[Trailhead]Third Realm

Got a tip from prophetSPLATthirdrealm.org that Third Realm is now playing. Prophetic indeed, since I didn't see any results for thirdrealm.org in UF.

Well, thirdrealm.org is certainly bizarre...

Three bowls and an apocalypse countdown, with these instructions:
Quote:
Clear, Water, Murky are the bowls above.
Clear, Water, Murky are your visions as you scrye them hence, as you touch the bowls.
The voice, from the wilderness, is it in your head?
Does it matter?

Clicking the bowls changes the bottom of the page, to an image of a singing bowl and a quote. The top of the page contains only one image and one link, so clicking on individual bowls up there is not going to make a difference:
Code:
<a><img src="img/tibetan_bowls.jpg" alt="Bowls are for seeing" width="550" height="152"></a>

Sometimes the singing bowl in the bottom part has alt text, but not always. So far, I've gotten 'F' and 'The book is behind the bowl'.

For 'The book is behind the bowl', this is the quote I got, with it:
Quote:
Then I looked, and behold, a likeness as the appearance of a man; from His loins and downward there was the appearance of fire, and from His loins and upward the appearance of brightness, like the appearance of glowing metal.
He stretched out the form of a hand and caught me by a lock of my head; and the Spirit lifted me up between earth and heaven and brought me in the visions of God to Jerusalem, to the entrance of the north gate of the inner court, where the seat of the idol of jealousy, which provokes to jealousy, was located.

The source reveals no image map or other links in the bottom section, for that alt text, but I'm going to list the image tag here, because it's different from the other instances of the bowl that I've seen.

Code:
<img src="../img/antique-tibetan-singing-bowl.jpg" title="The Book is behind the bowl" alt="The Book is behind the bowl" width="144" height="117">

Also, because sometimes I have a brain, I thought to check the source when the bottom section failed to load. Apparently there are 64 possible instances for that section: content/1.html through content/64.html. It appears that 63 is the one that gives it trouble.

And if I load 63 independently, it gives this bowl:
Code:
<img src="../img/antique-tibetan-singing-bowl.jpg" width="144" height="117">

and this quote:
Quote:
TEOTWAWKI

and the title is "Murky".

So, the singing bowls I've pulled out are:
Code:
<img src="../img/Singing_Bowl.jpg" alt="" width="144" height="117">
<img src="../img/antique-tibetan-singing-bowl.jpg" width="144" height="117">

And the possible page titles are: "Clear" and "Murky", which matches up with the text on the top part of the page, but I haven't yet found an instance with "Water" as a title.

Currently paging through each content page, looking for alt text.
Code:
5:  h
7:  T
11: F
13: E
17: The Book is behind the bowl

[At 24, page title changes to Murky and bowl image changes from Singing_Bowl.jpg to antique-tibetan-singing-bowl.jpg]
Code:
42: u
47: The Book is behind the bowl
48: The Book is behind the bowl
49: The Book is behind the bowl
50: The Book is behind the bowl

Guessing for a moment that "The Book is behind the bowl" might refer to something in the path, I backed up to the img directory.

Code:
[DIR] Parent Directory                             -
[IMG] BG1bw.jpg               06-Oct-2009 23:02   68K
[IMG] King in Yellow.gif      10-Oct-2009 17:36  231K
[IMG] Singing_Bowl.jpg        06-Oct-2009 15:48   62K
[IMG] antique-tibetan-sing..> 07-Oct-2009 00:11   56K
[IMG] grade-e-chakra-tibet..> 06-Oct-2009 15:48   33K
[IMG] tibetan_bowls.jpg       06-Oct-2009 15:48  8.5K

Of these, only BG1bw and King in Yellow are not bowls. BG1 is the top section background, and King does not display at all: "The image "http://thirdrealm.org/img/King%20in%20Yellow.gif" cannot be displayed, because it contains errors."

I believe I have been through every page now. The pages appear to be generated at random. Everything is regarding Apocalypse.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
So far the letters FUTHE are found as the text for the singing bowls.

