And I agree - cliffhanger likely, but how cool would it be to have a cliffhanger only a few days/hours before its release?

It probably wouldn't generate as much buzz as if they set up a cliffhanger a week or a month before the game's release. 6 months, though... that's a LONG time to leave people hanging. :\

AND there is an update!!!

Is this the same as the records folks got previously??

tl;dr The 5x5 grid cannot be hacked from my standpoint.

I did some more snooping around the structure of the site, and I found that the developers are very good at keeping secrets.
It turns out that when you complete a puzzle, you don't download the next components (the "prizes" as they're called) to disk. This is because when you complete a puzzle, your browser sends a request through a php authentication page, with a unique username and password. The server then sends back the data, and the conditions for storing that data. The browser is just not allowed to save the flash file to disk, and Firefox respects that. (FF instead stores it in the memory cache, type about:cache into the url bar for details)

As an example, when you solve the 4x4 grid puzzle, your browser sends this:
http://somethinginthesea.com/php/auth.php?token=6e511f9ab97a0f865a8ae1d957a0c099d75414243901bdc078d354c03ddedbaa&img=prizes/phase2/csg_video.swf
Notice the prizes/phase2/csg_video.swf in the url. (That's the 5x5 grid)
(There's also another link to an mp3 of OOL's cryptic message)
But when you click the link, you get a message back: Session not present. That's because there's some things going on server-side that we can't get around.

So, there is virtually no way of cheating on this (thankfully), and I am impressed by the level of sophistication that is going into this ARG.

Yeah but oh man, wouldn't you just love to get one of those Gibsons, baby? Ooooh!

/off topic joke

i think it's good they're being so secure. it's no fun to find the answers before the puzzle. sucks the fun out of it. Smile

concerning the upshot of all this i think we'll be left with a cliff hanger and maybe some special downloadable content first or something. i mean, even if Mark finds out where Rapture is, how is he gonna get there? is the place the bathysphere from the surface goes to still intact? how's he gonna get down there?

Is the coffee stained paper on the floor new?

"Found on the floor of SCARLET SOVEREIGN WAREHOUSE"

Did you guys ever figure out that the Red Queen was the Big Sister? The red lights....

There is this site, which is odd.

New message from Phil Isidore on the machine, plus a tape he sent. Not much new info.

Okay, time for another random stream of consciousness on my theories:

1. I seem to be noticing [TIAG]they've started giving out less info in each individual update? I think that's how they're going to stretch it out to accommodate the pushed-back release date. It's as good a method as any; it means they won't be forced to make up stuff as they go along[/TIAG], and I actually kind of line the suspense.

2. And yes, Inman is looking a little suspicious. Notice that he was pitting Mark against Celeste earlier (listen to his 7/14 message again). But if he is a bad guy, then what's his game? Who's he really with? Is it Lutwidge? Is he the one leaving the trail of clues for Mark to find?

3. What's with that folder that says, "FOUND SCATTERED ON THE FLOOR AT SCARLET SOVEREIGN WAREHOUSE, SORT & FILE!" on the floor? There's nothing in it.

I checked the page source for that site, there's nothing there, no hidden links, just the words "Scarlet Sovereign," nothing more. Did some player just purchase the domain and set that up as a prank? Probably, but it won't hurt to keep tabs and see if anything comes up.

hi!

Hi everyone, I've been watching this site for awhile and finally decided i might have something worth contributing. The latest puzzle has to be eight letters right? well listening to the clues given and going with letters, my guess is Anabelps. Its a fish that looks to have 4 eyes, lives in the deep sea, carries its young, and is derived from the Greek for "up-looking." matches all the clues no? Well please try not to be brutal if this makes no sense its just a guess! I'm not sure how the alphabet works on here or i'd try it myself. Probably not it but worth a try!!!

That puzzle has already been solved, look back a few pages for the answer.

No one here would be brutal or insult your guess. i have to saythat is a very good guess that you came up with you must have really researched it. and a fish "with" 4 eyes might look like a bouncer.

Hi, never posted before but have followed the forum for a while and you guys have done great so far.

i was just wondering, if the new puzzle is a five by five grid, there are twenty five symbols. The alphabet has twenty six letters, so might there be a break somewhere in the code which causes answers to be spelled incorrectly?

One of the buttons has two letters on it (X & Y I believe, might be Y & Z though, can't remember exactly)...
