Re: Apocalypso re-entry / power outage

Bear with, I haven't been up long. Very Happy

I'm currently reading The Fall of Reach and several times it is mentioned that slip space does not conform to the standard rules of relativity, also that it has odd temporal properties (an accident in slip space could be how Melissa gets sent here), but I don't recall mention of an EMP effect generated by normal SS jumps.

UNSC ships are still partially vulnerable to EMP, in a few fights ships systems are damaged when they are forced to resort to using nukes, this makes me think it unlikely any serious EMP effect would occur from SS travel, otherwise ships would emerge half damaged. This would make it very risky especially during war.

I wouldn't discount the possibility that the Apocalypso's emergance caused the black outs. SS to normal space jumps performed by humans do not occur within systems as they cannot calculate the exact point they will emerge. Perhaps, emerging so close to a planetary body (within lunar orbit) sends a form of shock/distortion wave out ahead of the ship as it re-enters normal space?

Edit so it looks like I have atleast heard of spelling and punctuation.

Odysseus

Going back to the speculation about the connections to Homer's epic poems, my Odyssey knowledge is a little rusty, but does anyone remember how Odysseus gets off Calypso's island, the place that entrapts him for the longest period of time on his way home from Troy (or even what the name of said island was)? And might it clue us in to how we can help Melissa get off ilovebees.com (since the site and Dana seem to be her island and Calypso) and on her way back to her proper time and place (I'm speculating that our possible ultimate goal is to get Melissa back - I would add to that "reunite her with her crew," but as it seems that for all intents and purposes we're her crew, that may not be necessary)? Should this even be going here? I'm not sure, but I'm posting it here because earlier in this thread the Odyssey stuff was brought up and made me think of what I've said.

Orouboros has an intriguing idea. Maybe normal ships don't disrupt the EM spectrum when re-entering normal space, at least not to that degree, but who knows what havoc an ONI spy yacht that has started using a Forerunner artifact to mess with the space-time continum might produce.

Speccing away, why would the Operator have these particular memories stored? Could she somehow have been picking up on all of these threads starting at the time of the disturbance, when her ship (if it is the Apocalypso) appeared within broadcast range? Actually I doubt this, but I do still think "Durga" was transmitted to Jersey's computer from the Operator's ship, courtesy of his father.

Also, as I read it, the evacuation of Troy was a BIG public amd military event. (Along with any other big Cov attacks, pretty hard to cover up.) This receipt does sound like a concoction to inquire on the whereabouts of Janet Adams, but it does seem to refer to a public event. Which means the Cov know it too, and as Capt. Greene reasoned, they must suspect their transmissions are being decrypted.

SecondSundodger,

Quick summary: Odysseus ends up on Calypso's island after she saves him from drowning in the wine-dark sea (Zeus hurled a thunderbolt at his ship). She falls in love with him and keeps him on the island. Eventually Hermes (the messenger god) appears to her and tells her that Zeus orders her to let him go home. So she helps build him a boat (in five days) and off he goes. Then she sits on her island mourning forever.

I have the prose translation in book format but I'm sure it's online somewhere. Try googling Odysseus + Calypso + Zeus? It seems fairly relevant, at least.

Do you suppose, then, that the purpose of this phone call is to begin shifting responsibility for the evacuation of Troy and the compromise of ONI's breaking of Covenant code onto the marines? Crotchety is adamant about correcting the woman on the phone that Lnc Cpl Adams was a marine and not a sailor.

[WILDSPEC] The power failure as the key

It's wildspec, I think, but i like the possibility. It leads me to my own wildspec, but follow for a moment.

It's my belief that playing Halo 2 will in no way require knowledge from this ARG. The audience for the game is too big, and Bungie would not want to limit sales in that way. Therefore, we can expect that this ARG aims to enhance the Halo universe in the same way that the books do--they provide more background, more story to flesh out a world we want to learn about, but is not directly involved with the game story.

[WILDSPEC]
I believe the power failure, which is so far the ONLY clear common denominator in the four separate story lines, to be not only the key to uniting the stories, but the key to the entire ARG. Though we clearly do not have the info yet, we need to figure out what caused the power failure, which then set into motions the events that are unfolding. From there, we would have information which would allow us to formulate a solution--you can fix a problem unless you know the cause.
[/WILDSPEC]

So the question is what the heck is going on here? The naval officer clearly is not actually a crotchety old man who was evacuated from Troy and has his family papers lost by a Marine named Lance Corporal Janet Adams. This is a ruse ... the naval officer was likely never on Troy shortly before the glassing. There may never have actually been an evacuation from Troy. Lance Corporal Janet Adams may never have been on Troy. Troy was most certainly glassed, though.

