Making compendium of current MH knowledge - help needed

Hello everyone, I've begun to make a great big document comprised of everything we know about Marble Hornets so far. Every character, entry, TTA response and relationship is going to be explained in detail and all of our current knowledge put in one place.

The way I see it, with the downtime we currently have and an apparently missing/dead TTA, I figure we can do one of two things. We can wildly speculate, or compile and study the facts. I think the latter is the better option if we want to make any progress while nothing is happening. After we do the latter, we can do the former much more effectively.

But, I need your help. I need you guys to simply start posting things we know, anything. Not speculation, but hard facts. Anything and everything you can think of that will help create this knowledge bank. If someone discovered a new, exciting thing in an entry that people generally ignored or a specific method of deciphering a TTA response or something along those lines, a citation would be most appreciated, but not necessary. I'll take what you guys post and organize it in what is, at least for now, a Word document that will be organized by character or entry, depending on where things fit best.

I also want to create a diagram showing the relationships between all the characters, to give a greater understanding of how they all relate to and interact with each other.

After I've compiled everything into one document of some sort, I'll upload it onto a file hosting site and release it for all to utilize.

We need to get back to the cold, hard facts. We need to remember that the ultimate question posed by this ARG/YouTube serial/work of fiction is: why was Slender Man following Alex, and where are they now? My hope is that through this project, we can get back to the point.

Thanks in advance, guys. I know we can really hammer this thing out well.

Made this and posted it in the trailhead. Don't know if it will help at all.

----

J:
-We know that Alex and J were friends, presumingly close enough that Alex hand over the video tapes he planned to burn.
-After seeing pictures and stories about the Slender Man on Something Awful, he decided to go look over Alex's tapes.
-He's had memory blackouts, which began about three years ago. As of late, his health is deteriorating.
-He was in the fifth and thirteenth eateries, and every entry from fifteen and onward.

Alex:
-Alex was a film student, shooting a movie called "Marble Hornets".
-Alex wanted to destroy the tapes. While he did begrudgingly give them to J, he said he wanted nothing to do with them and didn't want them shown to other people.
-His health was also deteriorating. The last time J saw him he was thin and pale.
-Eventually, he was said to have transferred schools never to be seen again.
-When know that the ordeal with Slender Man at least made Alex's behavior become more eccentric and he showed signs of paranoia. He was irritable in some situations.
-He appeared in every entry from the first to the fourteenth and again in the seventeenth.

Brian:
-Brain was an actor in "Marble Hornets".
-He was presumingly a friend of Alex's, close enough he would confide somethings with.
-He appears in the seventh and twelfth entries and is mentioned in the seventeenth. He is mentioned in entry five.

Tim:
-Tim was an actor in "Marble Hornets".
-He was more a friend to Brian than he was to Alex.
-In entry fifteen, he claims that Alex's irritability might have been due to someone leaving dead animals at his property.
-In entry seventeen his face was shadowed.
-He appears in entries nine, fifteen, and seventeen and is mentioned in the seventh. He is assumed approaching in the twelfth entry.

Sarah:
-Sarah is an actress in "Marble Hornets".
-She appears in entries nine and twelve. She is also mentioned in entry five.

Unknown Camera Man:
-He only appears in entry nine, as far as we know.

ToTheArk:
-He first replied to the entries after the ninth entry.
-He is cryptic and his messages are intended largely for J.
-He claims listening is important.
-He was likely in the House, filming J during entry twelve. While not proven, its the most likely case.

Masked Man:
-He was in the House in entry eighteen.
-He made aggressive actions towards J, seemingly to attack him.
-He had a seizure shortly after the attack.
-When J tried to remove his mask, he attacked to prevent it.
-During both of his aggressions towards there was audio distortion.

Slender Man:
-When he appeared in entries, four, six, and ten there was no audio.
-When he appeared entries five and seven, there was audio distortion. There was also slight video corruption in entry five. The audio corruption in entry seven was towards the very end before the clip cut out.
-Despite appearing in entries elven and fourteen, there is no audio or video corruption.
-When he appeared in entry twelve there was both visual and audio curroption.
-When he appears in entry thirteen there was visual corruption, around Tim's head.
-He was following around Alex

The Woods:
-A lot of Slender Man activity seems to be happening around the filming of Marble Hornets, even when they were just "scouting".

