Ah, I see. But how did you figure out the key?

Simon Singh's tutorial is a good place to start.
http://www.simonsingh.net/The_Black_Chamber/vigenere_cracking.html

There are a few tools on the net that can automatically find the key with messages this long:
http://www.triplesix.co.uk/guessvigenere.html
http://smurfoncrack.com/pygenere/
http://cs.colgate.edu/faculty/nevison/Core139Web/tools/vigenere-cracker.html

among others.

As for finding a key length, this one made that really easy. Consider the paragraph starting:
Quote:
M'dp xcrrb hsyk M'dp dyzh wy dcmizlw mtgidtmew, qq jmlv

We know it's not a simple substitution becqause of the "qq" bit.

The repeated "M'dp" part just screams that it's a key length of 12 or one of it's factors. Trial and error with the few words that fit the pattern gets things rolling pretty fast. ("I've", "I'ts", "I'll", etc.)

THis is what I got.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
well, my friends, the day has finally come. i knew that one day i'd be leaving the blog community and while it has been creeping closer and closer to the inevitable end i have to admit i'm a little sad.

i've meant what i've said on several occasions, if your posts appear on the right side of the screen it means i'm interested in reading what you have to say and hopefully having some conversation on it, whatever it may be. so my departure has nothing to do with getting tired of interacting with any of you, quite the contrary. i've really enjoyed my time here. so why am i packing up my bags?

because i've lost my passion for everything i discuss on here: games, music, movies, politics, sex with robots … okay maybe i'll never lose my passion for sex with robots but the point stands. lately i've been more focused on the nuts-and-bolts stuff in life: work, kids, eating, mortgage, etc.. my psychology professor would probably say something profound about maslowe's hierarchy of needs but i'm not a psychology professor or very profound. lately i've felt more like just another shlub trying to feed his family.

which also means laying to rest one duncan reilly. while duncan has been a fun mouthpiece through which to pontificate on matters great and small i'm afraid i've also lost interest in playing him. true, there's far more real than fictional about duncan, but he still isn't me. and ultimately this has never been my blog, it's been duncan's. a face to meet the faces that i meet (ten points if you get that reference) is a time-consuming luxury that i just can't afford right now.

but he will be on life support in facebook, if you're so inclined. i can't kill him off there because that's where i play mafia wars and i just can't give that up yet. feel free to keep in touch with me through there, if you're so inclined. i listed duncan as being in tampa, florida.

oh, and why did i put my last post in the form of a vigenere cipher? because the one thing that i've enjoyed the most here were the times we challenged each other to really think about something. i thought for my farewell i'd take one last stab at making you all think .

best of luck to all of you, it's been great fun.