There are a couple of things hidden in the text of some pages.

http://twitter.com/thirdrealm

http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/8492

One of the pages on thirdrealm says "S.H.I.V.A. (Super Heuristic Invitro Virtual Anomoly)
The code to reproduce this language virus is as
follows:"

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I.H.V.H. (Interactive Homemade Viral Hologram) Is the answer

That quote and a lot of the other quotes on the site come from http://textfiles.vistech.net/etext/MODERN/last_book_project

IHVH and the other page on the site that has YHVH and other variants is referring to God. YHVH and the others are direct English translations of the Ancient Israelite term. English does not have the characters to accurately spell the word.

here again all letters (seems like the people before missed some). You can easily browse them like Mehetabel already did: http://thirdrealm.org/content/xx.html

xx = 1 .. 59

Title from 1 -23: Clear
Title from 24-59: Murky

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

5: h
7: T
11: F
13: E
15: L
42: u
61: E

maybe an anagram, but it resolved in nothing useful for me.

On the subject of the King, anybody feel like pulling all the references to a King in the content pages? Perhaps it's a legitimate file with the wrong extension, and there may be some clues... It's not txt, I can tell you that.

I have to go out for a while, just thought I'd drop that before I disappear.

[=EDIT=] A zip file called "King+in+Yellow.gif.zip" exists in the directory "thirdrealm.org/book/". The book is, in fact, behind the bowl. In fact, there's a whole other page, there, with the image of the King in Yellow (alt="Book"), and a Roman bust (alt="3") with the letters "D F G H Q O" under it.

'Scuse me while I go open this thing. [...] Contains a viewable gif of the King in Yellow, which is now attached, and is also the same one seen on the page.

However, the zip file (79K) and the image (80.6K) are both smaller than the original gif (230K), so I'm gonna keep poking it with a stick. Also, the PM is using a Macintosh, according to the zip contents, so whatever the other thing is, it might be some Mac-only format, like .bin.hex or some bizarre thing.

Things the gif from the img directory is not: txt, asc, zip, rar, gz, tgz, tar, gif, bmp, jpg, pic, png, pnt, pdf, doc, lit, exe, jar

Not sure if it helps, but here's some info on a collection of short stories called "The King in Yellow": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_in_Yellow

The King in Yellow also has some Lovecraft connections (also mentioned on that page).

Yeah, that's totally related. The symbol on the King's chair, in the picture, is the Yellow Sign. And from that page on the Yellow Sign, I'd particularly like to point out this snippet from the Literature references:
Quote:
In Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson's Illuminatus! trilogy, the Cult of the Yellow Sign is offered to one detective as a concocted explanation of human history. The cult supposedly worships cthulhoid entities known as lloigor, commits human sacrifice, and has striven throughout history to suppress rationalism. The cult is opposed by the rationalist Illuminati.

Not sure if this is actually relevant, but it sure looks good.

Also got some random, but useless inspiration. Ran the "D F G H Q O" under the bust through ROT3 (aka the Caesar Cipher, cause, y'know, Roman bust, alt text 3...) and got the equally non-useful "g i j k t r". Nor does it appear to be the Caesar Box Cipher in three columns: "d g q f h o". Nor does running it through one and then the other help: "g k i t j r" or "g j t i k r".

[=EDIT=] Just got in on the protected Twitter!

The place is very real and apparently fairly popular. Not entirely certain what, if anything, we're supposed to gather from this.‎

Thank you for posting this. I had started my own spreadsheet, got thru about half of the pages and had to quit for the night. When I returned to the site this morning, I found that the 'content' directory had been purged of all 64 pages! Very annoying. One thing I was keeping track was the inconsistent usage of both the 'alt' and 'title' properties on the image tag -- for example, content/5.html had alt="H" and title="h"; your chart didn't carry that level of detail. Also, at least 3 pages that I did get to view had white-on-white hidden text (The Book is Behind the Bowl), which your file doesn't document.