The House:
-A tip lead J to the house, from an unknown source.
-The house, despite being in ruins, has showed signs of someone living there at least recently, even if they were just squatting.
-Blood was found in the house, in small droplets leading to a blood filled sink.
-Some of Alex's drawings were found there, or at the very least drawings very similar to Alex's. J took some.
-There was a bullet casing found in the house. J took this.
-There were two pill bottles in the house. J too one.

Videos:
-Including the Introduction and totheark's responses, there is a current total of 28 videos.
-18 of these are Entries.
-7 of these are totheark's responses.
-totheark began responding after Entry 9.
-2 of the Entries were filmed by J.
-The other 16 were taken from Alex's tapes filmed in 2006.
-Several of those 16 were from raw Marble Hornets footage.
-The rest are from Alex's personal camera. (anyone mind getting the exact numbers for these? I don't have the time to right now)
-The Slender Man definitely appears in at least 10 Entries (possibly 11, I can't remember what happens in #9).
-SM does not appear in any TTA responses.

Might add more later.

That exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for, thanks to all of you.

By the way, if you contribute anything at all to this, no matter how big or small the contribution, you will be credited in the document itself.

Just a nitpick: there have actually been three filmed by J, with the remaining fifteen taken from the tapes.

I plan on posting a chronological breakdown/transcript/summary of every single video here in a bit. I'm gonna need to go get some coffee first though ;)

Heh, you're right. Forgot about the interview.

Anyway, gonna redo my previous post, making corrections and additions.

Videos:
-Including the Introduction and totheark's responses, there is a current total of 28 videos.
-18 of these are Entries.
-9 of these are totheark's responses.
-totheark began responding after Entry 9.
-3 of the Entries were filmed by J.
-The other 15 were taken from Alex's tapes filmed in 2006.
-6 of those 15 were from raw Marble Hornets footage, including location scouting and test shooting.
-The remaining 9 are from Alex's personal camera.

Slender Man Appearances:
-The Slender Man definitely appears in at least 10 Entries.
-The Slender Man does not appear in any totheark responses.
-All of the videos Slender Man appears in contain visual or audio distortion, or missing audio.

Distortion:
-There are 3 definite types of distortion: visual tearing, distorted colour/image, and audio corruption.
-There are also examples of missing audio, although it is unknown if this is distortion or if it was removed manually.
-Distorted colour/image and audio corruption seem to occur together often, but not all the time.
-There are 6 Entries containing visual tearing: #1, #3, #4, #7, #14, and #16.
-There are 4 Entries containing distorted colour/image: #5, #12, #17 and #18.
-There are 4 Entries containing audio corruption: #5, #7, #12, and #18.
-There are 6 Entries with missing audio: #1, #4, #6, #8, #10, and #13.

Besides those definite examples, there's also possible missing audio at the beginning of #14, possible tearing in #17 (the whole picture seems to move up between 1:00 and 1:03), possible distorted audio and colour/image in the second half of #14, and possible distorted colour/image in #4.

Okay, here goes.

Video: "Introduction"
Date posted: June 20, 2009
YouTube description: "0"
Runtime: 1 minute, 59 seconds

Summary:

With footage of a drive through suburbia rolling in the background, J tells us about his college friend Alex Kralie, who began to exhibit strange behavior in the summer of 2006 while working on his student film, Marble Hornets. J goes on to explain that Alex had abruptly halted production of the movie, and had intended to burn all of the tapes containing footage of Marble Hornets. Not wanting to see his friend's work destroyed, J, also a film student, convinced Alex to give him the tapes, under the condition that he never mention them to Alex again. Alex then left for a different school and has not been heard from since, while the tapes lay forgotten in J's closet. Three years later, J has rediscovered the tapes, and has decided to upload anything he finds interesting.

J's narration:

Quote:
The following clips are raw footage excerpts from Alex Kralie. A college friend of mine.

In 2006, Alex was in the process of shooting his student film, entitled Marble Hornets.

Over the three months that this took place, his film crew complained of his increasing levels of stress and irritability.

Near the end of shooting, Alex halted production indefinitely and dropped the unfinished project.

