but how was Fontaine Atlas AND Oaks at the same time during the civil war? the only reason he was able to be Atlas was because everyone thought Fontaine was dead.

Given that Oakes Vanished before Fontaine made his name in Rapture, I think he was Oakes first, THEN Fontaine, THEN Atlas. He wasn't more than one of them at once.

Lutwidge recognized him as Oakes because he'd seen Oakes's picture in the news clippings about the Vanishing.

Except wasn't the civil war between Fontaine and Ryan? And in one of Lutwidge's writings, he talks about Oakes' wife helping him when he was injured. I thought that was during the civil war.

Could that be Diane McClintock?

Nope. Lutwidge said it was Oakes' wife.

My point is, Lutwidge wouldn't necessarily know. He was already twisting reality to suit his fantasies, even before he got spliced up.

On the other hand... another archive binge couldn't hurt. Let's go find what we know about Oakes. Up for it? Very Happy

Works for me. It'll have to be like, right now though. I'll be busy all day tomorrow for obvious reasons. Very Happy

I've got it.

Check the archives. Go to Oct 1 - Oct 15. Check out the pages from Utropolis where Lutwidge/Quain writes about the White Knight and Catherine. Then check out the letter from Catherine to James, where she says she's leaving him.

We were assuming that letter was a good-bye letter announcing that she was GOING to Rapture, but that didn't make sense, since we know that James went to Rapture too. Now, note that she said "seeking True Rapture" at the end. "True," as in, perhaps the Rapture she was in was false. That certainly fits with many of the Splicer viewpoints ("You promised us paradise, Ryan!"). And read the PS on the back, where she talks about the sky.

She wasn't announcing she was going to Rapture, she was announcing she was LEAVING Rapture.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Remember in the original BioShock, where Fontaine gloats about having fooled you with his phony wife and child, and then says "Maybe I should get a real wife and child one day," and so on? Perhaps he was lying about that, too... perhaps he'd already had one, and lost them, and that line was his bitter way of joking with himself about it (it's probably a RetCon on the part of the ARG writers, but when you think about it, it's actually a pretty logical one, given how deceitful Fontaine was in general).

Here's my theory:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
For Oakes's first few years in Rapture, he was living a double life as James Millard Oakes and Frank Fontaine. Perhaps his wife and daughter were the only ones who knew his real name, even. When the war broke out, he dragged them into the battle with him, but she dragged herself and their kid out. After that, Fontaine shed his Oakes name entirely, which made it much easier to facilitate his reincarnation as Atlas.

This still doesn't answer the question of how any of this fits in with the ARG, or with the BioShock series as a whole now that Oakes/Fontaine/Atlas is dead... but it might mean we haven't heard the last of Catherine and Evelyn.

Well, the letters that we're seeing, I'm 99.9% sure they're from actual currently living people. Fan letters, if you will. 2K posts them.

Oh, I know, I've read the forum posts from people who have had their letters posted. I love how they're playing in-character, but I just think it would be a bit more likely explanation that the person who wrote that letter didn't think of.

I think the last few batches of fan letters have sort of been their way of giving feedback to the fans... notice how Mark makes it clear to stop sending money, and marks off one fan-story as explicitly a red herring.

Yep, definitely fan/player mail - the example letter with cash has also yielded our first anachronism thus far - the cash in the letter had a NEW (i.e. purple) $5 bill - about 40 years too early, not a 60s-era bill.

Great discussion on the Fontaine Family front as well!

Thank you! Very Happy

I'm also wondering if the "James Millard Oakes League" might be a parody of the John Birch Society...

Don't know if anyone's seen this, but as of now, this is the official Cover Art. Hell. Yes.

Is the vinyl LP the same song as the one Mark got?

From what I've read, it's the original Bioshock Soundtrack.

Er... I don't suppose you could scale the images down a little? Shocked

Yeah. I'll put 'em as attachments instead of linking to them.

You know, I can't believe it took us this long to realize that the James Millard Oakes League was a reference to the John Birch Society... they even have similar naming conventions ("Oakes" and "Birch").

And given that the Oakes League's hero went on to become Frank Fontaine, I'm guessing the folks at 2K aren't huge John Birch fans...

Wait a minute, didn't Fontaine die at the end of the first one? How could he still be alive?
