[META] Prepare a "Letter of Intent"

*edit* People have been asking me about this so I'm bumping the thread. I haven't had time to update this. So take one of the two versions below and alter it as you see fit. I'll write a new version and post it later tonight. I just don't have time right now... Sorry. Razz *Edit*

I used to do similar things to this quite a lot a few years back, and during those adventures I was introduced to the concept of a "Letter of Intent".

The basic idea is that, before you go to your event/rally point/coords/whatever, you write and print out several copies of a (business) letter addressed to whatever poor shmuck (jogger, security guard, policeman...) happens to stumble upon your event and catches you acting goofy/suspicious... The idea is to give a concise explanation about who you are and why you're there, then you sign it with your real name.

When the person/security/cop asks you who you are and what you think you're doing, you explain that you're involved with a nation-wide scavenger hunt and puzzle solving game called "I Love Bees". You then present them with your Letter of Intent, explaining that all of the details of who you are and what you're doing are in that document. They can then either read it, or you can explain yourself, but the letter is theirs to take with them if they wish.

This is all very Official seeming, and it tends to help put people at ease. Not only do they now know as much about what you're doing as you do, but they also have a neatly printed and signed document with all the details and they don't have to worry about remembering what the short-hand scribbles on that stupid little pad says.

I'm going to write my Letter of Intent right now, I'll post it when I'm done if anybody would like to use it.

Does anybody else do this? What does it say in your letter of intent?

Sounds like a good idea to me. I'll check what you write and add it to my kit bag. Can't hurt to have it (I feel the Boy Scout trainging coming back).

Here it is...
It might also be a good idea to print out a couple of copies of gkscotty's open letter to Halo fans as well. That way, if the person wants more information about the game... You could just whip that out as well.

To whom it may concern,

Hello, my name is ________________________, and this is a "Letter of Intent" to let you know why I'm here. I could be here by myself, or there may be other people with me, but we're not here to cause any trouble.

I'm at this location as part of a nation-wide scavenger hunt and puzzle solving game called "I Love Bees". The basic premise of the game being that hidden clues and puzzles are posted on various message boards and websites on the Internet by a person or persons. Groups of people on the Internet then coordinate, share information about these clues, and try to solve the mystery.

In this case, the website was "ilovebees.com", part of which recently posted a list of almost 200 GPS coordinates across the continental US along with times for each location. (http://ilovebees.links.html) To be honest, none of the people who are participating in ilovebees, including myself, really knows what we are supposed to do while we're at our designated locations. All I really know is that the people running the game wanted myself and other players in this area to be on this spot, ______________________ , at __:__, on Aug. 24, 2004.

So if you're wondering why I am here... Well... So am I.

The clues given thus far seem to indicate that the ilovebees game is being run by people from a company called "Bungie" (which is owned by Microsoft) who enjoy these types of games. (The players knew to go to the I Love Bees website for clues because the address was flashed at the end of a promotional movie about an upcoming product being developed by Bungie.) It is speculated among the players that the people responsible for ilovebees.com are running the game as part of an advertising campaign to generate buzz about their product, and indulge in a favorite pastime all at once. It would not be the first time they have done so.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me, I'll answer them as best I can. If this location is your place of buisness, and you have any rules, requests, or concerns, please let me know and I'll try to see to it that I, and the other players that might be with me at this location, respect them.

Thank you for your time,

Sounds solid.

With this kinda thread, I would personally stress that if Law Enforcement Of Any Kind wants you to leave, remember that a game like this prolly ain't worth getting slapped with some arrest or something over.

I know, odds are it ain't gonna happen, but my first reaction to the thread was "what if a guard doesn't give a shit about the letter and demands you leave anyways".

Then you ask (politely, of course) to see his superior officer and present him with a copy of your Letter of Intent.

And if the superior okays it and the rentacop still hassles you, you first remind him (again, very politely) that his superior officer okayed it and ask him (politely) to leave you alone.

If he continues hassling you, report him to said superior officer for harassment.

And if all else fails, call the real cops and have him arrested - harrassment's a crime.

Granted, it probably won't come to that, but that's just my $0.02 on the situation.

Updated...

In this case, the website was "ilovebees.com", part of which recently posted a list of almost 200 GPS coordinates across the continental US along with times for each location. (http://ilovebees.com/links.html and http://ilovebees.com/recipe3.html) These coordinates all match up to payphones. We go to the spot, trying to find payphones that will take incoming calls, and wait for the people running the game to call us at a certain time. If we're at the right phone, they'll call and ask us a riddle. If we answer correctly, a sound file listed with our coordinates will be unlocked on the website, and we'll learn more about the mystery.

You're probably wondering who's running this game... Well, so are we. That's part of the mystery quite frankly. The clues given thus far seem to indicate that the ilovebees game is being run by people from a company called "Bungie" (which is owned by Microsoft) who enjoy these types of games. (The players knew to go to the I Love Bees website for clues because the address was flashed at the end of a promotional movie about an upcoming product being developed by Bungie.) Due to the fact that it's still relevant. A letter of intent is actually a really good idea. Although this should be locked and stickied in my opinion.