He told me it was due to the "unworkable conditions" on his set, which was less than a mile away from his house.

I asked what he planned to do with the countless number of tapes he had filled.

"Burn them."

Being a film student myself, I hated to see all of his work go to waste.

And after some coercing he agreed to give them to me.

Under the condition that I never mention it to him again.

Soon after, Alex transferred to another school and I haven't seen him since.

At the time, I was too unnerved to look through the tapes, and eventually forgot about them.

A few days ago I found them filed away in the back of my closet.

After three years and zero contact with Alex, I have decided to look through them.

All the tapes are unnumbered and missing timestamps. Other than taking place in the summer of 2006, it is impossible to determine the exact order or date of each.

Notes:

-The background footage in Introduction has no apparent significance other than providing atmosphere.

-As with all of his future videos, J provides the narration with a text overlay.

Video: "Entry #1"
Date posted: June 20, 2009
YouTube description: "1"
Runtime: 48 seconds

Summary:

In this short, silent clip, Alex is filming inside his house at night. He turns off the lamp, then approaches a window overlooking his porch. As the camera pans to the right, we see a tall, thin, faceless figure resembling a man in a suit standing on the porch with his right arm raised. He then snaps his head towards the window, as if to look back at Alex. Alex retreats and the tape ends.

Chronology:

@00:21 - Footage begins.
@00:23 - Minor visual tearing occurs.
@00:33 - Slenderman is seen outside.
@00:35 - Slenderman looks back at Alex.
@00:37 - Footage ends.

J's narration:

Quote:
Entry #1

After viewing a couple of tapes and finding nothing unusual, I came across a clip that doesn't fit with the others.

From what I can tell, the following footage takes place inside Alex's house, not the set for Marble Hornets.

The audio has been removed. Either the microphone was disabled at the time, or it was taken out afterwards.

[Alex's footage]

This was the only thing that was out of the ordinary on this particular tape.

After seeing this clip, I'll keep an eye out for occurrances[sic] similar to this one in the future.

Notes:

-This is the first video uploaded by J to feature Slenderman, a mysterious, seemingly paranormal entity that was following Alex in 2006.

-The encounter with Slenderman that occurs in this footage does not seem to be Alex's first.

-The visual tearing that occurs right before Alex turns off the light is common in the Entries, and appears to be related in some way to the Slenderman phenomenon.

-Although the tape ends after Alex ducks away from the window, J notes that the footage from Entry #6 looks to be a continuation of this same incident, picking up from where Entry #1 left off.

Video: "Entry #2"
Date posted: June 21, 2009

Runtime: 1 minute, 36 seconds

Summary:

Alex documents himself driving down the road in the middle of the night, searching for a strange man he saw near the set of Marble Hornets while walking his dog.

Chronology:

@00:14 - Footage begins.
@01:06 - Alex stops at the streetlight that he saw Slenderman standing under and gets out of his car.
@01:24 - Footage ends.

Dialogue:

Quote:
Alex: I got home late tonight and I was taking Rocky for his walk about, uh, twenty minutes ago, so around midnight. This was near the set of Marble Hornets. Uh, a little bit farther down the road we saw this really tall guy standing in the middle of the street, just completely still. For whatever reason, this really set off Rocky, and uh, he got- got really scared, he wouldn't move, and he kept on pulling on his leash to go back home. There was something about this guy that was just... it was strange. So, uh, we headed back home, I have a little bit of time left on this tape, and uh, I'm gonna go see if he's still hanging around. In fact, I think this is the light that he was standing under, so I'm going to go have a look here...

[Alex gets out of the car]

...okay, you can't really see it well on the camera, but I don't see anyone around here, so I guess he's moved on. Uh... but yeah. There's just something about that th--

[tape cuts off]

J's narration:

Quote:
Entry #2

After a few more hours of tapes, I found this clip of Alex talking while driving.

For now, I will assume that this probably took place before the events of entry #1.

[Alex's footage]

The tape ends there.

From what he describes, I think he has seen something similar to the figure that appears in entry #1.

Notes:

-From the description and the video itself, it seems probable that this is Alex's first run-in with Slenderman.

