Lesson 2: Spell check yo sh!t unless that's part of the game. Smile

(I've been playing Hatshoe for so long all typos are now clues!)

Maybe all those typos had been a try to get the line-word formatting correct. Dunno

Looking at it from a META level, why would it matter? The final solution was NFVI, which doesn't mean anything. Wouldn't it have been easier as a PM that when you noticed the error to just say, "Oh yea, NYYR was right!" or any of the other combos we sent him. Maybe it'll pay off in another part of the game if it continues...

Oh, I agree. All things considered, it went well. Lots of quick feedback between John and us.

After banging my head against the wall on Hatshoe for an eternity, its good to play something w/ actual resolution!

Although, I did resist the urge to ask John things like... what's your laptop's IP address/gateway/ISP? Make/model/serial number? Smile

That's a good point.

I will say, however, that the typos could still be significant, just not to this puzzle.

The O'Brien bit was weird...

So there just happened to be typos who spell O'Brien exactly (not O'Brian)...

The comma-space error is even there for the apostrophe...

O'Brien just happens to be the protagonist form a classic novel of paranoia and distrust...

From a novel whose title is 4 digits just like the passcode he needed...

The clues hinged on weird 3-word phrases in the letter which are phrased like 1984's iconic slogans: War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength...

If it wasn't intentional, that's one hell of a coincidence!

Another new blog post with this inscription found above and below the HP symbol on his laptop:

Quote:
RJ LABS 09

A number of typos in this post too, and he mentioned that he feels something in the incision on the back of his neck (which has apparently fully healed already). He's also figured out that he's on the East Coast and that it's cold where he is.

The last post mentioned that the poster outside the door when he escaped said:

Quote:
All Eyes Are On You, Johnathan! with a big ass eye on it as well.

Not sure what we can make of all this but I figured I'd put it here

some aesthetic stuff about where he is, how tired he is, raining, sleepy, etc. then an IMPORTANT EDIT:

Quote:
I just found something interesting!!! This should help, I hope... There was RJ Labs 09 inscribed on the back, small down in the left hand corner, with part of something else missing...I can tell how many letters long it was but can't make out most of the letter....Here: __________84.net A few of the letters missing look like an N, an e, and maybe an A towards the begining, but I'm not totally sure. I'm young, what can I say? Trying to think postive guys : ) peace

so. A, N, E, and 84.net gonna start looking around google.

EDIT: sorry, meant to say. TEN LETTERS. and google is turning up a lot of spam sites for [inurl:84.net]. kind of frustrating.

EDIT2: emailed him, got the letter order. ___A___NE_84.net. gonna try again.

okay, so i think the url is name-based. RJ Labs must have something to do with initials, and joNEs fits in the url.

still working.

EDIT: well i feel like a tool right now. just realized that, in the long years since my last readthrough of 1984, i have switched the character's names. Embarassed not really an important update, but i feel it's necessary to be publicly embarassed.

EDIT2: after a couple hours of searching, i conclude that the url is private, and therefore impossible to find on google. we have to get it right to find it. IDEAS: 84? sounds like the whole 1984 idea wasn't that far off. start there. probably two names, first starts with R second with J, what with RJ LABS. aside from those ideas, no fucking ideas.

I guess this strange email I got is related, since the the people that recieved it are also on the mailing list from John.

[META] For our probably newby PM, if you read. Some people might not like that their email address is send to all other players so it is more typical to send the emails via BCC to the players [/META]

Now the email from "Just Another Non-Existing G-mail Account <janega.janega@gmail.com" janega.janegaSPLATgmail.com
Subject: To those it may concern

EDIT:
meaning of the last number:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

01 04 01 13 with simple substitution (A=1, B=2...) reveals
ADAM

EDIT2:

the page we are searching is pretty sure on http://net84.net - but no idea about the username, yet.

EDIT3: Got it Smile

Website still under review?

META: here's a lesson: always let your websites cook for a little while before dropping the trailhead.

Anyway, waiting.

EDIT: site's back up. Looks like RJ labs is some tech guy who was contracted out to do some tech work (check the news page).

gonna contact.

shit, forgot to copy my message... oh well. just the usual stuff, what has happened so far, why does John have one of his laptops, what's going on, etc.

I just wonder from where the name "Jones" come before. It was posted before the discovery of the RJLabs site. Was it just coincidence that this guy really is named Jones or did we get this name somewhere else?

Regarding that strange riddle I got via email here a few thoughts (not spoilered since just some guesses):

"Two times you, times all ye again, forms the letter that comes before 10":
Not sure what to do: Two times "you" could be two times "u" ="w". Letter before 10 could also be 9 = I ???

"Mirror a 10 and take out nothing": Mirror 10 --> 01. Take out nothing (0) --> 1 --> A

"Twice as many dwarves coulda saved humpty dumpty, while one more woulda been far two many, and before many plus you is the next thing you needs"
No idea how many dwarves coulda saved humpty dumpty. Maybe 7?
One more = 8
Two far than many --> many = 6
before many --> 5
plus you --> still do not understand the "you" part

"and the last is simple, it's only 19" --> 19 --> S

OK, here's one possible solution that makes sense in the context of this game.

Quote:
Two times you, times all ye again, forms the letter that comes before 10.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The letter before 10 is I, since 10 = J. I = 9, so we need to arrive at that amount. 9 happens to be a perfect square (i.e., 3*3 or 3^2 or 3+3+3), so "you" = 3. We will need the value of "you" later, but the answer to this portion is 9 = I.

Quote:
Mirror a 10 and take out nothing,

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The mirror of 10 is 01 and nothing = 0. So 1-0=1 and 1 = A.

Quote:
Twice as many dwarves coulda saved humpty dumpty, while one more woulda been far two many,

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
There are 7 dwarves in Snow White, so twice as many dwarves = 14. One more dwarf = 15 which is two many, so 15-2=13 and 13 = M.

Quote:
and before many plus you is the next thing you needs,

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
This line caused me problems. This solution may be completely wrong, as there's lots of ways to interpret "before", "many," and "next".

"Two" comes before "many" in the last part, and "you" = 3, so 2+3=5. The "next thing" after 5 is 6 and 6 = F.

Quote:
and the last is simple, it's only 19.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
19 = S.

Quote:
-01040113

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
01 = A and 4 = D and 13 = M, so it signed by ADAM.

So the overall this solution comes to:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I AM FS but "FS" doesn't mean anything to us; however, and I stress this is me forcing the answer fit, if you ROT-4 "FS", you get "JW" which is Johnathan Warnor's initials.

Why ROT-4? Because any other amount didn't make any sense. Maybe the 4-letters of ADAM is supposed to be a clue? .shrug.

The 4th letter is a best guess, as any other letter I came up with for the 4th spot would not not have meant anything meaningful in the current context of this game.

I tried to see if a ROT combo would give us RJ, as in RJ Labs, but to ROT the S to J is a -9 displacement. So we'd have to ROT Z -9 to get to R, and no combo of the 4th letter clues came numerically anywhere near Z (26).

There's always the possibility FS or QS or PS or whatever are initials of a character not yet introduced. Or there's the possibility I have the entire thing wrong and it's not in the form of "I AM __".
