I mean, I don't believe in this theory personally, but if the Prank Theory Gone Wrong IS what happened, it wouldn't be hard to explain away any of the happenings in 16. Perhaps J's camera is the same one Alex used, and J neglected to tell us. Like, Alex was borrowing it for his thing, and accidentally broke it.

As for the apartment, if they had internet access there, they certainly would have known J was coming, and wouldn't want to be found, especially if Alex accidentally killed Brian as per the prank.

Simple.

Again, I don't think this theory is true in the least.

The prank theory gains some creditability in entry 13 but then looses it again in 14. Namely the spookiness of SM.

Entry 13 has Alex spotting SM twice, with a great distance between them. Meaning SM is real, supernatural and moves quickly, or there is more than one "SM", ie Brian\Tim\hoever screwing with him trying to make him think he's crazy. Further you could use tothearks' video to say that he's highlighting that J had time to "exit" the video and get changed into SM gear. Not to mention we never heard J's account of what happened when he got back with the battery. Obviously he would have come back to a very distraught Alex.

Entry 14 shows SM walking into Alex's room, and then Alex waking up and panning the camera to where SM should be standing with nothing showing up. Implying that SM entered the room and vanished without walking back out again. [Granted the video goes dark for 2 seconds where the video cuts and the actor leaves the room, but this part is OOG and just a way to edit the footage to show that no one is in the room.]
