[META] A thread for the meta-minded
post meta related material here. this is /not/ ARG cannon material.

Just thought i'd make a thread where we can discuss the meta details about this ARG. i'll go first:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Eva has undergone chrono-retro transmogrification!:

photos of Eva as she appeared at the beginning:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/everfalling/3803142129/

photos of Eva as they appear right now in the ARG according to Kevin's blog:

http://rememberingeva.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/shrine1.jpg?w=400&h=274
http://rememberingeva.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/bethandeva.jpg?w=432&h=514

i'm guessing the nonchalance.com revamp might have to do with, at the very least, altering the new image in the profiles.

strange. i wonder what happened to the original Eva? i don't like the new one as much. :/

Let's not forget:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The drawing of Eva in the "transcript" map doesn't match either photo of Eva.

well to be fair that's an artists rendition. Trey and Cornelius don't really look like their cartoon poster counterparts.

here's some META concerning Eva's Journal:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The weird writing at the end of the journal is most likely a dead end. Comparing the writings between the journal and the Codex reveal the writing in the journal is merely snippet segments stole from the codex, changed slightly, and then flipped upside down. it's not supposed to make sense at all.

also remember we noticed some backwards writing on the backside of two pages? well as i was transcribing them it hit me that i had read the words before. They're pre-written transcripts. scripts for the journal written by the PM's in advance. i guess they needed paper to separate one page from another so that it wouldn't bleed through and warp multiple pages and by using the script it rubbed off onto the back of the images. the text itself is merely what was written only a few pages previous.

stuff

I remember when Tungsten and I first came across the radio show: we were stuck on every little possible line: "Arctic", "cemetery", etc....we waaay overthought it. We made a quick trip to the Columbarium in the Sunset and of course nada. Also, we were intrigued with how to get to the 22nd floor on California Street.
The game master like to add lots of descriptive/atmospheric details, which are just that....details. I'm pretty sure that when a clue is a real clue...it will scream. But the fun is trying to find that one clue.

Of course.

The unusual term "aerosol heritage" is used in the Radio Nonchalance recording.

A Google search turns up links relating to Nonchalance and Oaklandish. The following seemed relevant:

indeed nonchalance used to be an art collaborative that worked with oaklandish. you can see their original site if you use the way back machine at archive.org this was one of the first things i did when i learned about this being an ARG.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
i found a youtube channel after watching the latest EPWA video. it seems to be a promotional channel about nonchalance. here's their 'ad' video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fyyH5tvkfes

as well as a sort of music video dedicated to Eva and the videos they shot of her (one of which, where they're pointing out the glyphs over by the Neil estate, isn't something i've seen before. maybe i missed it on the act 3 map?)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5deA9GqYJ0s

their professional site seems to have been hidden under our noses:

I'm not sure if this has been discussed before, but here are a few more things related to Act II:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

When I went to the Curiosity Shop to acquire the WSPS letter, the girl working there took notice of the Radio Nonchalance map in my hand and said, "one of my good friends drew that." After I informed her that the map is a truly killer piece of artwork (especially considering that I thought the "transcripts" would be just that: textual transcripts, and not a fully realized, frame-able map of awesomeness), she said "it took him over a month to draw that!" I asked for his name so I could look online to see his other work, and she told me that his name was Loren Purcell. A quick Google led me to his site where you can see some of his other works. I'd love to buy some of his prints when his new site goes up. If you desire, you can check out his stuff here:

http://www.lorenpurcell.com/portfoliopage.htm

Also, when I asked about the WSPS letters, she said that there is a girl that is contracted by the Nonchalants to create the letters for them. As you can imagine, she has a site where you can order your own super-small letters to send to whomever you like. I'm thinking about buying a few to send as Christmas Cards with the return address as being from The Grinch, and when you open the letter, it will only say, "Bah Humbug." Cheesy? Of course. Best card ever? Absolutely. You can check out the World's Smallest Postal Service by going here:

http://www.worldssmallestpostalservice.com

At the end of the day, this "game" is insanely satisfying in a variety of ways. If the producers intended the game to be a fun, exciting way to provoke deep thought, open your mind to different ideologies and mythologies, and stimulate real conversation about the local art scene and expose people to the wealth of talent in San Francisco that you wouldn't necessarily be exposed to, then hey, they're doing their job in spades.

On the off-chance that anyone involved in this experience reads these messages: where can I send a thank you card? I just happen to know a girl that makes the most adorable cards in town. Wink

very nice finds. i always kinda thought the WSPS was someone just using a very small font to make the letters. the calligraphy just seemed too consistent. neat to know they're actually hand-written.

Actually, I believe that the letters we have aren't actually hand-written. I'm copying and pasting this from the FAQ section of her site:

Quote:
Is there a difference between the letters purchased in person and the letters ordered online?

The only difference is that while in-person letters are transcribed by hand, letters ordered online are typed and printed in a "handwriting" font that is twice as tiny as the hand-written letters! This makes the magnifying glass all the more necessary and lets you write up to 12 sentences instead of 6. If you have your heart set on a handwritten letter, please email me and we can work something out.

How on earth can you write so tiny?

I guess it's just a natural born talent. I only recently discovered it and didn't realize that everyone couldn't write so tiny if given a fine-tipped pen.

Either way, they're pretty amazing. If you check her calendar page, she sets up shop in different places around the Bay once a month to do in-person hand written letters. And, of course, it looks like I just missed her in Golden Gate park this past Saturday and Sunday. On her next scheduled date, I'm going to have her write a letter from myself to Octavio Coleman, demanding details of The Algorithm. Cool

Just a tidbit that I found interesting:

Today I ordered the Socio-Reengineering '79 T-Shirt, since I think they look awesome and I love supporting art that I enjoy.

However, when I got my PayPal receipt, the subject line read "Your payment to Sara Thacher."

Interested if the name would lead anywhere, I Googled her and found what I believe to be her website and blog. There doesn't seem to be anything directly related to Jejune or Nonchalance, but she's an artist from the Bay Area that is involved in some interesting projects:

Her site: http://borro.ws/

There are some cool, out-of-the-box ideas in her projects section, such as a "Freckle Exchange," where her and a friend found a freckle they liked on each other, then had it tattooed in the exact location on their own body.

And her blog: http://socialpractice.org/weblog/

The site is described as "urban interventions, utopian proposals, guerrilla architecture, "new genre" public art, social sculpture, project-based community practice, web-based interactivity, service dispersals, street performance, and more." Sounds familiar, no?

Again, I don't even know if this is the same person that's handling the Jejune T-shirt money, but the evidence seems to add up.

Also, I just realized that I donated $25 to Octavio Coleman's evil foundation. Now I need to buy a LBBoN to even things out. Cool
