Ok, so the coordinates were right.
Using "pakistan" as a password on east.gif reveals a new Alternates.txt :
a = 0142
o = 0164
And "veracruz" on west.gif gives us a new gif image, #.gif :

I can't really read what is written on #.gif, but it seems like musical notes to me :

Still on colours, here... I'm hoping this'll help somebody figure something out. I drew out the patterns I worked out, this morning. Probably useless, but it's what I've got.