-Alex mentions that his dog, Rocky, became very frightened upon seeing Slenderman, indicating that animals apparently find his presence unnatural or threatening.

-Nothing out of the ordinary occurs in this video, although the tape cuts off while Alex is still out of the car investigating.

Video: "Entry #3"
Date posted: June 23, 2009
YouTube description: "3"
Runtime: 2 minute, 29 seconds

Summary:

A total of seven different clips unrelated to Marble Hornets, taken from numerous tapes. They are as follows:

First clip - Alex is sitting on a couch with the camera pointing at his left knee, we hear him shuffling through papers. He gets up for a few seconds, then sits back down.

Second clip - A brief clip of Alex filming outside at sunset, as if he's looking for something.

Third clip - Alex is in what appears to be a Wal-Mart. We see him take a pack of digital video cassettes ($23? Ouch, I thought Wal-Mart was supposed to be cheap.) from the rack. The camera then points downward at the floor as Alex walks away and the clip ends.

Fourth clip - Alex is at his computer. He stares at the screen while typing intermittently, as if searching or chatting. Apparently spooked, he suddenly stops and looks at the window, but sees nothing. He then grabs a replacement tape for the camera.

Fifth clip - Somewhat like the second clip, but during the daytime. Alex is outside in the woods, moving the camera around like he's looking for something. The footage is jerky and unclear for the first few seconds.

Sixth clip - The camera sits on Alex's dashboard, recording him while he drives around town at night.

Seventh clip - It is daytime. Alex is at the same window from the fourth clip, peering out curiously between the blinds. His cellphone rings and he flips it open then closed, dismissing the call. He then grabs the camera and relocates it as the clip ends.

Chronology:

@00:21 - Footage begins.
@00:30 - Visual tearing occurs.
@01:20 - Something seems to scare Alex.
@01:32 - Fifth clip begins. Possible video distortion.
@01:37 - Video distortion ends.
@02:08 - Footage ends.

J's narration:

Quote:
Entry #3

I am starting to notice a vast majority of the tapes are completely unrelated to Marble Hornets.

At some point, it seems Alex began filming himself exclusively.

The following clips are taken from roughly twelve tapes.

[Alex's footage]

From what I have been seeing so far, many of these tapes could contain nothing substantial.

Although it does seem that Alex wanted to have a camera on himself at all times.

The clip from entry #1 is still the best lead I have so far.

Notes:

-J claims that the footage for this entry is taken from "roughly twelve" tapes; However, there are only seven clips and none of them appear to be spliced together from different tapes. Perhaps J should watch more Sesame Street.

-In the first clip, Alex is can be heard shuffling several papers. These are probably some of the Slenderman-related drawings we see in later entries.

-It is not clear if the bad video quality at the start of the fifth clip is distortion related to Slenderman or not.

Video: "Entry #4"
Date posted: June 25, 2009
YouTube description: "4"
Runtime: 45 seconds

Summary:

Another clip with no audio. Alex is filming at an empty playground at night. Some of the playground equipment seems to have moved by itself, and Slenderman is spotted nearby. Alex tries to chase him but he is nowhere to be found.

Chronology:

@00:08 - Footage begins.
@00:14 - Alex passes by a see-saw. Both boards have the same side facing up
@00:18 - Visual tearing occurs, the swings are moving.
@00:23 - Alex turns around to see that one of the see-saws is now sitting the opposite way.
@00:24 - Slenderman is seen moving behind a nearby trashcan.
@00:36 - Footage ends.

J's narration:

Quote:
Entry #4

I found another tape containing strange footage and no audio track.

[Alex's footage]

This and entry #1 are the only clips I have found that do not have sound.

I am starting to suspect that Alex removed the audio himself.

Notes:

-Some of the playground equipment is moved, presumably because of Slenderman as no one else but Alex is present.

-Slenderman seems to pass rather close to Alex, but when Alex gives chase, he is gone. Based on what we see here and in future entries, Slenderman can either move supernaturally fast, or can vanish and re-appear elsewhere.

-This is one of several entries where Alex seems to be actively looking for Slenderman. In other entries we see him running away or hiding from Slenderman. There is presently no concrete understanding of how, when or why Alex's behavior towards Slenderman changed.

