I figured the grid ref after I turned off the pootle last night
I'd been looking up the Birmingham museum and the grid ref had been staring me in the face, it was only as the pootle logged off I was like OMG thats it and I could not be bothered to fire it up again.

great work guys and girls on working out the river. I think the thing found with the hoard is

the inscription on the gold band. Surge domine et dissipentur inimici tui et fugiant qui oderunt te a facie tua ~ "Rise up, o Lord, and may thy enemies be dispersed and those who hate thee be driven from thy face"

I like where brownolwl23 is going with this. When I first started looking through the BM&AG site, I noticed the Treasure Valuation Committee will decide if the Crown gets to keep the Hoard or if the Hoard will be kept in the West Midlands as BM&AG, the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery, Stoke-on-Trent, and Staffordshire County Council are hoping. I also found a story about it here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/stoke/content/articles/2009/09/24/anglo_saxon_gold_feature.shtml. I thought perhaps Flynn became involved in this "fight" for rights to the Hoard. I sent an email to Darcy pondering this but have not heard back.
However, upon revisiting posts here I have found the following information about brownowl23's gold band (I don't know that it really is a spoiler but I'll treat it as such to be nice):

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
... the inscribed gold strip with its quotation either from Numbers 10.35 (or from the passage's recycling in the Psalms). I interpret that strip as the arm of a cross which had a terminal at one end with a round cabochon jewel; the other end (with its sharp but slightly curved edge) would have fitted into the central circular (jewelled) fitting of the cross. It will be important to read the inscription on the reverse, which seems to be upside down in relation to the inscription on the face and to be either more worn (? because next to the wearer's clothing) or not to have been nielloed. (http://www.staffordshirehoard.org.uk/commentary/ paragraph 4)

The possible multiple pieces of an artifact that must be put back together to work seems awfully familiar to me...

This is bad... this is really, really bad

OK, so, if you've seen my blog you'll know by now that I made a trip to Birmingham this morning. Well, I hate to say it, but things aren't quite as rosy as I made out on there.

See, I went to the fountain, like you said to. And there were loads of people sitting around... and then I saw it. This little notebook, from the museum, just... sat on the side of the fountain, above one of the letters of the inscription. I flipped it open, and on the second page there's this writing... it says "the merchandise is contained within" and I recognised the writing... it's the same as on the clue that Flynn had to get here. Underneath that, a few pages down... there was a memory stick. Like, buried into the notebook.

There is NO WAY that Flynn would have left that there. None at all. And he must have solved that clue that you all did... so... all I can think is that he turned up to get this clue and... someone's had him. Kidnapped him... I don't know. But there's no way he would have just left that book.

I took it, slipped it into my pocket, and made a run for it. I'm hiding in a coffee shop now, just staring at this memory stick... when I get somewhere safe I'll send you the contents. I don't even know what's on it, I haven't dared to look. They could be following me for all I know.

Anyway, all I know now is this... I can't tell Charlene that I failed in my one stupid job; protect Flynn. There's only one thing for it; we're going to have to keep following these clues, one to the next, until we find whatever it is that everyone is after. And, hopefully, Flynn.

My phone camera is being decidedly slow at uploading any pictures, so I've attached the only one I've got at the moment. At least you can see what the notebook looks like. I'll send you the picture of the writing inside and the files from the memory stick as soon as I can.

Meanwhile, I'm going to head to Stoke. Don't see what else I can do... I have to keep following this trail. Let's see if I find anything there. Hopefully it won't be more trouble...

Hopefully yours,
Darcy

Been busy for the past few days so I have no idea what's going on, but I got that last email as well.

So anyone have the abridged version of where we stand with this? Smile

Sure, why not. A quick recap will keep any newcomers up to date as well Razz

It started with a plea from help sent out alongside a simple test from Darcy Collingwood. Darcy works for the Metropolitan Public Library, and assists in recovering various artifacts. Darcy's current assignment is to follow Flynn and keep him safe while he sets about recovering some sort of item (Believed to be a ring, but could be anything really) from the Staffordshire Hoard. Problem is, Flynn doesn't know he has a "babysitter" and took an early flight, leaving Darcy behind with only the clue he was chasing to lead to his whereabouts.

