christenberry,

I'm sorry, but I have to say it:

Obvious troll is obvious.

Nuff said.

Yes and your lingo is so delightful too!

As probably one of the few people here who has ever left their house or touched a woman's breast without paying a fee, let me enlighten you upon some trivial fact. Did you know that the term "troll" originated from Hawaiian and Californian surfers back in the 70s? It refers to poser types who do nothing but grumble and cause havoc at local breaks while possessing very few carving skills themselves. A type of professional cirtic but with no income. Considering the demeanor and habits of this group I would say that the term more rightly fits the lot of you.

Do call back when you learn English, though!

christenberry get your facts straight seriously. I am an admin on Five Eight Forums, unless you know for a fact that cyber attacks never happened I would ask that you keep your mouth shut. Read the post made by Thalagyrt. I have had like 10 to 12 hrs of sleep since all this crap started, trying to find out info and keeping our forum safe.

-rw-r----- 1 root adm 52829 2009-08-09 06:47 auth.log.6.gz

That alone should say enough, if you're familiar with how logrotate works. In the time since this first appeared on 5/8, the number of attacks has become so high that it has forced the log to roll over almost every day. Before that it went 5 days and in most cases even longer without rolling over. Of course it could be a coincidence, but the timing is pretty much right on. The only reason it's still on the same logfile now is because I'm IP blocking anyone who fails login 5 times in a row.

For those curious:

This is a 5 day period, from 2009-08-09 to 2009-08-14.
fiveeight:/var/log# zgrep Invalid auth.log.5.gz | wc -l
2453

JJ showed up.

This is the period from 2009-08-14 to 2009-08-21, a 7 day period*.

fiveeight:/var/log# zgrep Invalid auth.log auth.log.0 auth.log.1.gz auth.log.2.gz auth.log.3.gz auth.log.4.gz auth.log.5.gz | wc -l
9891

Those numbers are the amount of SSH attempts made. Lets extrapolate that

2453 / 5 * 7 = 3434 on average per week.

9891 / 3434 = 2.88x the number of brute force login attempts.

Edit 2: Of those 9891, approximately 1/3rd (3413) originated in the past two days, which is precisely when the call to arms was made.

fiveeight:/var/log# zgrep Invalid auth.log auth.log.0 | wc -l
3411

* I am not counting today as brute force attacks have been rendered ineffective due to the 5 strike rule.

Honestly, I gotta side with christenberry. A lot of what makes this ARG suck is the communal whining going on. I understand if you don't want to actively play, but come on. I hope you guys aren't like this in real life.

Aside from the PM freaking about the meta stuff and being really slow to post anything new, I personally think a lot of this is really awesome. The fact that the line between IG and OOG is so finely blurred makes this game a lot more interesting IMO, and the whole idea of misinformation might turn out to be an excellent move, if the PM can manage to follow it up.

I know I'm going to get a lot of "OH BUT PATRICK HACKED FORUMS" and "OH HE WAS RUDE" and I know diss is gonna come in all butthurt about how his info was posted on 4chan and how he has nothing but disdain for the game but still intends to post regularly. Honestly, if you put your info online, expect it to be harvested. It should be common sense to put a complete stranger on Limited Profile when you add them to Facebook just because of the fact that you DON'T know them.

I know this ARG is far from perfect, but christ almighty. Diss (for being harassed) and the 5/8 admins (for being DDoSed) have pretty good reasons for being upset, but that's about it.

You know, if this were any other place I'd actually respond to that at vivid length. But, frankly, I don't think we really need that.

And I like this place; would hate to leave.

But there are some things which must be said:

- I have personally seen DOCUMENTED proof of at least one broken Federal law, and the source of the violation is irrefutable. They decided to cyberattack someone who happens to be a network engineer at one of the largest collocation facilities in South Florida. Bad luck for him, if you ask me.

Any other violations are clearly up to a lawyer to interpret, which I am not.

- Regarding the U.S.C. 2257 comment... I did not say that *I* intended to report it. I said that I heard that *someone* intended to.

I am a software engineer and web designer who has in the past, among other things, had to do design and development of adult websites. So I know the details of U.S.C. 2257 probably more than you do.

- Ihe image post on 5/8 did not "yield the wrath" of the "4chan kids". It yielded the wrath of the PM, who proceeded to complain about it publicly and ASKED said kids to deal with it, essentially pointing the wrath of 4chan at 5/8.

