what is PM?

Puppet Master, as in the person pulling the strings behind the scenes of the game.

But in this case, I reckon it stands for "Pretty Moronic".

Please let's keep this positive and constructive, without falling to the level of name calling and flaming. Cool

I came here from 4chan. I must say that, moral or not, the attention that Patrick is receiving is quite deserved. After all, he did actively solicit Anonymous to participate in this ARG. What did he expect? The last PM to run an /x/-based game was raided FOR DAYS. I think we should just be glad it hasn't gotten that bad yet.

what do you think about this idea - what if all the links and the OOG sites featured are there ONLY for promotion's sake? what if it was actually intended to promote different sites and different music artists? what if the PM gets paid for that? think about it.

EDIT: imagine, what if his "revolutionary" idea was to incorporate the promotion itself in the process? what if The Knife etc. just paid him to post links to their videos over the game field. other bands, other companies, they just pay him to promote them and the players follow the links and watch the advertisement, unaware, that it is, in fact, fed to them in a form of seemingly senseless links?

Then they would use their own site, with advertisements that they would host, in order to make more money and have more control (especially over copyright protection). Instead, they are using Youtube, which gets them nothing but a little spurt in attention.

If Trentmoller and The Knife were small indie groups, this kind of advertising might make more sense. But this isn't the case.

Record companies absolutely hate using the Internet as a way of distributing/advertising music. Why would they choose this kind of model?

I'd been considering that angle myself. Seems possible. Is any of the music new?

But this hasn't overshadowed my belief that this is just an example portfolio piece the PM is putting together.

wrong. we are not supposed to think, that it is actually promotion. that was it is easier to promote things, we are to believe, that Junko honestly likes it. it is the real meaning of Puppetry - you are controlled by somebody, but you think, that you're acting on your own free will. so, you open the links, listen to the music and say, that it is cool; watch the photographs' portfolios and say, that they are cool. do you not think it is possible? what if he just makes profit from it all? from keeping people busy checking these links.

what if he promotes other people's portfolios through it as well? it is sure as hell his own portfolio, as "a new type of advertising".

I'm sorry, but I think that:

1) Not a lot of people would watch a music video just cause Junko posts one. Think about it. No one cares about "oh hey /x/, I really like Boards of Canada, so should you,"and those who do were probably already interested in that sort of music to begin with. The videos don't seem (on the surface at least) to be much of a part of the game. I almost ended up skipping them altogether had people not mentioned them in these threads.

2) Youtube is not a good place for promoting music on a major label. It is very easy to download music from Youtube. Websites allow you to download the flv directly or just stream the audio portion. Given how concerned major labels are about copyright protection, they would not see grassroots distribution as a viable way of making a profit.

Consider this: the video of the Wiggles dancing to Young Joc had the audio portion removed on account of copyright, leaving just the guys dancing, and thus totally ruining the video. Record labels do not like the Internet.

3) The cost for this production is too high to profit from online advertising. Youtube does not give these people any money for page views. This is a slick production, and the cost of hosting for the video stream alone would exceed any profit made from online advertising, if there were any. No merchandise is being sold except for those obscure shirts, and there is no private website where the record labels can get money from advertising or possibly sell CDs/MP3s.

Whoever made this game has not made their product(s) well-known at all, because none of us can really guess what they're selling. We're kind of just grasping at straws now.

As for a portfolio piece, that seems a lot more likely... but, all of this work just for a portfolio? Even though it's possible, it still seems like a drastic move...

I know their methods are strange, but amazingly in the last day or 2 I have finally felt fully immersed in this game. I suddenly realized this when I caught myself feeling open and honest contempt for the people on facebook waiting to be fed scraps of information by the increasingly erratic Junsui. I caught myself thinking of them as sheep, and honestly wanting to destroy them. Amazingly I don't even care anymore if MoT is really behind the kidnapping or not, I just hate the Junsui, even thought hey haven't directly attacked me. If the point of the first phase of this "game" was to build enmity between the 2 factions, then it certainly has worked in my case.

I've been feeling more and more immersed as well. However, I don't really "hate" either side so much as I want to know what's going on. I just want to know the "next big thing".

Baaaaa.
