subject Request from Fritz Sutherland

Hey Gang,
Thanks for applying to join the Society.
So I know this wasn't exactly in the job description, but I've got a little side project if you're up for it. Don't worry, Daniel's still cooking up some boring REAL research assignment for you, but in the meantime, I thought you could maybe help me out.

As you may have heard we recently uncovered some lost notebooks by the late Norene Z. Byrnes up in Vancouver. They aren't very coherent – in fact they're downright confusing – but we're hoping to extract some useful information. Daniel has been given the job of going through them, but he seems to think they're pretty useless. I'd really like to have another look myself, but he's keeping a pretty tight lid on them. Yes, even the Society for Linian Studies is subject to office politics.

We also found an interesting document. Daniel and Lyman think it's nonsense and of no interest, so I managed to get a hold of it. It's poetry or something. Maybe it's just the ramblings of a paranoiac (no doubt Byrnes was one), but I think there might be more to it. It seems ordered and deliberate in some way...

Anyway, I thought it might be good to get some fresh eyes on it. If you could have a look I'd really appreciate it. I've put up a little page where Daniel and Lyman won't be watching my every move. Not that they're oppressive, I just don't want to ruffle any feathers. They can be a little sensitive these days.Wink

www.rootsofatree.com

Feel free to work together. This isn't a test, Daniel will be providing that.
Oh, and please don't tell him about this, okay? I don't want him to think I've hijacked his research applicants.

Thanks in advance,
Fritz

Let's read some poetry! Surprised

I don't have the time to analyze the poem right now, but on initial observation, there is a number next to each letter in part III (End) and also the corners of the page say "the book", "the lock", "the tape", and "the key".

Surprised I noticed "the tape" and the numbers but overlooked the book, lock & key. Surprised

The block at the end of the poem is:
Code:
L(-11)   I( +5)   N( +5)   I( +6)   A(+13)   N( -5)   X(-23)
S(  0)   C(+17)   H( -7)   O( +5)   L( -3)   A(+14)   R( -4)
X(  0)   N( +2)   O(  0)   R( +1)   E(+15)   N(+10)   E(+19)
Z( -2)   B(+13)   Y(-19)   R(-12)   N( -5)   E( -2)   S(-14)
I( -7)   S( -4)   X(  0)   D(+20)   E(+19)   A(+23)   D(+20)

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Convert the letters to numbers, add the number next to them, then convert back into letters and it says:
A N S O N I A
S T A T I O N
x P O S T x x
x O F F I C E
B O X x x x x

There's an Ansonia Post Office Station in NY. but I don't know if that's the only one.

I suspect there's more hidden in the first and second part of the poem, but it's getting late and I'm too tired to think about it right now. Good luck everybody!

The first block says Haiku, but a traditional Haiku is written with 5 syllable, 7 syllable, 5 syllable lines, not 6-8-6.

Taking the last word in each line..."bloodline notebook holds answers". Not sure if "bloodline" is included in the message though.

Questions
does the linian line lead to a great city, as so many lines do?
can we find the clue invisibly hidden in their blood, so red?
how have they marked the structure in which they keep their secrets locked?
what roaring place have they found withinn which they may dwell?
if we follow the family tree through time, what fallen marker do we find?

what is the sum of their numbers?
what symbol do they worship?
what is the sum of their numbers?

The first section of part 2, sorta sounds like they are describing New York City and the NYC Main Library at 5th and 42nd.

You think Norene discovered something at the NYPL? Surprised
Interpretation of poems has never been my strength and the "Questions" part of Norene's poem is especially confusing. I sent Fritz a summary of what we discovered and asked if there's something about bloodlines in Norene's notebooks and if the Linians had a symbol that they worshiped. But I'm probably on the wrong track.

The Ansonia Station clue makes me think that there is a p.o. box at that station that Norene left something in that we've got to find.

I'm really surprised by the lack of interest in this thread. The puzzles are really interesting as is the story and the website designs are definitely professional. Anyways to get back on topic, I got this email for the research position:

Applicants,
Thank you for your patience during the selection process. I am pleased to announce that today marks the beginning of your trial assignment.

The assignment centers on a recently discovered notebook by the late Linian Scholar Norene Z. Byrnes. If you are unaware who that is, I'm afraid this position is not for you.

We at the Society have been analyzing this notebook over the past several days. It is unfortunately not as informative as we had hoped, but we would still like to generate a transcript for our records. I think you'll find that it provides an interesting portrait of Ms. Byrnes, particularly the second half, which chronicles her declining mental health and paranoia near the end of her life.

Your assignment is to create a transcript and analysis of the notebook. There are several points throughout that are suspect require verification.

The first portion of the notebook can be downloaded here:
http://liniansociety.org/research/nbznotebooks/

The second portion will be posted tomorrow morning, but I wanted to give the more industrious among you the chance to get a head start.

Thank you and good luck,

--

The entry dated 5/15/77 is written in red ink and has a large ink blot on the page. I think this is what goes with Part II. Questions from the page Fritz posted. I'm pretty sure I see the words "in public" within the ink blot. I'm sure there's more hidden in the blood so red, like maybe the word "library" is there too. See attachment below. Maybe someone who's really good at PhotoShop can work some magic and see what else is there.

ETA* I also think I see hidden in there, the words "William Ward". There happens to be some books on the genealogy of the William Ward family at the Main branch of the NYC Library. Maybe I'm trying to make this all fit the library, because that was my first thought the other day, but I do think Norene is pointing us there. Perhaps something hidden in a book. Dunno

The quote she writes, is about Osiris and is apparently from the First Book of Diodurus.