- If it's a contest to get the "level of attention that this one has"... You win. 'cause I sure as hell am not going to pull the stunts this one did in order to get that attention.

 Whoops!

I came back to post that I seriously fudged up earlier in saying that Rachel's Walk would start soon.
I was wrong. Nighthawk never told me it would be starting soon, he said in a few months. I'm sorry for stating misinformation. Embarassed

To the new folks: Please stop Catfight!
I think it's getting ridiculous now. This isn't 5/8 or 4chan forum (apparently insulting people as "butthurt" is accepted?). Please read and abide by the forum rules if you're going to post here. Thanks.

ITT: Epitome of Internet Drama.

Unfiction thinks it has the rules to control all arg's. Laughing
Creators had no idea such basement dwellers existed.

And of course we also have our fun ironic people who think they know everything about Internet Law.

hahaha.

So if you hate this game so much, delete the topic, and don't publically advertise it on your forums.

If you don't want the PM's to be abusive to you, don't go on them.

And, for you guys protecting Dissesence, he's a total douchebag who pissed them off personally. You guys are so Personal Army.

"Oh hay, I can go to google and type in his email and post it on /b/ because that'd be so badass" = "Oh hay I can go to whois and found out who the PM is!"

Who said anything about having control over args? I'm asking please for you to stop dropping the f*bomb & being crude. Please respect the forum and those who post here. I don't think there is anything wrong with sharing our opinions, but that doesn't mean you have to be insulting.

On said forums, PMs insist that we do not talk about game content on unFiction. In the same post, PMs release my name and the name of two others, labeling us "cowards" and "the enemy". It is not well received.

- PM signs up as "Junko Junsui" on the 5/8 forums and begins to exchange words with the participants there. She is not well received. These exchanges include, among other things, (1) stating the entire population of 5/8 is "tainted by alcohol", and (2) posting the personal information and image of two prominent members of the forum without consent, mocking one of them and their personal photo from another website.

- PM states on another Facebook thread that the $38 T-shirts are meant to cover the cost of bandwidth expenses. In the same post, they openly admit to bank fraud by stating they had to "...steal from the Khozain account many more thousands."

what? WHAT?!
So because someone posted PUBLICLY AVAILABLE INFORMATION about you on a PRIVATE FORUM where only people playing the ARG were signed up, and ONE POST with, again, publicly available information on a forum where said people are well known and not wished any ill will, this necessitates some sort of retaliation?

Nowhere is there legal binding document that PMs can't post in UF or any other forum. It's just a suggestion for the enjoyment of players. This PM crossed the line as a way to do something new and innovative. He didn't realize that there are people that severely over-estimate their importance on the internet. No directed comment here, but people should really re-evaluate some parts of their personality.

Seriously, did anyone from 5/8 or here get contacted harassed by ANYONE via email, pm, or instant message once the information was posted? My guess is no. Granted, posting publicly available information on 4chan is out of line. This only happened after the exposition of the PM and the whole project.

And bank fraud? WHAT? You really think the PM stole money from an account? Don't you think that would've been noticed by now? Don't you think that it would be a pretty stupid thing for ANYONE to do except IN. GAME.

Um, actually it's part of our Terms of Service which can be found here. I highly suggest you familiarize yourself with them. Can't talk about other forums but here the rules are pretty damn clear.

If I only had a penny for each time a PM tried to be "innovative" by making uF in-game or thought it would be a good idea, only to have it come crashing down in flames I'd be able to retire comfortably.

I still wonder why the PM's don't get it. You don't get to sell your product by pissing off your player base.

My real name was posted on the private forum, yes, and I responded on that same forum with an IN GAME response (the other people mentioned in the initial post responded with "out of game" responses). Granted, a violent, aggressive one, but I felt it was within the bounds of the role in which I was cast. I accepted that.

Besides, my information's not all that hard to find in the first place. On most other forums I frequent, I'm the only person who has my real name in my posting signature.

The person from 5/8 that had their information posted had it posted directly on to Facebook and 4chan by the PMs themselves, without their consent. The fact that it was posted alongside a message asking those who read it to essentially "deal with this" didn't really help.

Yes, yes they were personally harassed quite extensively by the denizens of 4chan.

You want to do a "social experiment"? Go post your full name and email address on 4chan... See how much of a reaction you get. See how that makes you feel in the end.

Wait... what? You don't want to do that? Why not? Afraid of something?

I never said they did. As far as I know (and I do have my doubts, but do not have proof), the PMs have never posted HERE.