The problem I see here is that such events could be so easily confirmed or denied. The evac would clearly be a huge military operation. The location of a Lance Corporal could probably be easily tracked, unless she was working covertly - and if that was the case, she probably wouldn't be reported KIA ... or at all ...

I think we can assume that fake old man (assuming that is true, but it does seem a very logical way to listen to the story) is seeking on thing - information on Janet Adams.

Why he is and how it ties into Melissa/ILB .... (?)

Trout me if this has been covered, isn't there a reference to the Apocolypse on ILB. Something to the effect of after the Apocolypse or since it or soemthing....now we have a ship named the Apocolypso. Is it possible that this is her ship and that something went wrong when they came back. If we are to assume that all of the recordings are from after an evacuation of troy that took places 3 months before, that means Mellisa still had to be in the future at that point. How else could she have these recordings. What I'm saying is, what if that is her ship having some sort of problem and the poweroutage it creates begins a chain of events that cause her to eventually end up in the ILB's server.
I don't know how that happens, but I'm just speculating on this.

God I hate to be a kill joy, but maybe it's just the same or a similar VA and it's not supposed to be the same person.

It begins with the idea that the crotchety old man and the important naval officer that we hear briefly in goodbye.wav are in fact the same person. The way I hear this situation is that the officer is sitting in his office and conducting this chatter call when his subordinate knocks on the door and informs him of current events while he is waiting for the clerk on the other end of the chatter line to look up the current disposition of the unfortunate Lance Corporal Janet Adams.

The problem I have with this, is that the deep-voiced man (who may sound a little bit like the old man, though I don't think so) is the one who comes into the room, asking about the situation. You (obviously) don't see it in the transcripts, but you can hear it in the wav files pretty clearly.

It could just as easily be the old man asking for the update when he sees his assistant entering the room.

Covenant ships are also vulnerable to EMP, as Keyes proved when he took out a covie ship's shields with a nuke in The Fall of Reach. So their Slipstream drive doesn't create an EMP either. (Note that the covenant don't use the Shaw-Fujikawa slipspace generators).

And Cortana, using the increased resolution of the Covenant slipstream matrices, could make Slipspace jumps closer to gravitational fields than other human vessels. The only reason that humans and/or covenant have not done this in the past was because they didn't think it could be done. (The Covenant had never been told it could be done, and, as they are an imitative, not an intuitative race, they never tried.) It was difficult for Cortana to do:
Quote:
True, manipulating eighty-eight stochastic variables in eleven-dimensional space-time was not child's play ... but it was possible that the other AI would have been able to follow her calculations.
Perhaps not. The Covenant were imitative, not innovative.

Hope this clears some things up.

1) On a re-listen, I think maybe the military officer here is merely searching the voice archives. Which is why he's able to put the recording on pause (first beep) when he sees his subordinate approaching, just before they knock to come in, and then restart it again (second beep) after getting his update.

To be able to pause after "one moment please" and restart, in realtime, you'd have to be faking the Secretary voice, not the Grumpy Old Man. And we are told the conversation is being archived and forwarded.

Spec he's searching for either info on Troy, his Grandpa, or Janet Adams?

2) The ours/theirs spec on the CO's relief is valid but maybe there's more to it. It may be a bit more than relief, after listening to it again.

Scruffy at LivingLightning, in the blog wrote:
Also interesting to note is the CO's reaction upon learning the name of the ship. It's a real surprise to him, or a cause for some concern.

This is intriguing, too. Especially if the Apocalypso has some sort of reputation. If it's Melissa's timetravelling stealth ship I spec on above, with a reputation gained in the months since the Artifact powered up, it could well be Halo's equivalent of the Flying Dutchman.

I like that take on it. The only thing that feels wrong to me about it is that the pauses before the knock, but it still sounds pretty plausible.

It really sounds to me like the deep voice guy is talking to the lady on the chatter system
gets put on hold... "beep beep"
he knocks on the other man's door, opens it
asks, "any data yet"
stops talking when the phone opperator comes back from having him on hold... "beep beep"
then finishes their conversation.

We hear a different "beep beep" at the end showing that the call has ended.
Just my 2 cents
