I have a couple of problems with the time travel theory. There has never been any mention of time travel in any of the Halo universe. Yes, the crystal stretches and compresses time, but I don't know if it allows time to loop back on itself. They're quite two different things (one is still a linear progression along time at different rates; the other is non-linear progression over a self-recursive time "line"). That it does is pure spec.

Now, I can see how time travel would be necessary to make the game fit in with our current-day timeline, which I suppose is one of the parameters for the ARG. I've managed to overlook this, 'cause I'm new to ARGs. However, I think it's pretty important to see the potential for time travel for what it is. If anything, time travel is a plot device designed to get Melissa "to us" in the present day. However, the Cortana letters employed no such device, though they were arguably not an ARG. It's possible that the PMs are "mixing timelines", so to speak. However, I don't think there's any time travel within the confines of the game itself - that is, I don't think that a Spartan has traveled back in time and had a kid, or whatever. That possibility blows this ENTIRE thing out of whack, and I think that for Occam's sake, we need to discount it.

I do think that Jan is a Spartan III/Supersoldier candidate of some sort.

It's possible JAN can be a SPARTAN III specimen, yet she's too old for the required implantations. You have to be 13 - she's 17... unless Dr. Hasley became lenient and banished the implantations all together? But the implantations did explain why you can do things in the game, like flipping any/every vehicle possible (wraith, scorpion tank, warthog, etc.). But she does have fast reflexes and have quick judgement...

... that could also mean perhaps she did already have her required implants (four years ago and did survive the process). She also doesn't have a good relationship with her "DAD", which can be in this case, may no be her actual "DAD" but just a guy portraying as her parental guardian? I mean, to remain covert, guess he's playing as her "DAD" while JAN plays as his "daughter".

However, as indicated here, there are at least some extensively and clearly well researched specs about it.

Plus, Melissa has now said "I must determine the cause of the accident that brought me to this time".

So clearly she thinks she has travelled through time. Perhaps not a forerunner artifact, but we do still have an artifact unaccounted for..

EDIT: Fixed link.

Whoa, I missed the date rewinding in the books. I will have to go back and re-examine those dates. If that's accurate, then it appears that the crystal CAN cause time to fold back on itself!

Well, dang. I have to concede the probability of time travel. This just got a whole lot more complex. Very Happy

Here's something kinda odd about Melissa's memory:

http://www.ilovebees.com/reconstruction_archive.2.5.html

There's a segment that's unusual to Melissa's narration:

"... I will keep working through the drone and hum of busy days, counting down until the Revelation comes and I will speak in tongues of flame, a dark dove descending..."

It can be found at midpoint on the page.

'Revelation' sounds like something a Covenant Prophet would say, and the whole '... I will speak in tongues of flame, a dark dove descending..."

I doubt a UNSC or ONI AI would say such a thing; but if that's the case, that'd truly monkey-wrench what we've pondered what Melissa is.

Interesting. What do you make of "let it be known that retribution on any who hinder the return of the Queen will be swift and terrible," from the "Widow's Journey" story back in Phase 1?

I sometimes wonder if some of her memories are fake memories... installed somehow. What if there was a way to see if something should be discounted, and perhaps that could mean even more if we knew it was fake or implanted.

Just thinking about some other author of the text on the website makes me wonder. Screwy