Video: "Entry #5"
Date posted: June 29, 2009
YouTube description: "5"
Runtime: 3 minutes, 35 seconds

Summary:

This clip is from the early stages of the Marble Hornets production, when Alex and J were discussing locations for filming. Their conversation is inaudible at times because of distortion.

Chronology:

@00:20 - Footage begins.
@00:28 - Visual tearing.
@00:35 - Severe audio distortion.
@00:54 - Audio distortion ends.
@01:07 - Moderate audio distortion.
@01:32 - Audio distortion ends.
@01:44 - Visual tearing.
@01:55 - Slight audio distortion.
@02:07 - Audio distortion ends.
@02:34 - Severe audio distortion.
@02:46 - Audio distortion ends.
@03:00 - Footage ends.

Dialogue:

Quote:
J: Alright, it's recording

Alex: Okay, uh, this is the gazebo where I want Brian to come back and reflect later in the movie, this'll probably be about three fourths of the way through.

J: This'll just be by himself, right?

Alex: Yeah. I'm thinking about maybe putting in a- [unintelligible due to distortion] -and then we'll have him like, reflect and decide to actually go back to Sarah, try and win her back. Um, and we got a good number of shots here. We have the stream down there, uh, and— [unintelligible due to distortion]

J: [unintelligible due to distortion] -area, it's very, I dunno, secluded I guess.

[video cuts to another location]

J: Alright.

Alex: Alright. This is going to be near Sarah's hunting camp. Uh, over there is where we'll do the bonfire scene, over by the fireplace.

J: Yeah. *coughs*

Alex: I also want a shot of the next day where uh, Sarah and Brian, and uh, I might also have Tim there at some point, are sitting around thinking about the past, you know just-

J: Yeah.

Alex: -talking about days gone by. Uh, I really like this place since we have the treeline that basically blocks off our entire shooting area and we also have these uh, really tall trees right in the middle which personally I just think are really cool.

J:: Whats that tall, red thing over there?

Alex: Yeah, that's, like an old climbing wall, or- I can't remember if it was a climbing wall or if the fire department- [unintelligible due to distortion] -although I wish that tall grass were all level or we had more of it, it just kind of abruptly stops over there.

J: Yeah.

Alex: But um, I'm sure we can work our way around it.

J's narration:

Quote:
Entry #5

Before Marble Hornets began production, I went location scouting with Alex.

I filmed him talking about the locations he was interested in using.

I came across one of the tapes containing this footage that has had its audio severely distorted.

[Alex's footage]

In addition to the audio distortion, there have also been numerous instances of visual tearing.

I've noticed these occurring in previous entries as well.

[Clips from previous entries]

It is possible that I missed other occurances[sic] of this in tapes that I have already watched.

Notes:

-Although Slenderman does not appear to be in this footage, the audio and video anomalies associated with his presence are quite numerous.

-It is still not known what significance the tall, reddish-brown structure pointed out by J has, if any.

Video: "Entry #6"
Date posted: July 4, 2009
YouTube description: "6"
Runtime: 43 seconds

Summary:

This clip is very similar in nature to Entry #1, and is found at the start of a new tape, leading J to believe it is a continuation of the footage from said entry, where Slenderman was lurking outside Alex's home during the night.

Chronology:

@00:15 - Footage begins.
@00:27 - Slenderman appears outside, in a location Alex had checked just a few seconds before. Alex retreats further into the house.
@00:36 - Slenderman moves slowly in front of the windows and front door, looking in at Alex.
@00:43 - Footage ends.

J's narration:

Quote:
Entry #6

I found the following clip at the beginning of a new tape.

This could be the continuation of entry #1, which took place at the end of a tape.

Notes:

-This video presents another example of Slenderman's apparent supernatural movement.

-When Slenderman passes in front of the window, a light shines on his head, revealing vague, shadowy features similar to eyes and a mouth.

Video: "Entry #7"
Date posted: June 29, 2009
YouTube description: "Patterns emerging."
Runtime: 2 minutes

Summary:

This clip is from the filming of Marble Hornets. Alex and Brian are rehearsing dialogue from the movie.

