Thank you for your email. Coincidentally, we have actually received several inquiries regarding The Dark Chapter within the past few days. This sudden interest in our past productions is wonderful, but I am sorry that everyone seems to want a film that is no longer available.

Unfortunately we do not know much about the history of this movie. We know that it was lost, but we do not know why the studio let this happen, nor why the film never made it into the bootleg circuit. This appears to be just one of those strange flukes that fell through the cracks of analog distribution before digital media took over.

Since there has been so much interest, I am going to redouble our efforts here to find out some solid information on the film. I will get in touch with old studio executives, collectors, and some of the warehouses where these films were stored to see if I can generate any solid leads.

I am not sure how long this will take, but I will be in touch within the next day or two with an update on our progress.

Thank you again for your interest in our studio. I hope that we will be able to help with your research.

Okay, here is what I've got from her now...and remember, I've not put myself out there as a doting fan. In order to gain her trust, I've portrayed myself as someone else who is aging and interested in finding a "cure" for it, as well. When asked about methods outside of science and in the realm of sympathetic magic, I've indicated interest and experience. So here is what she asks now:

Quote:
Do you believe it is possible for a "soul" trapped inside an image to be reconstituted into a physical form?

I'm so interested to find out where this conversation is going....

I think I've now found the importance of The Dark Chapter to Evelyn, and it seems to relate back to the relationship she and I have established regarding the quest for eternal youth. Here is my latest message from her:

EvelynCrane If photographs trap pieces of the human soul, would it be possible to repair oneself by using these preserved fragments?

I told her that yes, it could be possible. Then I asked if this had anything to do with the renewed search for The Dark Chapter...because the same concept should work with film as well. Wouldn't it be interesting if she has one of the missing copies and is holding onto it just for this purpose?

She must sense that everyone else has given up or lost interest. Last night's message to me was public:

Quote:
EvelynCrane @sheridan43 In regards to our recent conversation, I have secured a projector from the Palace Theater for testing.

My response back:

Quote:
@EvelynCrane Excellent. So you have the film I mentioned, then?

While Evelyn has the Palace Theater projector it appears she does not have the Dark Chapter film.

@amandel77 I assume you are referring to an original print. Strange how this film has inspired my research again.I would be very interested.

A "Maynard Greaves" might though. Have photoshopped under the attached Jpeg's inkblot to pick up addn'l info with no joy.

Dear Amandel,

Good news! We have found evidence that a copy of "The Dark Chapter" still exists. Apparently there was a copy tucked away in the Palace Theater storage room until 1994, when the reel was sold at an auction.

Unfortunately that's where we have hit a brick wall. As you can see, the auction slip is damaged. We tried to follow up with the auctioneer for more information, but he died a few years ago.

Rest assured that this is not the end. Just knowing that the film exists is a huge step! Fan support is now more important than ever. Together, I am sure that we will be able to find this important piece of Silver Crypt history.

I have attached a copy of the receipt for your records.

Ditto. Since Maynard Greaves is the deceased auctioneer maybe someone will have better photoshop luck under the ink.

Universal website

I found something possibly useful on the Universal Horror nights website, in an exibit of the theatre's history.

Police reported that a wedding day ceremony had turned tragic when a groom found himself alone in a local chapel and his bride-to-be was reported missing. Police admitted to being slow to respond, assuming last minute jitters might have given the young woman second thoughts. But there was not to be a 'happily ever-after' ending.

The woman's body was discovered inside the Universal Palace Theater on the morning after the premiere of a recent remake of a famous horror story horror film that was hailed as "setting a new standard" in the genre.

Apparently obsessed with the film's central theme, she was discovered lifeless, having suffered from a fatal loss of blood. Still dressed in a flowing white gown, her pale white body was found behind the seats in the last row of the balcony, still clutching a bouquet of wilted roses.

Several patrons later recalled hearing a woman's voice coming from the balcony area as "someone reciting lines of dialogue word-for-word" during the film. In spite of the fact that no traces of blood were found around the body, authorities officially ruled the cause of death "unknown" primarily because no specific explanation was offered as to how she suffered such an awful death.

One of the artifacts linked to this death was a bouquet of roses, of which the web site says:
Bouquet of roses found in the hands of the corpse. Defying explanation, the flowers seem to be "frozen in time" as absolutely no sign of decomposition has been observed since their discovery.

The movie playing, however, was not one from Silver Crypt: instead it was a film titled "The Calling". - Jett

I think that was just the substory they had when they were trying to make people guess what movie was going to be showing. That was later concluded to mean there was a vampire movie playiung.. not sure which one exactly though

Very interesting.. But the receipt is dated 1994.. so why does it look like it's from 1894?? Who uses sloppy ink pens anymore??

I've had a bit of correspondence with Crane. First, I posted a comment to her blog about Barthory:

Quote:

Sadly, Barthory lived in an era before blood types were known. The frequent total transfusions that would have been required to affect a significant change would surely have killed her, and would have merely prolonged her youth by a few decades at most. But there are other methods. - Jett

And had the following exchange of direct messages from twitter:

Quote:

Have you sought the Alkahest? - Jett

E.C. The philosopher's stone? I do not believe it is more than a fable. An associate of mine is convinced otherwise, but I have seen no evidence.

The Alkahest is not a substance so much as a process. You are, I'm sure, familiar with "The Picture of Dorian Grey"? - Jett
And perhaps you would be more correct to say, "The projector alone is insufficient to produce the phenomenon." -Jett

E.C. You appear to have some insight into this. Tell me, what do you suggest is missing from the equation?

There are five senses, and five elements; to complete a transformation, I suggest a correspondence for each.
The projector should do for sight/fire, but have you considered the others? And what is the driving force behind your working? - Jett

Of course, I'm making this up as I go along. Any and all ideas will be appreciated, if not downright cherished.

Another exchange

E. C. I now believe that I was concentrating in the wrong area. However, alchemy may be necessary to perfect and refine the process.

It may indeed be of use. What do you have in mind, if I may be so bold as to ask? - Jett
