ARG Research Questionnaire (5 mins)
Help with a student university dissertation

Hi my name is Oliver Wade and I am a Marketing and Advertising student from the University of Leeds in the UK. I have been interested in Alternate Reality Games since I heard about The Lost Experience in 2006 and I have chosen to do my dissertation as a research project on them. I would really appreciate it if anyone who has played an ARG could please take some time to fill out a questionnaire. I would be really grateful to anyone who can help me with this.
All the information given on these questionnaires will be kept confidential, and only used for the purpose of this research.
I have posted a link to the questionnaire here at www.survey.leeds.ac.uk/args it should only take 5-10 minutes to complete. If you have any problems just PM me, message me here on this post or e-mail me at [phl5ow@leeds.ac.uk], though I am on UK time.

Many Thanks
Oliver Wade

Interesting questions. I didn't understand the matrix in question 12 at all, though - does it mean ARGs in general, or one specific ARG, or what? If it's "in general," that's a little like asking "How believable/expert are movies?" It depends on the movie! Smile

Yeah, I gotta agree with addlepated. I answered the straight down the middle for all of those because I had no idea what I was rating it on. You asked for "How X is the ARG" and I had no idea which ARG I was supposed to base my answer on. I figured they probably all average out to average - so I went with that Wink

Thanks addlepated and imbri, I completely agree with you for this question, unfortunately for my dissertation, I had to use questions taken from other people's research that was not specific to ARGs. It hasn't really fit very well. In the other studies it was meant 'in general' just focusing on the type of media, , but this is useful for me to write about as well so thanks for the comment.
Also thanks for doing the questionnaire, with any luck if I can study this for a phD I will be able to improve on this.

Thanks again
Olly

Hi again, can i just make a quick plea for everyone to please fill in this questionnaire if they can. I promise it will only take 5 minutes and I am desperate for respondents for my research, so if you can spare the time please, please give it a go.
Also if you are having trouble with those final questions then just put down your intuitions on what you think the questions mean, they are supposed to be descrbing ARGs as a type of media, compared to other types such as newspapers, TV, blogs etc. but all answers will be useful to me at least in knowing how to improve the questionnaire.

Finally thanks to everyone who has already completed the questionnaire and everyone who will. I am very grateful Very Happy
Olly

Filled it out

I took question 12 to mean "how important is it that an ARG is _________". That way I was able to answer the questions with very different ratings. Hope its helpful to your research!

Thanks Tstrel, and everyone else who has completed my questionnaire so far,

Just a post to say this questionnaire is still active and needs more responses so I am still very keen to hear the viewpoints of other players, no matter what their experience, for this research

I know some people have had trouble with a few of the questions asked, I'm sorry about this but I cannot change the questionnaire now so If you are thinking of filling it out please do so, and just go with what you think the question could (or should) be asking. Whether this is using one ARG as an example from your own experience or your perception of ARGs as a general media source or other interpretations. From the feedback I have been getting I should be able to analyse the results correctly so that even if the question may not prove what I hope, it will still give relevant information about ARGs.

Thanks again to everyone who has and will give up their time for this. I am very grateful, and If you ever need any help from the north of England with any ARGs I would be more than happy to help.

Many Thanks
Oliver Wade

Hey Ollie, great questionnaire. I answered the matrix section as a generic about ARGs in general.

Good luck on the career path, too. I've been working in marketing for a long time (Ten years, technically) and every day is more rewarding than the last. I'm still undecided on whether I like ARGs as a promotional tool though...

Questionnaire Closed

Thanks Kandiman, It's good to hear from someone doing marketing. I also was pretty unsure whether ARGs really should be used for promotional purposes. But I guess that was one of the things I wanted to find out. Thanks loads for doing the questionnaire.

The questionnaire is now closed I'm afraid, since I need to be able to go over all my results for the next few weeks. Hopefully it should show some interesting results. I want to thank everyone who took part again. I'm really grateful you've been so much help. Thanks a million everyone.

Thankyou Very Happy
Oliver Wade

I would have thought that it would be a poor method of "mass" advertising unless there is something about the audience that would make it ideal for ARG (eg ARGFest), but I would have thought that big commercial endeavours, would be looking at audiences in the thousands...

I think if you tie in products with an established franchise that has a large, existing fan base, it does work. But otherwise it's not a great idea. An example of this world be The Lost Experience. Being based on Lost, it was always going to be huge and therefore was the idea vehicle onto which advertisers such as Sprite, Jeep and Verizon could attach themselves.

You couldn't achieve the same with a game like Purity Towers, nor with a game based on certain franchises. Attaching sponsors to a game based on Firefly/Serenity would be easy, because of the popularity of those franchises, but it wouldn't make sense to the game and would ultimately fail.

Hi again everyone, thanks so much for your help for my dissertation, it's been really appreciated. I've learnt that my tutor at university is hoping to turn this research into a publishable article, this would be a really good opportunity to contribute to the research of ARGs and help understand them a bit better, so i've re-opened the questionnaire in the hope that we can get more respondents.
Unfortunately we don't have enough respondents at the moment for validity in a proper academic article, so if you haven't already done the questionnaire please do! The address is the same www.survey.leeds.ac.uk/args and it is the same questionnaire so it should only take a few minutes. please help us out if you can.

Many thanks again
Oliver Wade
