Wow, didn't even finish my second thought lol...

I think that our characters in-game are ourselves. In the context of the game, we are internet users who have come across this information and are now interacting with these characters. I mean Wikipedia, real historical figures as characters, and personal information being posted. The PM is definitely trying to puncture the IG bubble - or at least stretch it out a little bit.

The big question is, where does a game (or alternate reality) end and where does real reality start.

Not to beat a dead horse, but it stops being a game when people try hacking servers totally unrelated to the game. I can understand a site being set up as an in game site and having someone have to break into it to further the game, but a server owned and operated by an unrelated party is crossing the line.

That said, I'm actually interested in where this is going now, so I'll be following along and seeing if maybe I can somehow fit in. However, the fact remains that attempts were made on two machines which I am responsible for, and I will not let the PM spin that as some sort of in game event, which he seems to be trying to do.

Ultimately, and ideally, it's where the *player* decides it does.

As exciting as it may be to feel out of control, being out of control carries with it a huge potential for problems and liability.

One of the things that I have always like about immersive games like ARGs is that I decide when I've had enough. If I have a crisis or major life thing going on, I can walk away from the game whenever I want - I can send phone calls to voicemail, and I can choose not to visit websites or avoid live events.

I have been utterly entranced by transmedia experiences in the past, but part of the fizz and effervescence of that immersive joy is that there is always a safety line to get out, and that safety line is all mine.

I don't know... in my pants? Razz

LOL!!! Sorry, just kidding... I couldn't resist... it was too easy. Very Happy

This has definitly been an instructive 1st ARG (If you can even call it that!!) for me... I love all of the vigorous debate on IG/OOG because at first I didn't think it mattered and was a little confused what the big deal was... but as I've been immersing myself more and more into the 'culture' I see the reasons for the accepted 'rules' and for having the Uf Forums be 'OOG'...

Now I'm just interested to see if the PM's are going to go down in a blaze of glory or resurrect themselves and pull it all out of the crapper...

EDIT: Holy Cow!!! This post just made me no longer a boot... Whoo Hoo!!! I'm a Veteran Biatches!! LOL!!! I'm not sure why that makes me happy... it just does.

IMO this game wasn't supposed to be as "real" as it seems to be. All of this meta stuff was probably not meant to happen.

I agree with this. I think the PM wanted this to be a portfolio piece, and wanted to feel clever about it, and got pissed when the playerbase figured everything out within two weeks. Personally, I think all of this hearsay about the meta-drama being "intended" is just giving Patrick an excuse for being a complete ass to his own audience.

No, that's retarded. Patrick wouldn't jeopardize his career with a crashing-and-burning project, especially one this high-profile, and he wouldn't go around being a dick to people for no reason using other people's money and effort.

Don't give yourself so much credit. Patrick doesn't need a $3000 project to be a dick to you. Rolling Eyes

You forget that other groups are involved (Maven Interactive, for one), and for every one group we know of, I'm sure there are more we don't know.

It looks more to me like the PMs wanted to disseminate information slowly. Maybe to prolong the game, or to create "tension". Either way, it backfired.

Funniest thing I read all day!

Anyone want to start a wiki about the PM's transgressions? It really is more interesting than watching some naked-genetically-engineered- warfare-fertility-cult-mama flop around a padded cell for 7 hours.

MENTION NOT INCOHERENT RAMBLINGS JUNSAI BOOKFACE.

Sorry. Just really frustrated that everyone's so focused on meta stuff and bashing the PMs when none of that's not important.

This is me by the way. Posting with diff handle cause I thought that having a guest handle and account handle the same would be confusing/break something.

That's actually against the TOS. Your only allowed to have one handle on the site.

The META stuff is REALLY common in these games, some of the players find their biggest enjoyment in looking into the who and why about the game itself so I would not expect them to stop just because the PM doesn't like it.

As for bashing the PM's, well.. They attacked players without provocation (and before anyone starts disagreeing with me on this one, check your facts. The PM bashing started after a few of the game vets tried to inform the PM politely that he was violating the TOS of the site by using it as an in game resource) and they also posted a player's personal information with the assumed intent that other players harass that person, and later suggested a group of players resolve issues relating to another site posting information on the game which lead to numerous hacking attempts against the site.

I don't understand why anyone wants to defend the PMs at this point. They have gone far beyond the bounds of fair play and decency with actions taken against the players for what is fairly common practice in ARGs. I can understand wanting the game to go on, the rules just need to be a little more defined because every time the PM steps across that line of what is OK and what is a personal attack they push another player over than line in response. I don't honestly know how many more pushes this game can take...

Not trying to be sneaky about it. That's why I pointed it out to begin with. Sorry if I'm treading the line or something.

Again I'm not trying to defend the PMs so much as I am trying to get back on the game instead of the meta. Digging up the meta info isn't going to reveal anything, I think. If we want this to go in any kind of positive direction, we're going to have to play the game.