"the Egyptians are colonists sent out by the Ethiopians,
Osiris having been the leader of the colony ...
... Osiris ... gathered together a great army,
with the intention of visiting all the inhabited earth
and teaching the race of men how to cultivate ...
... for he supposed that if he made men give up their
savagery and adopt a gentle manner of life
he would receive immortal honors. ..."

Hmmm...alright, I'll bite. I like how professional this all looks, and their apparent nonchalance about long periods of time passing with little activity. Smile

Sent off an inquiry about jobs to the Smythe Institute, going through the other sites now.

Here's a transcript of Notebook 1 - Part 1, feel free to use it to send in to Daniel. I kept the misuse of the word "their" in the entry dated 5/23/77, where she writes about the Smyth Institute.

Norene Z. Byrnes wrote:

The elusive prize that every Linian scholar throughout history has sought is proof. Proof that the Linaians existed. Our records of history are subject to endless manipulation. I'm sorry to say that they are thoroughly unreliable, though we are all forced to rely upon them.

I hope my recently completed book will open the eyes of at least some to the story of the Linians. But even I know that the acceptance of their existence and all the implications will only come with proof. Most people simply aren't ready to accept that their notion of history of civilization is wrong.

Although the truth certainly rests in Antarctica, it's a lost cause waiting to see what really lies beneath two miles of ice. We may never find out.

But there is another way: blood.

Is there any chance that we may one day be able to trace their bloodline? What if the Linian cultural subconscious lay dormant in their descendants? This could be the key to the undeciphered mnemonics. The needed content. Most importantly, this would be the proof of their existence.

With work on my book completed, I now turn to this task.

5/8/77

If, as my studies have shown likely, there were two distinct Linian emergences, on is ancient history, caused by the earth crust cataclysm of 9,000bc, one in the 17th century, where did those that emerged end up? Did they integrate with the rest of humanity? Could it be that the sudden advances in civilization around the world could be attributed to their coming and sharing of knowledge? Perhaps there is more truth than once thought to ancient deluge myths. What if there are, in fact a reference to the cataclysm of 9,000 BC? The coming of great sages from across the seas, an event that appears in so many of these myths, may be a reference to the Linians.

A closer look at these early leaps in civilization may hold some answers.

Page 43

5/15/77

Start if research has been slow. Starting with mythology to determine most likely integration regions. Easy to get sidetracked with this stuff.

Egyptian

"with the intention of visiting all the inhabited earth and teaching the race of men how to cultivate... for he supposed that if he made men give up their savagery and adopt a gentle manner of life he would receive immortal honors."

The civilazat.....

5/18/77

There must be latent traces of the early Linian language. Egyptian and Mayan hieroglyphics may be regional mutations of the early Linian language and Chinese characters are a simplified abstract version.

Is there some way to trace this? Need to consult a language expert. Maybe Lyman knows something.

Strange note from Patrick at publishing house today. There seems to be some resistance to the publication of my book. Good to know someone out there noticed it, I guess.

5/19/77

Could any of these descendants be self aware? Implications are astounding.

Page 44

5/23/77

Who can say what became of the second emergence group? They too likely integrated into our society. And these more recent arrivals have a much higher chance of self awareness, lacking the fog of centuries. Look into ways of tracking the second emergence. Inhabited islands closest to Antarctica.

Turns out the group apposing my book is the Benjamin Smyth Antarctic Institute. I thought I might hear from them again. They contacted me when I first got access to William Hoover's collection. Their pretty sensitive about their namesake. I guess their asking that I remove any reference to Benjamin Smyth, which is preposterous. Patrick says we'll work it out. Pretty ironic, such a big institution going after little old me and my book that will probably be read by a hundred people.

5/24/77

Genetics may be the key. DNA sequencing. But I fear we're a long way from that goal. Need to really get focused on this once book is finally published.

5/25/77

I'm getting nowhere to day. Dead end after dead end. Can't concentrate with all that's going on.

No more work today. Have to go in and meet with Patrick. This damn thing with the Smyth Institute is worrying me. They're threatening to take us to court. Need to get a lawyer I guess.

Page 45

5/28/77

I curse Cognomi's lack of physical description. Surely an isolated culture would exhibit distinct physical characteristics. There, if uncovered, may provide a chance to trace the Linian bloodline. But G.C. says nothing of how they looked. In so rich a history, how can something of such obvious interest have gone over looked?

6/4/77

Is there any point to this damn search? Even if the Linian bloodline could be traced, what difference would it make? By now whatever history they hold in their blood is long diluted. I fear I must abandon this pursuit.

6/10/77

My last entry was a frustrated outburst. There is something to this I know it. Just need to get through this thing with the Smyth I. Patrick says the publisher is thinking about walking away from my book now. All this pressure is too much for them he says. Can't afford the legal bills. I guess Smythies have been loitering outside their building, intimidating their employees. I thought I saw somebody following me today. Who are these people?

Well, there must be a few more people playing this game somewhere, because the BSAI 2010 expedition is full! I just got this message back from my jobs inquiry:

Quote:
Thank you for your inquiry. Benjamin Smyth Antarctic Institute has recently concluded staffing for our 2010 expedition. We still encourage you to reply with your resumé and the color group(s) you are interested in joining. We will keep you in mind during future hiring periods.

I sent off my fake ARG resume and told them I was interested in the purple group.
