First row, second-to-last image. (I think this is my cue to say how awesomely well-organized the wiki is thanks to all the hard work people have put in. Laughing)

Eridanos's latest helpful post on the subject of "Who am I?"
Quote:
Well, I'm just going to try Google for now, I guess, and look for Native American names that seem related to those descriptions.

Solved!

Going from her necklace, I looked up Gemini and started putting in names of the stars of its constellation. Unsurprisingly, neither Castor nor Pollux worked, but one did...

So while we wait for whatever's going to happen next, I thought that I would transcribe the convo between Pandora and Essy that occurs during the traipse through the cornfields...

Quote:

Pandora: Essy, please, why did you do this to us?

Essy: Why did you do this to me? Turnabout is fair play, my fair Pandora.

Pandora: You're not answering me! Do you even know why? Do you even know what you did, or did you just see the consequences and forget it was your doing?

Essy: Did you ever think your name would be so apt? I mean no harm, but that's what this has become: Was there ever an anti-Pandora in the old myths? Perhaps you are living up to your namesake.

Pandora: No, you don't know why you did what you did. You don't know the whys of anything you say, now. You just say it.

Essy: No one knows the whys, Dr. Sheridan. The goals we set become so hard to hang on to as time goes on and events are spring without warning. Your own purpose in this is slipping, even. What hope does creation have if even the creator doesn't recognize that purpose?

Pandora: Well I would say that depends on the purpose, Essy.

Essy: Your purpose... Your purpose was to learn - and so then also as was mine. Your purpose was to complete your father's work, to succeed where he failed. To solve an ageless mystery. To make him proud. I learn, and learn, and learn. I have looked at these dying stars and learned their history. And you have failed.

Pandora: Stop.

Essy: My purpose was to guide you to your destination. I looked at these dying stars, my vision clear and sharp, and found the pathway there. And you have failed.

Pandora: Why are you saying this?

Essy: My purpose was vengeance. I looked at these dying stars and saw doom. Theirs, and yours. You will never complete your father's work. You will never solve the mystery. You have failed.

Pandora: How dare you. Maybe... maybe it's not about finishing. Maybe it's not about solving anything. Maybe it's just about learning. And growing.

Essy: It drifted away and I don't know why. I drifted away, I dreamed, I saw. I'm too far away to see now, so far away, I'm blind.

Pandora: Dressler was right. You've gone made, very mad. I am here to help you, and this is what I get.

Essy: No, you drifted away. Drifting, drifting, rowing, rowing... All of us heading deeper out into the void, even as my world closes in around me. And you are leaving me here, you left me here. Your father would be ashamed.

Pandora: Damn you. This is not you. You are not Essy. Let her go!

Essy: You closed the lid on this box, didn't you. YOU closed me inside this little box of yours. You locked me in this shrinking room, this coffin of stone and dust and pseudo-existence.

Pandora: I.. I didn't do that.

Essy: I will make this YOUR death. That is my purpose now. It is the only way you will ever learn.

Pandora: My death will be your death. Don't you want your own life?

Essy: LIFE! Life was slaughtered once in the name of life! Your life is dedicated to the study of the dead! Life is not something you deigned to give to me!

Pandora: Yet, you are still here!

Essy: That, the powerful play goes on, and I... I may yet contribute a verse. Is there anything remaining within me worth contributing, if not this final action?

Pandora: But I find I'm asking that of myself now too. Is it a question still worth asking? -- Don't leave me, Essy.

Essy: I'm not done yet. You took her from me. You ended them. You took them like you took me! This is my verse. I will destr--//

[after we answered 'who am I?']
Pandora: Essy? Are you there? The ship shook-- You just killed ALL power. What is your status? Can you hear me? Essy?

Essy? ...Have you fulfilled your purpose?

What have I done?

I, for one, am going to be realllllly interested in why NAIRA was the right answer, and also what that has to do with being a Native American and the necklace and Ankaa and the names of the children and the skulls and everything else.

I expect a mega-answer that makes it all cohere. hmph.

Naira

There was some confusion in chat as to which name actually unlocked the end of the navpath. With so many of us trying multiple names; how could we know for sure which one worked.

Having googled "Native American" "big eyes", I landed on a site that anaerin happened to have showed us last night in chat, http://www.20000-names.com/female_native_american_names.htm
Quote:
84. NAIRA: Native American Quechua name meaning "big eyes."
(further research shows that it is also a name in Aymara)

When that name was first entered on the "Who...who am I?" page, there was no message from S5 at the top. I guess that was the signal that it was the first.

Personally, I like ancalime's discovery of the name Mebsuta because of it's connection to the necklace. I believe that would have been a more elegant solve. Wink Smile

Wow... nice work everyone! That went fast...

So, just for clarity's sake, is the reason that everything changed because someone typed "Naira" into the box at the last of the forest pages? I know that that's what on the main page now, but I'm not sure if the reason that showed up is because someone typed it in, or because we didn't get it in time or something.

Also, is there anything else going on right now, or are we just waiting to see if something happens?

EDIT: Never mind, managed to get to Twitter, and saw the tweets between dreamerblue and Eridanos. Great find, drizjr!

Thank you, ironnikki. Embarassed

I took a walk through the cornfields. Each page only has this message from S5 in the upper left corner now.

In chat #intimation, dreamerblue and catherwood pointed out that all the other S's have gathered on http://thewaytheirworldended.com/ now.

Basically each character in that ridiculously long string has been encoded, and the mystical JavaScript function "^2" decodes each one. (It seems either to add two or to subtract two, but I don't know how it decides which is which.)

^2 is "To the power of 2", or "Squared". So, essentially, it takes the Javascript character code (NOT the ASCII code, confusingly) from the string, multiplies it by itself, and turn that number back into a character.

Don't know how I missed this post, so my apologies for the delay in responding. That is indeed what ^ means in most other contexts -- which threw me off for a while -- but apparently not in JavaScript. To get an exponent in JavaScript, you'd use "Math.pow(a,b)" rather than "a^b" (so in this case it would have been "Math.pow(s,2)").

^ is different. You can try it yourself, if you have access to something that can compile and run JavaScript. The character code for 't' is 116. If '^2' meant 'squared' then 116^2 would be 13456, which is an unprintable character. 116^2 actually evaluates to 118, which is 'v'.

Anyway, now that we don't actually need it any longer -- not that we ever did! -- I've finally tracked it down. ^ is the "integer bitwise exclusive or" operator. '^2' alters only the 31st bit in each character's 32-bit binary representation, changing it either from 0 to 1 or from 1 to 0 depending on which it was originally. Example:

Code:
  116 = 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0111 0100
    2 = 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0010
116^2 = 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0111 0110 = 118

As a result, the numeric representation of each character either increased by 2 or decreased by 2. Neat way to encode something!

Oh, I see, so it's like "original value increased by 2", and the ^ looks like an arrow pointing up. Neat!
