OK, so look at the typo'd words in the letter:

O-E-R-I-B-N and the comma-space error. I translated this to O'Brien, the protagonist of Orwell's 1984.

So maybe that's the source document for the cipher. I'm gonna go track down a copy at the used book store across the street.

It may have been changed since you were looking at it, but it now says:
Quote:
Obviuosly, the door needs a passcode

So the error there would be more in the way of an O-U thing than a B. Not sure what it means, though...

I also used the clue to get the same numbers as Saffity - no luck for me yet either. Sad

gotta go eat. just a quick point, the sender of the letter, Just Keeping Track could also be a cipher hint

J-K-T would be 10-11-20

be back in a bit.

Emailed him with that... also asked him if there was anything that stood out in the room and he replied:

Quote:
Nothing. Four plain cement walls. Four flourescent tube lights over head. And heavy steel door with a key-code lock.

so nothing else in the room, it was just a thought...

10-11-12 didn't work... the number is 4 numbers long (oops I should have remembered that)

On a long shot I checked at a used book store for 1984 and I discovered that of that 8 different printings, none of them had the same alignment (e.g., page 2 starts in a different place in every edition). This makes using it as a source document impossible unless you knew the exact edition.

If you put each of the letters from the final clue lines to numbers it's as follows:

1-8-6
4-4-1
6-17-3
9-6-4

Not sure if it lines up with anything in the letter... I'm looking but it's not working.

Those could be a Allendorf Cipher, but we would need a document with at least 9 pages Sad

I don't think 1984 is related, now that we do not have a missing "B" anymore the letters we have are:
OERION or OERIUN

Unless instead of pages it's going Line-word-letter or Sentence-word-letter, that's what I was checking....

And what about the "poster" name.... it's "Lost in thought" can we get anything out of that?

Me, too - but even if you skip the greeting (i.e., don't count it as a line), the 6-17-3 doesn't work, right? There are only 16 words on that line, and word number 16 only has two letters. The first word on the next line has 3, but if there's a line break issue that would mess up clue #4 also, wouldn't it? Hmm.

Also, since all the errors are a little different, what if the important parts there aren't the errors themselves but the first letter of the words? That would give TTYIOB, right?

If we go line/word/letter, we get:

NYYR or 14-25-25-18. I emailed him to see if it would work.

The one problem is the 3rd coordinates, 6-17-3 doesn't work b/c there's only 16 words in that line. But using the "Four Quarters Combine.", I added the digits together (1+7) and used the 8th word instead. .shrug.

New email...

It didn't work, but i think I know why. Looking at the original doccument and then my post, there are different amounts of lines. So maybe i have to use the cipher on the original document. I'll let you know how that goes!

Um...yea... that could be a problem. Smile

Yes that would solve the 17th word problem.

Edit: And explain the "every value has a place," part of the hint. The other two were clear for me.

Edit2: [META] Lesson learned: Never use blogspot for a puzzle that uses formated text issues Wink [/META]

New blog post:

Quote:
THE CLUES PUT TOGETHER
Thank you guys for all of your help, I think we finally figured it out. Because of discrepencies between the original doc and my post, the cipher wasn't working for you guys. Now, when I converted the first letters of the words to numbers, it came out as- 1,8,6- 4,4,1- 6,17,3- 9,6,4

Now in the original document, all of those coordinates work. It reads out to NFVI, which is 14-6-22-9. I'm going to try this on the door, hopefully it works. As soon as I get out the door (if that is the code), and hopefully into the open world, I'm going to find another place to connect to the internet and update you guys. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP SO FAR HERE'S HOPING!!!
