okie dokie. new blog from Darcy:

Quote:
I spoke to Charlene today, on the phone. It was actually really helpful, and calmed me down a lot, just hearing her voice... I mean, sure, she was plenty mad at me. But they're not firing me just yet, which is definitely a bonus. I think her words were something like "you got him into this mess, so now you have to get him out of it".

Which is a bit harsh, really, since I didn't make him take an early plane and get captured.

But whatever.

She also had some interesting information about these Numerologica people. Apparently, the Numerologica Corporation are a rather secretive, shadowy bunch. They're the people you go to when you want something at all costs, and want someone who can get it for you... if you're not too fussy about how they get it. All they ask is that you don't ask questions... and that you have a lot of cash to stump up for their services.

It's a group shrowded in secrecy; they have no proper website or anything, and they're always changing their email addresses and stuff... so it's not like we're going to stumble upon their company mainframe or anything. Which is a shame. But, and here's something interesting... because of their immense cloak and dagger stuff, each operative (they're all named after numbers, apparently, like the Five guy who contacted me) only knows maybe two or three other operatives. Helps them keep their secrets, that way.

Which makes me wonder... maybe some of you could somehow manage to convince Five that you're other members of the organisation? Nine or Twenty Seven or something... I don't know. I'm no good at pretending to be something I'm not, as you'll probably have figured out by now. I'm just Darcy Collingwood, and you get what you see. But you guys... could you do it? Maybe they'd release some information to you if they thought you were one of them.

Or, if you have any other good ideas... I'm keen to hear those too.

Charlene wanted me to pass on her thanks too. For helping me out... she says "tell them I knew I could count on them". Which I hope isn't a dig at me.

And so I wrote this email to Numerologica Five:

Quote:

It means the same to us as it does to you... though we are better at maintaining the shroud that we, and you, are supposed to be maintaining.

Thankfully for you, you passed our little test. There will be no need to report back to One about your candor and lack of discretion. Honestly, numeroligcafiveSPLATgooglemail.com? What if you were to be traced? We must protect the organization at all costs!

Now, as I said earlier, we have infiltrated Ms. Collingwood's inner circle and have gained her trust. However because of this link we have lost a little of our direction from One. That's where you come in to play, Five. We need you to pass on One's instructions to us.

This much I can tell you. Ms. Collingwood does not have the stone. However, she trusts US to help her find it. This guise we will maintain.

We are awaiting your next communication.

- one of Many

Very Good Editing! Very Happy I think the message sounds very good and you were able to incorporate our strategy with the suggestion that Darcy made about acting as another cell of the Numerologica. Nice touch with dressing Five down a bit for his indiscretion Wink

Can't wait to see the response.

I am still not convinced of your identity, so I propose I conduct a Numerologica identity test. By answering this correctly, I will know that you are indeed one of us.

I await your response.

Like Darcy, I was curious why the Lapis Temestas was so named and as she suggested contacted Five for that info.

I think it would be best if you were to answer one of the Numerologica identity tests. If you can answer this question correctly, then I will know that you are one of us.

By my asking of the question, you should be satisfied.

I await your response.

Am, sadly, clueless about syntacticAtrocity's answer and just guessed on mine. Dunno

I was thinking about the clues above, but it's hard because 'taken from' has so many synonyms. I thought the first was 'act' and the last could be 'grande' or 'venti' (both sizes you can get in starbucks) but this one is elluding me for now. Amandel's clues too; the last must be 'knee' the first could be 'tense' or 'suspicious' but that doesn't feel right. The second could be 'divided' but considering the way in which the rest of the message ws worded, maybe the clues reveal a second question of sorts? Maybe it follows the original pattern of last letter of the last clue is the first letter of the next but I'm not so sure.

I was also thinking that all three words form one larger word when put together to provide a name or something as it's an identity test. Or maybe it's a word or phrase related to numerologica? I hope this helps someone else. In the mean time i'll be working on it.

This undoubtedly isn't "it"... but thought I'd share anyway because I got a giggle out of it, and well.. because I haven't come up with squat. Wink

ACT - To perform on stage
REMOVED - Taken from
GRANDE - A large size of warm beverage

ANGST - A great sense of unease
RATIONED - To be shared between
GENU - The joint in the centre of the leg

heh, i wonder how much of that is manifest destiny?

anyways, it is proving tough to determine what "it" is. we can't simply answer "ARG" to Five, can we? this type of puzzle should yield a code word, in my opinion.

"taken from" and "to be shared between" both indicate something of a union between the respective 1st and 3rd statements. ACT taken from GRANDE (if that is it). ANGST shared between GENU.

that's my pattern of thinking right now.

Admit to finding this odd yet the online Thesaurus gives "percolate" as a synonym(informal use) of both to perform and to act.
To percolate means to make a large pot of coffee (of course). Also, the latin words per colata mean "by filter/clarify". Laughing

My 2 cents. Since nobody found a better solution, I would suggest to go with "ARG". At least the ball is at the PM side and the PM has to react somehow.
Perhaps the whole procedure can be read up in the Agent Recognition Guidelines. Wink

It could have a couple of IG meanings:
Archaelogical Recovery Group or any other A... Recovery Group, who knows.

I highly doubt it's the answer... there are so many synonyms that fit those descriptions. (Taken from = Removed, Withdrawn, Stolen, Subtracted etc
A great sense of unease = Angst, Dread, Anxiety etc)

The large size of warm beverage could be Grande, but if they're looking for something numerically based it could be Venti [20] coupled with the "Taken From" clue, might be an equation... Actually "Grande" might even mean 1000. The "Joint in the middle of the leg" is most likely "Knee" as opposed to "Genu"... and might end a word such as EBONY, HACKNEY, ALIMONY....

Just too many possibilities.... and there's no real clue whether you should take the first letter of the words, or maybe it's a homonym based puzzle, or deduct/subtract/share letters between the first and the third clues, or maybe it translates to actual numbers. It is after all a Numerologica Identity test? Even "ACT" [Perform on stage?] means to "Do a Number"...???

Or maybe it's something like this [using the incorrect middle word only as an example]

ACT ENDORSE VENTI

I'm definitely finding this test quite difficult...

Quote:
To perform on stage
Taken from
A large size of warm beverage

My thinking was that the middle phrase was an instruction meaning the answer from the third line should be subtracted from the answer to the first line in order to get a new word

But, I'm having a hard time finding answers that fit.

First thought for the first line answer would be "act"
First thoughts for the third line would be "grande" or "venti" since Starbucks is the only large chain of coffee shops I know that has names for thier sizes other than the usual "small, medium, large"

Other thoughts could be "mug" or "carafe" maybe, but those still wouldn't fit with my vision of how to get to the answer that five seeks. I would assume you could take the word "act" from a larger word with those letters in it in order to make a new word, such as "exact" for example... take act out and you would be left with "ex"

Maybe sharing my thoughts will help others get to the right answer if I'm on the right trail Wink

Coffee Back to the drawingboard due to this email from Five which at least sheds some light:

ok so if its a number we are looking for. hows this for a thoery.

to perform on stage = act = 3 letters

taken from = (the math bit) just do as it says

a large warm beverage = grande = 5 letters

so take 3 from 5 and you get 2, theres your number.