Chronology:

@00:20 - Footage begins.
@00:46 - Visual tearing.
@01:35 - Brian moves his head to reveal that Slenderman has appeared in the background.
@01:50 - Audio distortion.
@01:52 - Footage ends.

Dialogue:

Quote:
Alex: Let's start again.

Brian: Let's start again, let's start again.

[video cuts]

Brian: [beginning is cut off]-to look at you?

Alex: Yeah that's fine.

Brian: Alright.

Alex: Alright, I'm rolling, and uh, just a second let me...

Brian: *sighs*

[video cuts]

Brian: I thought you were talking to her.

Alex: No. Crap, I just lost the script. Or something.

[Alex gets out of car, video cuts]

Alex: And I'm talking to Brian.

Brian: *laughs*

Alex: Yeah, don't- don't say anything because the camera picks it up. Alright, you ready?

Brian: Yeah, are you going to feed me Tim's lines?

Alex: Uh, yeah, just a second.

Brian: Okay.

Alex: Alright, action.

Brian: I don't know, this town just doesn't feel the same to me anymore. I missed it so much when I was in college. But now that I'm back, I just feel like a depressed teenager all over again, stuck in a loop of unhappiness.

Alex: Maybe you've grown up.

Brian: I don't know, maybe this town has grown up.

Alex: Maybe it has.

Alex: Alright, good.

Brian: Are we going to do it again?

Brian: ...Are we?

Alex: (noticing Slenderman) No, we're done.

Brian: That's it?

Alex: (firmly) Yeah, we're done.

[Alex hurriedly starts the car and begins pulling out]

Brian: (confused) Okay...

J's narration:

Quote:
Entry #7

The tape I just watched consisted entirely of raw footage from Marble Hornets.

Other than Brian, Alex also seems to be talking to a girl off camera at one point.

[Alex's footage]

Someone was following Alex.

Notes:

-There is a girl in the back seat, presumably Sarah, but she does not speak or appear on camera.

-The location where Slenderman appears near the end is shown to be vacant earlier in the video, meaning that he appeared there at some point after Alex said "action".

-Brian seems slightly impatient with Alex, who appears to have some minor difficulties while preparing to shoot this segment. Alex's clumsiness and reaction to Slenderman's appearance suggest that the encounters are beginning to take a toll on his psyche.

Summary:

A short clip of Alex, who has scrawled an inordinate amount of Slenderman-related drawings and is in the process of making another one when he suddenly gets up and turns off the light.

Chronology:

@00:10 - Footage begins.
@00:17 - Audio cuts out.
@00:26 - Alex turns off his lamp, the rest of the tape remains dark. Footage ends.

J's narration:

Quote:
Entry #8

I did not notice any visual tearing anywhere in this tape. However, the audio does cut out.

[Alex's footage]

The rest of the tape remains too dark to see and the audio never comes back.

Notes:

-Alex turns off a lamp and plunges the room into darkness, just as he does in Entry #1. Whether the darkness makes Slenderman more likely to appear, makes it easier to record him, or serves some other purpose is unknown.

-Alex is clearly beginning to have serious mental issues at this point, judging from his numerous crude and obsessive drawings.

-Many of the drawings feature a circle with an X through it, sometimes serving as a head. This has been dubbed the Operator symbol by fans.

-Other things that can be seen in the drawings are trees, stick figures resembling Slenderman, and phrases including "TREES", "SEES ME", "FINDS ME", "SPEAKS TO ME", "HIM" and "[unknown word] THESE PINES".

-The drawing that Alex is working on before he stops contains the letters "H E L".

-The audio cuts out at the same moment that Alex stops drawing.

---

I'll do some more tomorrow.

Nice summaries, but I want to echo that we have most of those transcriptions on the wiki: http://marblehornets.wikidot.com/. You should integrate all this work into that; it's best to have one complete source of all known info. Plus it'll be good having more people working on the wiki! Trust me, it's not a lost cause. We're only a few entries behind.

@Sachael: Holy crap, that's awesome, thanks so much. If you could do all of the entries, that would be fantastic.

And about the wiki, we could probably put this on there after it's all done and good. I'd rather put all the info into one big document first, and then incorporate it into the wiki.

OOG and off-topic, sort of, but I have to say this.

Is that a two-tone slender man? I think I love you.
