ARG Research

Hi guys
I've been lurking in this game a bit here and there and also met up with Classical, Wulf and Brian in Portland. (I hosted the panel where Brian was a guest). I wish I had played "I'm sorry" from the start but only learned about it when the game thread got taken off and the meta started. And then it was impossible to jump in because things have already gotten so twisted! Smile
I'm interested in the pushing boundaries topic, and if you guys would like to share your experiences then I'd be more than happy.

http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=27782

And... my condolences to you all that this game is over. I've been crying my heart out for my top favorite ARG before... and kudos to you Brian to make this game so dear to these players. I'm super curious for your future projects and hope to hear about them too!

But...if you're still really jonesing for a bit of I'm Sorry fun, you can still try to solve One For The Brood..., although the blog is gone, you still have enough of it here in the forums to proceed.

I'm game. Who is with me!

The Arlen Rage Blues
Friday, August 21, 2009, 3:13:27 PM | noreplySPLATblogger.com (No One)
It was many and many a year ago,

In a kingdom by the sea,

That a maiden there lived whom you may know

By the name of Annabel Lee;

And this maiden she lived with no other thought

Than to love and be loved by me.
I was a child and she was a child,

In this kingdom by the sea;

But we loved with a love that was more than love -

I and my Annabel Lee;

With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven

Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,

In this kingdom by the sea,

A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling

My beautiful Annabel Lee;

So that her highborn kinsman came

And bore her away from me,

To shut her up in a sepulcher

In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in heaven,

Went envying her and me

Yes! that was the reason (as all men know,

In this kingdom by the sea)

That the wind came out of the cloud by night,

Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.
But our love was stronger by far than the love

Of those who were older than we

Of many far wiser than we

And neither the angels in heaven above,

Nor the demons down under the sea,

Can ever dissever my soul from the soul

Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.

For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams

Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;

And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes

Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;

And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side

Of my darling, my darling, my life and my bride,

In the sepulcher there by the sea,

In her tomb by the sounding sea.

Just to be crystal clear to any mods out there - this game is over. I am not posting to a thread for an active game. 3viL is simply kicking around one of the puzzles that was never solved!

Thanks! Very Happy

Oh holy fuck, really?! And here I thought that code hidden in the HTML was just 'part of the game'...

Classical. Like I hinted in Portland, King was me. I lived through the 'dandelion film' moment and quickly escaped into law enforcement...and most of Port's thoughts and feelings were mine. Only difference is that I ended up working for a sheriff's department and then Lucas rather than becoming a detective in New Jersey!

And now onto textbooks! Quite a variety. Is that story about you being a tattoo artist and retouching the old tattoo of yours you told us in Portland also true? And that we keep reading the middle symbol as 'small animal' or 'rabbits' or thereabouts just a coincidence?

It is both amusing and vaguely depressing to know that I am not the only one who has something against dandelions.

Um, insofar as 'One For The Brood', Annabel Lee keeps reading as Annabella (i.e. Bella King) to me. But I have no reasoning for that other than the names look the same and I may or may not have spent all day pouring over the manuscripts again, so that's stuck on my mind. (is classi working on something secret? perhaps perhaps)

For some reason I always thought it was Rage and Jenny in the poem... since it was the Arlen Rage blues.. and Jenny was thrown up into a tower basically.

Also, SECRETZ?

Completely true. I was a tattoo artist from about 1991-1995. Total coincidence that my fuzzy Chinese can be interpreted in a way that fit the game. There were a lot of those funny coincidences, huh?

Oh, I forgot to mention there's an Annabel Lee tavern in MD. Although I feel like we might have touched on that a long time ago.

Schwinnnnnnnnnnnn. Smile

True life and art

Quote:
Ah yes...it seemed that there was some expectation that I'm Sorry was the first indication that The Largest Most Complex ARG in the History of the World had been lanuched. This was news to me and I was actually pretty surprised to see just how many links DreamsEnd was able to draw between I'm Sorry and the whole Theresa Duncan, Ong's Hat, Matheny mess. It affected the game because I wasn't prepared to counter it initially and I think it turned a lot of people off and created a paranoia that really affected the game during the start-up. Two of the five computers that I used were hacked during that time - creating quite a bit of trouble and costing some money for IT support. At that point I thought about throwing in the towel but then decided to just get defiant and motor through it.

Brian Bricker! High Five(r) to you friend! You did a great job with allowing that to not derail your project, and also using it to also let it add an extra layer to the conspiracy elements that were involved with the game over all.

Obviously, you probably can't discuss where that came from (did they even explain?), or why they jumped on your game, instead of any others, but all I can say is thank you for letting the barriers blur between your "reality" of I'm Sorry and the Real Life reality that you were dealing with. [Been there, got the t-shirt as to nefarious aspects of RL sifting into a game and not really knowing how to advise people playing that they might indeed be monitored by people that had nothing to do with the actual game.]

Over all, the story was amazing, the follow through on each and every detail was so well executed and I love the fact that you went so far as to set up a lot of physical locations to play a part in the game, if anyone should have happened to be able to go there.

Once I read what you posted here - that in real life Brian Bricker would have reported his copyrighted work being used without his permission - that whole piece of this game makes extraordinary sense! While I did not support that aspect at the time, I don't really know that you had another option as to a way to work around it. . . . Well, especially when I think about the fact that you also had real life hackers that may have intended to use other aspects of the game that also belonged to you, as the creator.

Thank you for a very intense and interesting game and for carrying it through, even though you had a lot of things to struggle against.

I have to ask though - did the artist in San Francisco that Arlen Rage was following on Twitter, and who's website revealed a phone number, know she was part of I'm Sorry? Ever since that night said to myself "What the hell, I have a number..." and called her, I have wondered if that woman had any idea she was mentioned in an ARG at all. LOL

Re: True life and art

BlackandBlue,

Thanks for the understanding and compliments now that it's done. It was tough when you became frustrated and all but stopped participating - there was just no way for me to explain the entire situation while the game was still rolling along!

Also, I did get some contact from the conspiracy theory crowd (such as Dreamsend) but it was very obvious that even he thought that I was Matheny.

That's great! Actually Rage only followed those who followed him. So whoever you called was not part of my game. I hope it didn't go badly!

RL and ARGs

You had one heck of a virgin tour as a PM. Shocked That Portland trip had to be frakking surreal, especially if this is your first time as Puppet Master and you get thrown into a mosh pit of irate ARGers, on top of corporate espionage.

I lurked a lot to try to keep up with the story, after the first kerfluffle settled itself and the uF mods put the string back. I get over things easily. Wink Unfortunately, my real life kicked into overdrive right at the end of July and pretty much up until today, and I missed a LOT of the story during that period, trying to catch a read about every 10 days or so. (as you may have guessed, I'm a publicist by trade, so clients set my schedule. . . ) The ending I missed entirely, so without the dedication of Classi, Schwinn, munki and Ryoko with transcripts and your final pages, I'd have been truly lost.

Well, the call was strange, but how could it not be since I basically posited it as a welfare check on a complete stranger by a vague and mysterious private investigation group I was a part of. . . .

She's in SF, so having a total stranger call her at 10:30pm to say something bizarre like, "uhm my associates and I noticed that a suspect of interest in a case we are working on has been following you on Twitter. . . .", probably didn't faze her much. My hubby is from SF and he's told much stranger stories from his real life. LOL

If you're ever down in LA, hit me up at the shesherre email, because I'd love to buy you a drink! If you're not opposed to *cough* adult alternate forms of entertainment *cough* maybe we can hit a party, if there's something shaking.
