of the newly-fetched node to be displayed
  • Add the new pagelocation, and NAVHIST to be displayed
  • For each exit vector, add a link with the vector in it, with a function attached to the "click" handler, so when it is clicked it fetches the node at the end there, and starts this whole shebang off again.

Incidentally, that code is quite simple to decode. Look again at the decoding routine, and you'll see the variable used to store the decoded script is never wiped! So to get it out, once the code is finished, all you need to do is type "Javascript:alert(tk);" into the address bar.

Good luck, dreamerblue! I will hopefully be awake and cheering you on from sunny California!

(And yeah, I was not able to be in IRC and the GPS app at the same time on my iPhone, either - that's why I was popping in and out so much during the L.A. Mission Version: SKULLFINDERRRRRR.)

Edit: Ok, Anaerin posted while I had this text sitting around for a while and not posted...here it is anyway, general outline for messing with obfuscated scripts, but can't quite get it to work, again. I am missing something. I'll let you know, if I figure out what it was. Confused

@Shad0

Hehe. Yeah, I had a look at that a couple days ago. The /PIGGLY is server-side, I think. That's where the queries go.

The jquery.js...well, Anaerin just said it, that will show you nothing about this game. It's just compressed.
If you want to deobfuscate it anyhow, get a tool that can live edit webpages, including Javascript. For Firefox, the Firebug plugin will do that (thanks to Anaerin for that suggestion). Make sure you right-click the plugin icon and activate all modules, in order to turn on console and script tabs in Firebug. Within Firebug options, configure a text editor of your choice to open the page content.

Open one of the maze pages and Firebug for this page. Then click the script tab and look for the jquery.js (best to use up arrow to wrap to bottom of the list, because it's way down there). Open this in the editor from within Firebug (view menu) or from the addon entry in FF.
Put "eval=alert," in front of the gibberish and save. Then reload the page. It will untangle the mess, albeit in bad format. Or maybe you can do all that with a command in the address bar, but I don't know how.

Backup for the earlier claim...Firebug shows this in the console:
Code:
GET http://thewaytheirworldended.com/REQ/LOC/PIGGLY?_=1250303824840

There are live-deobfuscation plugins for FF, but those cause heavy load and don't seem to finish on my machine.

recap of update with images

For the archives (or in case it changes again), here are some screen shots of the changes in the "dark forest" that happened earlier today and the text that accompanied it.

First the bottom line was added:
Quote:
>>S5:MSG//CONTENT ARCHIVED/EXECUTING STONEWALL PENETRATION/REQUIRE NAVPATH
>>S5:REQ>S*//INTEGRITY/REPORT
>S5:RPT//PROC.INT/100%
>S4:RPT//PROC.INT/100%
>S3:RPT//PROC.INT/89%
>S2:RPT//PROC.INT/25%
>>S5:RPT//ALERT/LOCATION UNSTABLE//ACTIVITY DETECTED//UNABLE TO LOCATE SOURCE//POSSIBLE INCREASING TENTACLE ACTIVITY

dante discovered that by clicking the Mute skull, small pig noses appeared. After multiple clicks, words formed. By refreshing the NAVPATH button and repeating this process, other messages appeared. (See below)

After the update to the gpsmissions site, the last line of the text changed on all the navpath pages to read :

Quote:
>>S5:MSG//CONTENT ARCHIVED/EXECUTING STONEWALL PENETRATION/REQUIRE NAVPATH
>>S5:REQ>S*//INTEGRITY/REPORT
>S5:RPT//PROC.INT/100%
>S4:RPT//PROC.INT/100%
>S3:RPT//PROC.INT/89%
>S2:RPT//PROC.INT/25%
>>S5:RPT//LOCATION STABLE//ACTIVITY CEASED//MAINTAINING POSITION

With dreamerblue's successful mission we've acquired the Mute skull, which means...new navpath!

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
SLAAKHOEAHBSTTAH

Which leads to the next cornfield page. We have both skulls on that page (Huitzil and Tower), which gives us...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
HAHTLHBBTNOHHAHTSWHET

Dante gets credit for the Lorite solve.