After figuring out the clue, we found out that he went to the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. When Darcy got there, she found the next clue in the form of a USB stick embedded in a notepad. Problem is, it's important enough that Flynn wouldn't willingly leave it behind, meaning something bad has happened. Now the only way to find out what's going on is to follow the trail to the end.

Fairly lenghy, but there ya go Razz

Right, here are the files from the memory stick.

Stoke was... an interesting experience. I've got to get my thoughts straight about it before I tell you what happened, and it is past midnight now. My head is so full of everything from today... it just seems like too much happened for me to properly comprehend it, you know?

Anyway, let me know what you think about this lot. It's got to have something to do with the thing that Flynn is after. Maybe it'll tell us what it is, what it looks like, or what it does?

Best,
Darcy

Much thanks.

I haven't found anything else. I only was able to find the one painting because it had the artist's name on it. I am working on others, but searching for things like "winter painting 1916 snowy road" is not too helpful Wink

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Simple substitution gives us "Tate" so sites like This may help out after all Razz

Edit: Got another, same site and all. Looks like all of them are gonna be there then. Link

Possible, but it looks more like some sort of dais here perhaps, with runes on it. Though if you look at the sketch and compare it to that piece there's a lack of segments on it. But who knows, it may just be my sleepiness talking Razz

Edit: Got another one Here. Thank goodness for the search function Razz

Excuse the double post, but Darcy's sent another mail with another part of the puzzle:
Quote:
OK, so here's my report from Stoke. It took a while to get up here because I had to recopy out my notes I made at the time... you'll see why in a minute.

So, I went to the Potteries Museum. Looked around, even spoke to the staff. They were all really lovely, and happy to chat about the Hoard, but not one of them knew of any sort of secret message. Not that I could be too obvious anyway, given that I was trying not to give away that I was looking for weird clues... especially since I was still really jumpy about what might have happened to Flynn (well I still am, really. >.<).

Just about ready to give up, I went outside. It was nearly five I think, so the museum wasn't even going to be open much longer. I'll admit, I was utterly dejected, and I sat down outside. And that was when I saw it.

Passing the museum, I saw a bus. On the side, where the adverts usually are, was a white strip, with a symbol that looked a bit like a wheel. Above the wheel were twelve numbers in a row. Now, I thought that was really odd, but I grabbed a pen and made a note of the numbers anyway. Then, a few minutes later, there was another one, different numbers. Then another. Then another. Ocassionally I saw the same bus... or ones with the same numbers on, go past. But all in all, there were six different patterns. I made a note of all of them, in the order that I saw them (not counting the multiples).

I've written them up neat, and put the symbol on the bottom of the sheet. The numbers down the left are just the order I saw the buses in. I wish I'd thought to write the bus numbers too, but it didn't occur to me to do it until afterwards... I'm kicking myself, I know. If it helps, I was sitting outside the museum on the Broad Street side, just looking at the buses going right to left... the ones going the other way didn't have anything interesting on them, at least, not on the side facing me.

Anyway, I'm SURE this must have something to do with the trail. Why else would it be there, right outside the museum?

I hope you guys can make some sense out of this, because to me it was just gobbledebook.

And now, I really should get to bed... it's 2am here, and I don't think I'm over the jetlag yet. Not to mention that the stress of today has just been... yeah. >.<

Hopefully yours,
Darcy.

Well it.jpg looks like the symbol she found on the buses, it has 8 sections and in s.jpg there are 8 symbols. Maybe there's some significance there. In regards to the numbers, the only thing I could figure was, due to the minus and x symbols that they are either some sort of equation or coordinates of some sort but I've always sucked at coordinates. I'll keep taking a look at the the other stuff, but are the paintings more than just a location clue? Are we supposed to gain something more from them?

5.jpg is this one. I'll see if I can find any of the others. Once we've found out more about them, maybe we'll find a connection between them (perhaps something to do with the artists, or collection numbers, or if/where they're currently on display or something)

Edit: 1.jpg is here.

Continuing the search...
