I'm going to get to the 11:05 axon at 32nd Street & Indian School Road in Phoenix, AZ tomorrow if it kills me. I was there yesterday and it didn't ring, but I want to try again just to be sure, I might have been late. Anyone in the Phoenix area going? I didn't see any more phones in the vicinity, but I might not have looked hard enough. I had very little time to do so, after all.

(By the way... yes, I too am a Penny-Arcader. *hides* But in the last few days this game has taken over my mind, and I'm desperate to contribute an axon.)

Gemini, I figured out why the 11:05 phone didn't ring!. I was there on day one (dual payphones outside the Bashas), and was pretty bummed. Here's why it didn't ring: The number for the payphone has changed.

Check out the Payphone Directory for AZ and scroll down to the bashas location, now do a mapquest lookup on the address (3131 E Indian School Rd). Sure enough, this is same spot as gps coordinates for the 11:05 axon. So, I'm convinced that we had the right payphone. So why didn't it ring?

Because the phone number has changed for that payphone. I looked on both payphones and they are different from what's listed in on the payphone directory. So, that's why the phones didn't (and never will) ring. Melissa is actually calling somewhere else.

But where? I checked both numbers. One resolves to a business called Aire Care in Peoria. The other is a registered phone number, but I can't resolve it to anywhere. It might be another payphone, just not in the location that we expect. I'll try calling in the morning (it's midnight right now and I don't want to piss anyone off by waking them up). If I get anyone to pick up on the other end, I'll ask them if they've been getting any funky calls at 11:05 these past few days. Assuming they don't think I'm a total nutjob, I'll instruct them on what to say to make the axon go hot. If it is another payphone, I'll post the location.

I saw the best minds of my generation deployed on Market, starving holding GPS's

posting themselves on the crowded streets at dusk looking for a coord fix,

haloheaded netsters burning for the axon heatable connection to the secret wisdom of the operator of hives,

for 'emergency' and 'law_abiding' and 'hi_aiden' showed up checking for
the SPDR vagueness of web hacking bots posting updates
the minds of players contemplating bees,

Wow - the very first Virginia entry for area code 703 is the axon I got on Tuesday- the one that was a block away from the lat/long coordinates at the Ballston metro station. But this site lacks payphones for the Potomac Mills area, so no help on narrowing down possibilities there.

chappy (and anyone else still working DC axons) - from the site linked below. Note that this data can be pretty old, but at least it's more ideas about where to look!

Ideas for the National Archives one (on Pennsylvania Ave) from one of the payphone sites:

inside of the National Archives
7th & Pennsylvania Avenues NW
The pay phone is located outside of the bathrooms which are located
off of the gift shop. (202) 789-9353

Somewhat near there (this park is by the courthouse and the Canadian chancery):

On the Pennsylvania Avenue side of John Marshall Park (202) 789-9587

corner of the Federal Trade Commission
7th Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue (202) 789-9469 789-9647

Metro
Archives/Navy Memorial Station
yellow/green lines
on the platform (202) 393-8871/72/73/74
(two separate banks)

Metro
Archives/Navy Memorial Station
yellow/green lines
behind the maps on the upper level (202) 393-9315 393-9308

Metro
Archives/Navy Memorial Station
yellow/green lines
behind maps (202) 393-8295 393-9310

(one of the metro ones must be the other exit and therefore unlikely to be the one we want)

in front of the Federal Trade Commission
building at Constitution Ave and 6th Street NW (202) 289-9396 289-9527

inside of the Naval Heritage Center next to the Navy Memorial
701 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
phone is next to the "head" (202) 783-9529

And anyone still working other DC axons - here is one near the 3rd & Independence coordinates:

on the sidewalk in front of the William J. Coburn Federal Building/Voice of America at 4th and Independence Avenue (202) 488-9658

AND back to the Natural History Museum (maybe one of these entrances opens earlier, like for an event at the Baird Auditorium?):

National Museum of Natural History
inside by the Constitution Avenue Entrance behind the big totem pole (202) 289-9467 289-9477 289-9460

National Museum of Natural History
inside by the stairs next to the Birds of D.C. exhibit across from
the Baird Auditorium (202) 289-9489 789-9078

National Building Museum
F Street NW
by bathrooms at opposite ends of the building on the entrance level (202) 393-9217 393-9215

Frankly, maybe anyone working DC sites should look at this:

http://www.payphone-project.com/payphones/usa/district_of_columbia/

The phone at the carousel on the Mall (we got it wednesday) is on this list, as are a couple more over near the Dept of Agriculture that were gotten Tuesday. I don't see anything referring to our missing phone on Church St. or the broken one on H St., though.

Well, I think the 11:05 axon is a dead end. The number now owned by Aire Care (according to the receptionist) is not receiving any wierd calls. The other phone number just rings and rings. I was hoping it was a payphone and that someone would pickup and tell me where it was. oh well.