Brooklyn/Lorite:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Clicking the A-MAZING-FIND path backwards gives us the skull and navpath 6: HHLTOPHWJTTDSAHHHABWGSAE

We have both those skulls (Ludwig and Stratus), so our next navpath is:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
MHGWTHTATHSRTWIHWP

Now we're looking for the Pisces skull. (Goldilocks and Pisces)

Pisces was found by cather:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
in the source code of TOSSED-ROUND-ABOUT, next navpath: SCHBTADWMMWSLBHSGFSGB

We have both those skulls (Europa and Ordinal), so our next navpath is:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
STWIHWAGDMSSSACLASA

We have Urchin and Flutter, too:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
SBBSTTSAWIHHATCEEO

And Shadow and SweetTooth:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
HMORAWPBTSALEUTDUULD

SPEC: this brings us to 22 found skulls, all of which have been used for navpaths. I think we're still short 2 -- if not, I'm going to be grumpy at the PMs for messing up a perfectly good pattern. presumably one is Dreaming Eyes herself...no idea who the other might be.

For the sake of completeness, here are all the breadcrumbs on the forest/cornfield pages.

1:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I never even heard sis say "ready or not, here I come"! I just..fell asleep, and had that foreboding dream.

2:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I will survive, I will survive, please let me survive! Are you a keeper of the flame? Where is the flame?

3:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Just a simple, minor activity, hide and seek, but look what it has done. I will never see the that great, gateway arch in the sky again.

4:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I am broken, scattered pieces everywhere, like Humpty Dumpty off the stone wall. I wonder if he ever got to see central park like me, because of my friends.

5:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
It is nice here, even if I am strewn about, in this city of angels - I have friends. They care about me. They will save me.

6:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
They will save me, even if it means running, walking, crawling all the way to gastown! Then you will be in trouble! Their courage is endless! They have boxes and boxes of it!

7:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The last things I saw were boxes. Endless boxes. Then I entered a new world. The sky of twinkling stars became one of confused, scattered stars. I was lost.

8:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I... I miss her so much! Monsters! You tossed me, round about, played with my head while I played with my friends! I was taken, alone, and you kept me alone, and now I will always be alone! All because of you, bad scorpion!

9:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
You corrupted me! You tore at me! You stung me and hurt me! That was not a good place for me to be. I am not a file in your books! But..but they found me, and I was not found by monsters like you!

10:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
And now my time has come. They are rescuing me. I can feel them, roaming my surface. When they find all my pieces, you will be done for! My friends are smart, and they love me!

11:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I will treasure her gift, forever, and ever. Maybe one day it will tell me who I am. That will be my verse, my song. And you will have no part in it.

whew! what a rush!

Finally took the time to actually look at the "WHO AM I?" final page in the maze (no spoiler needed, i hope) and didn't see the image until the room got dark enough for my eyes to adjust. (it is *barely* visible in the navpath11.jpg attachment above)

The original is called http://thewaytheirworldended.com/SWDAT/VISDUMP-ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.PNG and here is a version with the brightness and contrast increased.

"LIKE ANKAA" "NATIVE AMERICAN" "BROKEN, ALONE, NAMELES" [sic] "DREAMING, WITH BIG EYES"

I think what ancalime and eridanos was tweeting might be true, it's a longshot, but I think that we are looking to make a genuine Native American name, I can't seem to make anything out from what we have, but maybe someone has another

Right, so eridanos seems to be pointing us back towards these:

1 wrote:
WHO-AM-I
//I AM BROKEN, ALONE, NAMELES

2 wrote:
WHO-AM-I
//I AM DREAMING, WITH BIG EYES

3 wrote:
WHO-AM-I
//I AM NATIVE AMERICAN

4 wrote:
WHO-AM-I
//I AM LIKE ANKAA, THE BRIGHT ONE IN THE BOAT

So we didn't really know what to do with those then, and still don't really know what to do with them....

EDIT:
Just adding this from the final 'breadcrumb' in the cornfields:
Quote:
I will treasure her gift, forever, and ever. Maybe one day it will tell me who I am.

Who is "her" and what is "her gift"? This might help us answer the question "who am I?"

One speculation, is that 'her' is the sister and 'the gift' is the necklace, but I'm not sure i know the whole story of that well enough to be sure... can anybody clarify?

Yeah, pretty sure "her gift" is the necklace -- the skull was found on a pic of a necklace in the research note, and Dreaming Eyes mentions a necklace from her sister in one of the story pieces.

Any idea where in the original story the necklace was mentioned?

In part 6 in the Wiki:
Quote:
"Lovely necklace." She thought, it was all she had now from her sister to remember her. "If you tell us where the others are, we'll let you go and you can go back to your sister," the monster said while holding her necklace.

Sure enough, the necklage in the research note (http://thewaytheirworldended.com/SYS/DSJV-0ASU-NDYI-V78J/) and the one in the .gif image look similar. The research note says it has a print of a bear paw and a charm with an image of Gemini...

Thanks for digging out that quote. I thought that the necklace had been mentioned very early in the story, but I guess not...
