I wonder how many of the followers of Junko Junsui have been asked to spout slogans and empty statements. Are they 'in character'?

I hope so, because the number of people who posted 'kill the defilers' was disturbing! Yes, it's a game, but it reminds me of both the Stanford prison experiment and Milgram's obedience experiment. Shocked </gloom>

BTW, where have our puzzles gone? It does seem like ages! Smile

The Stanford Prison Experiment was conducted by Philip Zimbardo. Basically he gathered up volunteers and, after screening them to make sure they weren't psychopathic, created a realistic prison environment where participants were randomly assigned roles as either guards or prisoners. He did this so as to test how seemingly normal individuals could have their behaviour altered by being in bad situations or otherwise "why good people do bad things." Not only were the guards consistently abusive, but they used many of the tactics real guards in prisons use. Zimbardo actually had to end the experiment after only half the intended timeframe because the guards were beating and harassing the prisoners and one of the prisoners tried to lead a revolt. Even he failed to act until his girlfriend told him that he was being immoral by letting the experiment continue. Zimbardo interprets the results to mean that if you put an ordinary sane person in a situation where they can and are expected to do bad things, they will regardless of who they are. This is debatable, though.

Also: if you find this as interesting as I do, look up "the lucifer effect."

Stanford Experiment

In a nutshell, the professor had the subjects take slips of paper out of a hat that said either "Guard" or "Prisoner" and that was to be their role for 2 weeks. It ended in under a week, because the subjects had gone too far with their roles (i.e. some of the guards became brutal with their harrassments, riots, etc). Essentially the subjects internalized their roles a bit too much. Follow the link for more details.