I'm convinced that "melissa" is trying to call 602-956-1589. Does anybody know how to find out where that number resides? I tried reverse number lookups, web searches... I even called qwest to see if the had a payphone registry (they don't).

On a humorous note, the folks at Aire Care do think I'm a total nut job. How do you describe all this stuff to a complete stranger in under 30 seconds and not come off like you are a raving lunatic?? I gave up trying and just said that I was playing a scavenger hunt. *sigh* Hopefully they dont have caller ID.

Anyone else willing to/going to the 17:51 San Diego Axon? I got there too late before, it seemed like a bank of four pay phones would be our best bet, and they all appeared to work.

Hopefully they didn't mess up and pick one of the ones inside the san diego zoo, that would be the bummer. The coordinates seem to be based off of the 2920 zoo drive address.

There was three in San Diego? I was under the impression that there were only two {by the McDonald's near Ikea and near the Zoo}, and both got activated on the first day. Where was the third, if there was indeed a third?

There are only two in San Diego. Nobody went to the Zoo, apparently. This is hilarious, considering I saw over a dozen people at the first location all peeling out simultaneously right after the call. Then again, maybe nobody wanted to deal with the traffic.

I don't know. I got the impression from Nuriko's posts that someone did.

Washington DC Update
Thanks for the extra reasearch aliendial! What is interesting is that the number of the phone I waited by yesterday is at the "corner of the Federal Trade Commission" and had the number (202) 789-9467. Two digits away from one of the numbers you listed. It had a twin phone right next to it, but that phone was ripped out.
I will be back at the 13:02 site today, I will check for a phone "in front of the Federal Trade Commission building at Constitution Ave and 6th Street NW" (202) 289-9396 289-9527. If such a phone exists, I will wait there. If not, I will wait by the phones inside the Navy Memorial Metro Station (closest metro entrance). Or do you think the metro should be my first attempt?

I tried for the 10:35 site today during lunch with no success. There's no phone directly on the corner specified on the map I have. I had a little time to scout before the call, and these are the phones I found in the area (blue dots):

I've marked out in orange the areas of construction... any phone there is inaccessible or gone. The phone at 4th and Independance does not work, there is no dial tone when the receiver is picked up. There is no number posted, so I could not test to see if it rings. This is almost certainly the phone "on the sidewalk in front of the William J. Coburn Federal Building/Voice of America at 4th and Independence Avenue (202) 488-9658", but I did not have that number at the time to check. The phones at 4th and C I found are both functional (dial tone, ring when called), but they did not ring at the appointed time today.

Perhaps there is a phone inside the building at 3rd and Independance (guards claimed that there aren't)? I didn't have to time to check the corner of 2nd and Independance for phones.

I went to #3 for Jersey and it didn't ring. It could have only been this phone, and it didn't ring. The coordinates are 39.404469 -077.428227 @ 6:43 PDT

Reporting for Aliendial:

No payphones directly at the GPS coords. However, a very short distance away, at 1661 Pennsylvania Ave, there is a building called "The Renwick Gallery", and there is a payphone inside. Aliendial is putting all bets on this phone. Will update when more info available.

Aliendial Update: No dice... nothing happening at Renwick Gallery phone. chappy is checking out the specific corner of the coordinates, but has not yet returned to check in. So chappy may be having greater success. Will update if more info comes in.

Maybe we'll get lucky and it will keep ringing every 4 minutes until somebody picks up. Otherwise, hello is gone (until tomorrow).

Hey all. I'm a first time poster, but been playing the "make the axom go hot" game all week long. At any rate, there's been absolutely no one to my knowledge to answer the phone at the 37.116303 -76.464415 (1km South of Hidenwood, near Hampton, VA) location, so I've taken it upon myself to answer it at 12:53pm PDT. (it belongs in the "reflected" group).

Anyway, the payphone in question doesn't seem to be functioning correctly. It will ring (tested it with two cell phones), but we can't hear any dial tones or voices on the other end when we pick up the receiver. There's 2 more payphones in the vicinity (this is a mini-mall, complete with a Kroger & a gas station, as well as a Hardees, where I am posting from) that we will man and await phone calls.

Also documenting the experience with digital cameras and video recorders, along with this post via my cell phone. Will keep in touch and let the Hive know what happens.

Final Report for today:

Just a footnote to our previous report: it was Me (alienidal) chappy2, INCyr all there... no dice. Nothing happened outside. I found one payphone across the street and halfway up the block. Not very close, considering all the previous points being pretty close, but maybe that's what we'll try tomorrow. I've tried the phones and they DO accept incoming calls, so depending on what we see at the next axon, maybe that will be what we check tomorrow.

I have a quick quesiton about this. Does *69 work with pay phones? I was wondering that the next one that gets a call, if they can try to trace it. Just a thought.
