[TRAILHEAD] The 7 Deaths of Jack

Got this in my Inbox yesterday:

Quote:
Subject: Jack Is Dead
From: "Jack [*******]" - 7thdeathofjackSPLATgmail.com
Date: Saturday, November 21, 2009 2:07:25 PM

http://the7deathsofjack.blogspot.com/

7 days and 7 nights.
7 men and 7 knives.
6 deaths and 7 lives.
The next one shall be my last.
Save me now and save me fast.

LOOK DEEPER, LOOK DEEPER, LOOK DEEPER
<DEEPER>

The "LOOK DEEPER" parts were in bold.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Going to the blog, there's one post titled "A poem" with the poem from the E-Mail in it.

Hidden in the source code of the post is this binary, commented out:

01010100-01101000-01100101-01111001-00100000-01101000-01100001-01110110-01100101-00100000-01110100-01100001-01101011-01100101-

Which decodes to:

They have taken me to Eden.

Alrighty then, let the game begin!

Interesting. The blog has been updated. However, the entry in the source code is quite different from the published one...

and leads to this: http://www.7thdeathofjack.webs.com/

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
From the blog source code
EDIT: http://www.7thdeathofjack.webs.com/ The stuff was really weird. A whole bunch of holy texts and images. I checked his house some more. He has writing all in the margins of his bible. Every time the word Eden is in the book of Genesis he underlines it

Someone asked about this over on the "Analysis" thread, also. I sent an email to the address saying "Are you Jack?", and got this back:

Quote:
No, I found the password for this email at Jack's house. His sister and I searched the house for clues. We didn't find much besides a few cryptic notes. Jack was getting really weird before he left. The poem on the blogspot was from one of the notes.

New post on the blogspot, "genesis", I don't what the picture is of, but someone should try destegging it, see if anything comes out of it

EDIT: Duh I think it is the band Genesis, but Idk

EDITDOS: Also genesis the beginning of the bible, so maybe it's meaning that this is the beginning of something, but that is definitely the band Genesis there.

I'm new to the whole destegging thing, do you need a password if you use any tool, or just camoflauge(the one I downloaded)

You'll need a password for this particular one, If it is stegged. Unless it's abnormally large, don't look for it to be stegged. It may very well just be a visual clue. Sometimes, that visual clue is a clue to a password needed to desteg it, but evidently not so in this case.

I sent an email back saying
Quote:
Ah, I see. I notice the blog has been updated, and I'm curious, what is the picture of Genesis for? Was it just something among Jack's various notes?

and got:
Quote:
I'm afraid. Listen, you'll understand.

With 2 things attached. One is an audio file, but the other is called maninrobe2.m4a, which I can't seem to open with anything. They both came in maninrobe.zip, so if anyone wants me to email them the .zip so they can try to open it, I gladly will. Here's the audio file:

I would try to attach the .m4a, but I think it would just try to open with whatever I tried to open it with last (which was Windows Media Player), for whoever would download it. Besides, it's also 6.19 MB, which would take forever to upload with dialup, and it's late where I am Smile

m4a is an apple lossless audio file. You probably need itunes to listen to it. Also, the .wav file seems to be empty. Windows Media Player lists it as being 0 seconds long. You should try and upload the .m4a file when you can.

ETA: It may be possible that he included the .wav extension to throw us off. Why would there be two audio files, both with different extensions, why not just use the same extension for each file? Also, .wav is a uncompressed file format, so if the file is only 28kb, it's unlikely that it contains any sound worth noting. My suspicions are that it's a picture, or some other form of message with the file extension changed. I've tried changing it to .jpg, .jpeg, and .gif, all with no results, but I will keep trying.

I tried opening the WAV as a .txt and the first few characters are
Quote:
RIFF$r WAVEfmt
which makes me think it's a legitimate .wav file (although still possibly with something hidden in it). I opened it in Audacity, and it appears to be very sped up distortion. Slowing it down 100% didn't make it sound like anything to me, though.

I noticed the same thing, I was just trying to make sense of it. Why zip two audio files together, when one is 6mb, and the other is 28kb, and they are both different formats?

The wav file is not empty. It's 0.15 second long, and it sounds like it's been sped up a whole lot. Taking it apart, now.

It's stereo, but the two channels are not identical. I've slowed the whole thing down by 80% and split it into left and right, but I still can't make sense of it. It's definitely not voices, but if I slow it down more it might be modem connect tones, at least on the right channel.

dont know if it matters or not but w/ these things you never can tell, in 1972 peter gabriel was still the lead singer not phil collins which is who most ppl associate as the lead.