But of course, now it's all moot, just random time filler, perhaps. Oh well.

thirdrealm: Why does no one speak to me? Alas, I am alone and lost in this realm of in between.
AUZ505: @thirdrealm I am also lost ... but I will speak to you
thirdrealm: @AUZ505 The bowl is a bell sometimes. The book is read by night. What brings the light? What feeds it?

No idea what he meant. Dunno

UPDATE:
Quote:

AUZ505 @thirdrealm the sun brings light
thirdrealm @AUZ505 By night? perhaps you are correct if the moon is out.

so we have "moon", I guess.

For those folks who missed out on the content pages, I backed them up, like an obsessive compulsive individual. Zip file with /content/ and /img/ attached, if anyone wants to pull out some data I missed.

Also, stars and candles bring light... wait ... bell, book, and candle... this sounds familiar. *runs off*

[=EDIT=] Bell, Book, and Candle: a 1958 romantic comedy, a German band, a method of excommunication. I'm seeing the third as being appropriately contexted for some of what we've seen, so far.

Sent: @thirdrealm If the bowl is a bell, then the light is a candle, is it not? less than 5 seconds ago

[=EDIT 2=] Oh, what? Is that the sound of a win? I think it is:
thirdrealm @penbrydd It is. Also, the King is in his lair,so one must read by night, by the light of the candle, since the King has become trapped.2 minutes ago from TweetDeck in reply to penbrydd

It seems that the site's been changed and "The King in Yellow" is now on the home page. The page title has also been changed to "I mourn" andthe quote is "Some of these things were random, chosen for their qualities, not their resonance. In my universe, naught but random is." It seems that the timer is counting down to November 2nd 12:00 AM EST.

I haven't figured out any significance in the fact, but in the twitter post "Burroughs noticed a number. Did you?" I'm pretty certain that he's referring to William S. Burroughs, who was the first person to notice the "23 enigma."

Candle

no spoiler since I am not sure if this is really a solve:

D F G H Q O:

if you use rot3 not as decoding but encoding (which is the same as rot23 for decoding) this resolves to:

A C D E N L

which is a anagram for

C A N D L E

so candle might be the light like Mehetabel said. But what to do with this?

EDIT: From the sourcecode of the new start page:
http://thirdrealm.org/media/bowl.wav.
Nothing special about it from my point of view. No more content in the media folder.

Oh, damn, I totally missed that. That makes perfect sense...

Okay, so we found the book, we found the candle, now we need to find the bell, I'm guessing. The bowl.wav sounds like the same noise the old index page made, but I didn't think to save it, so I could check...

Potentially important snippets of the code:
Code:
<title>I mourn</title>
<img src="/book/King+in+Yellow.gif" alt="I am" width="312" height="276" />
<embed src="media/bowl.wav" width="0" height="0" hidden="true" autostart="true" autoplay="0" volume="50">
TargetDate = "11/02/2009 12:00 AM";
<script language="JavaScript" src="http://scripts.hashemian.com/js/countdown.js">

That countdown is not hosted locally. Off to check that out. ... And the other site is unrelated. It's just a source for that and a few other nifty scripts, and some guy's blog. It's been there since 2001.

A countdown to the apocalypse that ends on November 2 is a wee bit odd, especially since he references the 12.21.2012 apocalypse in the content pages. Checking Wikipedia for November 2 yields:
Quote:
November 2 is the 306th day of the year (307th in leap years) in the Gregorian calendar. There are 59 days remaining until the end of the year.
# Catholicism and Anglicanism – All Souls Day
# Latin America – Day of the Dead (Spanish: El Dia de los Muertos), a celebration of dead ancestors.
# Ancient Latvia – Dveselu Diena held
# Brazil and Portugal – Dia de Finados (or Dia dos Fiéis Defuntos), a celebration of dead ancestors in the All Souls Day.

These are all festivals of the dead. In fact, celebrations on that date are almost exclusively festivals of the dead, with the odd ones out being political celebrations.
